My dumbass read Venezia - City of Spices. Came in thinking i was gonna learn once again about how the serene republic had a monoply on Ottoman spices sent to the west. WAS PLEASANTLY surprised to learn about how Venice is riddled with international spies!!!

There's a joke in my family that my uncle is a spy, he has lived all over the world, speaks a dozen languages, insanely smart, very quiet and can blend into the background (basically the only time I ever get to talk to him is about maths), the job he stated doesn't seem probable, nobody knows exactly what he does, he always has a big office in his house which is always locked, and has a permanent residence in Austria, however he is wealthy which is the only thing which would discout him as a spy; he has never confirmed nor denied being a spy and just politely smiles when someone brings it up (he has never joked about anything - this could be his 1 joke in his whole life)

It's great to see a video on this subject. I lived in vienna for a couple of years some time ago as my mother worked there for the UN. There were lots of stories about spies, but the most interresting part is that it was basically really easy to spot spies in an embassy as they were the only ones without name tags.
I also knew a guy there from belarus and his driver was also an electrician and a translator and who was alo around at every important event so, there still is quite some stuff going on
as an Austrian... why is it the most Austrian thing ever that espionage is legal as long as it's not directed at our country....

I watched the austrian version and this, as a german, this was easier to understand but the austrian version was more enjoyable. Why am I like that?

That is a German sentence : "pie mal daumen" = "Pie times thumb" and describes a situation in which you estimate in such a quick time that it is probably wrong

@@NomenFugazi Well probably it depends on the people, the more nationalistic/old hungarians don't like the dualist days, old people usually do that because of history teaching in the soviet union was heavily bent to make monarchy seem as bad as possible, nationalist just simply cannot accept that Hungary was better off with Austria. But people who are not biased can clearly see how much hungary improved thanks to the collaboration.
I really wish WWI and nationalism never happened, the world would be better off without it... probably.

@@therealdave06 it's a German saying. "Pi mal Daumen" or "Pi times thumb" just refers to any approximation. So "Es gibt 8000 Spione in Wien, so Pi Mal Daumen" would mean "there are approximately 8000 spies in Vienna", but keep in mind it's an informal saying.

I work in the bundeswehr MI, and went to Vienna for holiday. I was there with a friend. We were tailed by a white sedan the moment we entered the city. I only realized this after we went into a prebooked parking garage, and the car hurriedly parked in a small alleyway and 2 men stepped out
