    The Stockholm Metro is similarly designed.
    There are 3 "main" lines: Green, Red and Blue with 7 "branch" lines in total: 10, 11, 13, 14, 17, 18 and 19. Lines 13-19 are from older tram lines and are on the older Red and Green "main" lines.
    In 1975, when the Blue Line (the only line that wasn't based off of older tram lines) opened, the Red and Green Lines had the numbers 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 24, 27, 28 and 29 (Lines 15, 24, 27, 28 and 29 were for fill-in lines), much more than today's 13, 14, 17, 18 and 19, so they wondered what the Blue Line should be called. At the time, it only had one branch, so it would then be logical to name it 16 and 26 (the latter one for the fill-in line), but they instead named it 10 and 20. It changed again when another branch if the Blue Line opened and the numbers were changed to 10 and 11.
    Also, now we have the problem with the currently under construction Yellow Line. What's it gonna be called? I suggest 15 and 16, but that's just me...

  • @OnkelJajusBahn
    @OnkelJajusBahn Před 4 lety +4

    Some additional interresting facts: The lines 1 and 2 used to be ringlines clockwise and counterclockwise around the Ring. Only in 2008 they became through-lines.
    With the radial lines: The 20ies lines both run solely on the north side of the river danube. The line 30 does as well but it is just a shortened line 31.
    There is a local train, which runs from Vienna to Baden. Within those two cities the trains run on tramway tracks, outside of the towns the line runs like a train, with no stopping at trafic lights and even freight traffic. There is a small part, Feldgasse in Guntramsdorf, that is oficially a railway and not a tramway track but runs on the street. In this road even freight trains pass through.They use regular tramway vehicles but with less doors, more comfortable seats. Interrestingly the line uses three different voltages on the journey. Even though in Vienna, that line shares the same tracks with regular tram lines, the line is operated by a different company. In the abbreviation for the line, that is also shown on signs or train direction indicators is WLB, meaning Wiener Lokalbahn (Vienna Local Train).

Ow and the metro is Line 50 till 55 (because why not??). Renumbering also get the same 'butbutbut my line number!!!' nostaligia suckers (they tried to do it when the new metro line opened in 2018, but didn't go through sadly).

    Now we have letter plus numbers, number plus description, letter plus numbers plus description, and some buses straight up don't have a code anymore.

    I live in Tokyo, and I'm confused af by all of this, just number the lines from 1 starting in the center and move out from there, done. And if you want to make it even easier for tourist, just add colors.

    • @DieAlteistwiederda
      @DieAlteistwiederda Před 2 lety

      My city has numbers and colors and the colors basically tell you what part do the city they take you to. Green is for roughly the west and a bit of south-west for example so all lines that go through my part of the city are green. Pretty easy system I can tell that one of my lines arrives at our huge main station even without my glasses because I can see the green.
      Our numbers are 1 to 16 but over the years somewhere we lost the lines 5 and 6 and kind of also the 13 so we now only have the others left and a whole bunch of busses. Still not that bad or confusing.
      Busses are numbered 60 and up though which is a bit weird and all the full numbers like 60, 70 etc. are main lines of special importance. Everything above 100 is for busses that go out of the city too.

    I live in Singapore. We don't have as many lines as Vienna but their namings are misleading as hell. We have the East-West line that goes from the east to the west which is fine, then we we have the North-South line that goes to the west, North-East line that goes to the south, Circle line which does not go in a circle and Downtown line whoever know what Downtown means...

    Problem happens when you need to divert, change, deactivate or start new lines. If you had 30 tram lines and then 25, you can't change the numbers really because people get used to the idea of "I can take that 17 to get to the botanical gardens" and it takes time. In my city, we have like 10 empty spots in tram numbers for trams that last existed some 20 years ago and they prefer to add new numbers as to not confuse people (but some lines got reactivated after 18 years with small route change and apparently that's for the best)...

  • @error-42
    @error-42 Před 4 lety +1

    In my city to make bus numbers they do it in a way that shows which interchange does that line go to (mosly, you cna't make it perfect).
    For example (I might miss a few lines.) (Lines that terminate are written):
    Interchange 1: 6, 9, 16, 19, 29, 290, 53, 67, 68, 90.
    Interchange 2: 2, 3, 3A, 4, 7, 11, 28, 280, 43
    Interchange 3: 29, 290, 30, 31, 32, 34, 35, 35R, 38, AU2
    Interchange 4: 1, 21, 30, 31, ME, 1V, 2V (V: Tram)
    End stop 1: 12, 22, ME
    End stop 2: 2, 20
    Lines 5, 15 and 6, 16 go on similar paths.

    In Jakarta, new bus routes would be numbered according to the parent "corridor" it intersects/go through ex: Line 6C and 6E go to Corridor 6 so technically it's part of Corridor 6, that also apply to routes that didn't use the BRT lanes like 5F that goes to Tanah Abang since it ends in Kampung Melayu, Terminus for Corridors 5,7,11
    For suburban routes they use the initial letter of the Town they go to while numbering is pretty random

    I am from Vienna and I have found a detailed explanation of the numbering system with all the old lines that are nonexistent anymore (we had many more) as a PDF and in German. I must say it was much more confusing still it has/had a system to it once you get it sorted out.

    Vienna is probably in the running for biggest network by total number of tram stops.
    Trust the Austrians to come up a system for everything even if one is theoretically not needed.
    3:56: I really hope when I come to Vienna I can still find the comically deep male tram voice.
    Wien ist wohl im Rennen fuer das groeszte Netzwerk um Gesamtzahl Straszenbahnhaltestellen.

    Also other transports depend on this system. Buses in Vienna are extended by "A" and "B", around Vienna they get a number in front of the line, as higher this number, as more far away from the city they go (for example 2xx, 3xx, ... (xx stands, in best case, for the tram line which the bus extends)). Suburban train lines are called S10, S20, S30, ..., if they cross the City (Station Wien Mitte), they are called S1, S2, S3, ....
