    *!!!!!!!!!!* For my UK people only (other countries: ignore this message!): ghoopi.com/5-of-the-top-universities-to-study-biomedical-science-in-2020/
    "Choosing a university-based solely on the fact that they have IBMS accreditation isn’t very wise as the majority of Biomed graduates never end up using this accreditation to become biomedical scientists, as this is its main purpose. Even if you did, the inhospitable job market for biomedical scientists right now will prove it was a poor decision to study at a university purely for IBMS certification."
    I have indeed picked up rumours that the medical lab functions are getting over-saturated in the UK... Hence the importance to know your other career/job options with a biomed degree: check my biomedical science playlist: czcams.com/play/PLVkbUwfR9zbmSsF_cQl_hZPLtWko8_vA3.html

Im glad that I found your video of you explaining the majority of things that we need to acknowledge when pursuing Biomedical Science. I was scared when I first heard this degree but thanks to you, I'm more prepared to face the challenges. Thank you so much

      Hi there! I think dependent on your specific biomed course you could have slight nuances in terms of focus in year 1. (Note that I'm not from the UK, but from Belgium, and so far I have learned that biomed curses differ around the world! However, mostly in year 1 you will have basic chemistry, basic biochemistry, some maths, maybe some physics, and some cell biology and genetics. If there is chemistry/physics/maths, usually these are applied to biological problems, hence it's in specific relevant context. If you snoop around a bit on the following channels you will get an idea of what you might expect throughout biomedical sciences: czcams.com/video/n-gdNQn7pvg/video.html

    Hi . Could you explain to me whats the difference between medical laboratory scientist vs boomedical scientist? Also who is more expert at finding new therapies for dieseases?

    • @Biomeducated
      @Biomeducated  Před 4 lety

      Hi there! Please read the following: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_laboratory
      In essence, MLS: medical lab, applied science, accreditation needed ; biomedical scientist (researcher): trained for research labs, basic and translational science, no accreditation needed per se. Here's where it becomes complicated: the UK also calls MLS/MLT 'biomedical scientist'. To get more complicated: With some extra training a biomedical scientist trained for research could adapt to work in a medical lab. MLT/MLS could probably also end up in industry or research perhaps linked with some extra training. The main thing is: when dealing with lab samples from patients in order to diagnose, you are required by law to have evidence of your skills.

      @@Biomeducated thank you very much. So i believe that being biomedical science is better for research for new therapies for dieseases . Furthermore, does biomedical science associate with creating new drugs and vaccines?

    • @Biomeducated
      @Biomeducated  Před 4 lety +1

      @@whoisnext9837 Yes, basically biomeds are trained to be at the forefront of new drug target discovery. But this doesn't mean they can't be used in drug development as well, amongst others maybe vaccines. You can get into this with a pharma or biotech degree as well. There's many overlapping options within life sciences!

      @@lucabonaccio Well, I see some interesting research areas, for sure! If you're deciding for a PhD, MAKE SURE the topic interests you. This is crucial. If you for instance really want to help discover insights on the mechanisms of Ulcerative colitis or Crohns disease, and you can't find a group in those research areas that are working on this, then I suggest looking somewhere else. 2nd, really question yourself as to why you would do a PhD, what's your motivation. If it's ONLY to get an extra diploma, then you might hit a wall. 3rd, if you found a lab you're interested in: try to contact PhD students or other epmloyees that are there and ask about the atmosphere, how the PI is like, etc. (and ask multiple sources!). Hope this helps!

    Hi there! I actually had a question that after doing a sandwich year, could u like go directly in a research field or do u have to have more qualifications for that?

    • @Biomeducated
      @Biomeducated  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi! Well, I never did a placement year because in Belgium my education was a 3 year B.Sc + 2 year M.Sc. From what I've understood, the sandwich year is a 'year in between year 2 and 3 of a B.Sc' to gain relevant industry experience. In my opinion, this could indeed be an extra year to increase your chances of landing a job afterwards, so I recommend taking it if it's there. However, you could still proceed to a M.Sc too. The thing is, if you go for an M.Sc, perhaps the sandwich year seems less relevant as you will gain research experience during your thesis project. HOWEVER, the latter is usually in university research labs, so the sandwich year in INDUSTRY could still give you an edge...

    Hey, why did you get your bachelor in biomedical sciences from the university of Ghent (belgium)? (As you mentioned this in a couple of videos.)
    Do they rank good in the list of other universities in Belgium such as Leuven / Antwerpen, ..?

    • @Biomeducated
      @Biomeducated  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi there! Indeed, Ghent it was (and still is ;)). First off: Belgium is small, so there aren't that many Uni's (11 or 12). Second, there's only 5 in the northern part (Flanders), thus speaking Dutch as 1st language. Third, I live closest to Ghent. The fact that Ghent is usually 2nd in ranking is a bonus :D
      Here's some numbers:
      www.mastersportal.com/ranking-country/4/belgium.html
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_universities_in_Belgium
      In general, in most rankings KUL (Leuven) and RUG (Ghent) are in the top 100. Across Flanders there's also the VIB (Flemisch Institute for Biotechnology), which is a major player globally, and many RUG and KUL labs are associated with it. Check this list by top science magazine Nature also: www.natureindex.com/supplements/nature-index-2019-biomedical-sciences/tables/overall

    Is it possible to go on to study a masters degree in neuroscience, microbiology, Pharmacology or biomedical engineering after doing a BSc in biomedical sciences?

    • @Biomeducated
      @Biomeducated  Před 4 lety

      Good question! The answer is yes to all, but how exactly you will get there (direct or indirect) can be 1. specific to the university, and 2. specific for the ones you have listed. Biomed engineering, most definitely you will have to catch up on extra (applied) maths and some other courses. The other 2 most likely directly, though I'm doubting a bit on pharmacology. My best advice: go the websites of the particular Master programs and check the 'prerequisites or entry qualifications', there they will state if you can go directly into a program coming from another undergrad (bachelor) or if you will need additional education in a gap year.

    Hello, is it possible to change Universities for example: I want to do my bachelor in biomedical science at Leuven university and my master in biomedical science from Ghent university as it offers more majors than the university of Leuven does. • @Biomeducated
      @Biomeducated  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Lal Looo! No there isn't. For that usually there isn't and this can go directly because 1. the same studies (biomed) and 2. the same level: both University.
      It may appear as such that UGhent has more than KULeuven, but many of the biological subfields listed at UGhent you can simply find within everything Leuven calls the major 'Biomedisch basis- en translationeel onderzoek'.
