  • @Beevreeter
    @Beevreeter Před 5 lety +1

    Very nice use of plywood and a neat design but I suspect these chairs will fail at the point where the seat meets the back legs - four screws just do not have the shear strength to support what might be a 200Lb man. I would have used two vertically cut dominoes on each leg at that point, or even better dado the seat slightly into the back legs - then the screws would work because they would not be load-bearing.

  • @StevenJamesPorter
    @StevenJamesPorter Před 6 lety +1

    Super cool design. Another way for the front and back stretchers would possibly be to do the same method that you did for the seat and then cut them to length. This way all the lines run the same way from the different layers. More work but potentially worth it?

    The lamination effect looks beautiful, glad you showed it off at the end. It looked like the full sheet might have had some bow in it. Does the glueing take care of that or is it not really worth worrying t?

    • @JonnyBuilds
      @JonnyBuilds  Před 6 lety

      Thanks, Brian! Yeah, the sheet had a bow in it. Probably from sitting in my shop on its side for two months. Ripping the sheet down into small strips like I did makes this a non-issue for this build, though. Thanks for watching as always!

    Nice build Jonny, what the thickness size of your blade is on your bandsaw? And personally I would of used dowels and or loose tennons to do all of the joinery

    • @JonnyBuilds
      @JonnyBuilds  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks! The bandsaw blade is 3/16ths. Also I only used screws where the flat section of the back legs mate up to the 6 degree seat back and lower stretcher. Those get plugged with dowels and everything else is loose tenons aka dominos.

    • @daphlavor
      @daphlavor Před 6 lety

      Thanks for the quick response, I have some experience repairing cheap foreign made chairs, that are thrown together with sketchy hardware, I disabled them and add glue and dowels everywhere I could, no more squeaky chairs and no screws either! Thanks

    • @tomruth9487
      @tomruth9487 Před 6 lety +1

      daphlavor, I'm with you on the joinery. Not sure just how strong screws are in end grain plywood, especially over time and hard use. This is another reason chairs are not easy.
