✅▶ Are you considering picking up some business skills? Let me know in the comments!
    FYI: SME means 'Small-Medium Enterprise'!

Sounds like a very valuable program! In the past I often labelled myself as a "science" person, not a "business" person. But, this video has inspired me to see what business skills training my company has to offer, thanks!

Hi Karina! Wow, such great feedback...I did not expect this so soon! What triggered me immediately when I started working in biotech, in a specific department, was to get to see 'the full picture', understand the process from A to Z. If you have this mindset, you can place your own job in a better perspective, while also identifying potential step-ups or side-steps. Always balance the holistic view with the details. I also try to stay a 'specialized generalist' :) Hope your company has a good program. If not, there's options on the net ;)

This was perfect, Kevin! As a fellow business major what you said was on point and the program really aligns with the essentials of business strategies!

Thanks a lot, Adrian! Did NOT know your major was business, I thought media and communications was (given your great video skills etc.)! Subbed in the meanwhile by the way :D
PS: will forward my latest video to Meri now via messenger ;) enjoy it, both of you!

Hey! I recently came across your channel and love how relatable it is. I'm about to move into my final year of biomed undergrad, and there's a lot of career planning/questions going on in my mind right now. So I'm just going to pitch in some here. I personally don't enjoy a lot of bench work, and would prefer to do something related to communication, management or education, etc. based outside the laboratory. However, I definitely would want it to be related to my degree and what I have studied so far because I do enjoy it. What sort of jobs do you think would be suitable in such a case? And is it better to go for masters directly, or try out some jobs in the industry before to figure out where my interests really lie? Thanks! Really appreciate your nhelp and effort here.

Hi there! And welcome! ;) That is indeed a good question! I hope you've checked out my Biomedical Science Jobs playlist, maybe there's already some answers over there! Just in case: education: yes you can become a high school teacher (or even teach nurses or la techs in college, at least in Belgium), but mostly your options will be limited to STEM (of course), and in specific cases maybe only chemistry and biology, but this can depend a lot on the school/college/uni/country/region. Science writing perhaps as communication, but you will need evidence of good writing for this. Perhaps check out some life science blogs and try to post writing on there to create a portfolio. You also need communication if you are going into sales for instance. Management can be anywhere, perhaps a lab manager who isn't actually at the bench but arranges all the supplies and organization and stuff... Project manager is another one you could do in a life science company. For some management positions as Master's will suffice, but this can depend. Perhaps choose some business focused courses in your electives in the masters... plenty of options.
The 2nd part is interesting: I did 3 year BA and 2 year MA directly back-to-back, then 5 year biotech, and now PhD. I take a lot of experience with me from my industry years, but perhaps I should have tried a PhD again after 2 years already (I did it anyway! ;)). Indeed it doesn't sound too bad to perhaps first get experience, BUT perhaps the money making will prevent your from stepping back into studies? Remember that each degree not only provides added skills, but perhaps added salary. It could be that you get into one company where they pay you well as a BA, then you go back to school, come out as an MA, and start somewhere else where perhaps you will start at MA starting level, while you could have perhaps came close to that level already if you stayed at your initial job (note that this can vary a LOT according to company)!

@@Biomeducated thanks a ton for the insight! I'm trying to organise a list of my skill set at the moment and hopefully that'll help in making a decision. Your suggestions are very helpful, will keep them in mind surely! Hoping to see more biomed content on your channel, it's really a motivational boost :')

Maybe try looking into Clinical Research? I also studied Biomed and I now work as a Clinical Trial Associate. You learn a lot about how clinical trials are conducted and you would definitely improve your communication and management skills! There's not a lot of science in the role, but it's been a great way for me to get my foot in the door of the pharma industry. I studied a Masters, but I don't think I needed it to get this role :)

    • @Biomeducated

You're probably right Karina, you could get in with just an undergrad, but I think your salary is higher because you have a master's. here a great channel you might like: czcams.com/users/dansfera

Awesome! I did not know this! I am actually planning on pursuing an Engineering Managements masters in the future for the same reasons!! (it requires 18 months of professional experience, so this is why I am going into industry now). What does SME stand for? :o
I wonder if there is a PhD I could pursue instead of a masters in a similar field. This video definitely helped, as always ;) Thank you!!

I think you're making a good decision with that! SME: small-medium enterprise ;)
And perhaps you would suit a PhD program, given I know you are driven! (that rhymes! :D)
