- NARROW ESCAPE - our narrowboat life adventure. Many of you will know that we have been following the MASSIVE Brinklow Landslip on the Oxford Canal since it happened. Well, we have an update for you, or updated footage more to the point. We know many of you are waiting with baited breath for the canal to re-open and you can get where you want to be. The latest CRT notice suggests the canal will open in 8 days' time. Here's the footage, make your own mind up.

I done a belter of a paddling video to Hawkesbury junction i think 🤔 my heads getting bigger now lol.
But i am sure youll get thousands more views than me but we all start somewhere eh.
I added a picture from few weeks ago showing the height of the bank theyve now dug out it really does show how much spoil theyve had to move.
Well time is counting down, i cant wait to kayak past where that hump was lol gotta get over that hump.....😊😊😊😊😊

Can't see it myself but you never know. We picked our boat up last Saturday from Clifton Cruisers (We always use them, spot on) We were planning to go up the Ashby and back before the landslip, so instead we went to Stoke Bruerne and back and have to give a shout out to Spice of Bruerne, excellent Indian restaurant. Anyway such is life, we had a great week anyway and had the weather which is always a bonus. The Ashby will be there for next years adventure🤞Love the vlogs, keep up the good work and all our best wishes, the Hatts👍🍻

It will be interesting to see what happens Pam. The local hire companies will no doubt be exerting what pressure they can on the CRT crew! 👍

Hi - yes - we were looking to do a short video but the short story is navigation has reopened but only in very tight windows each weekday. Saturdays and Sundays the navigation is open and weekdays it’s open between 10am and 11 and 1 and 2pm, and after 4.30pm

Looks like the whole side needs extra support, otherwise the next heavy rain the rest will follow.
That has to be a serious concern for sure Karen.
NB Spudley also does regular vlogs on this and interviews CRT staff on site. I too have a worry about that whole area, not just where the landslide occurred…
Agreed on that - that whole stretch is a concern. Could be an absolute money pit!

I know…but if the whole lot collapses, there could be people and boats underneath next time 😢
It's been like this for years on and off small land slides it's only been closed for small tow path blockages in the past nothing too major, but this one really did move and filled the canal too.
Us locals walk and I paddle this a lot question is when and how long until the next slip?

They’ve done a few updates where they interview CRT staff. Last one was the other day and CRT reckon they are still on track to open the navigation on 18th May. We’ll see.
Hello from Kansas! I was thinking that with it caving in from both sides, could a sinkhole or subsidence be the cause? I'd lay money on it that it's not going to get done! It may even become a problem child for boaters and CRT. Thanks!
They seem pretty sure it’s due to the steep bank and the amount of rain just ahead of the slip occurring but who knows for sure? The issue they face is what to do with the rest of that stretch which is largely the same make up? Over the summer it shouldn’t be too much of an issue but come winter…?
Flogging a dead horse... The whole section is unstable, get some heavy rain & you'll get a slip somewhere along that cutting.
I agree - if I were the CRT I’d be VERY concerned about this whole stretch and WHEN not IF it goes again.
@@NarrowEscape1 CRT should look at reusing the orginal route,not sure how much is still there & reusable, there were a few preserved stretches some years ago,I wonder if they could still add in the missing sections to make whole length usuable again?
@@stuartandrews4344 We did look into this a year or so ago because we wanted to do a video on the old canal route. We didn't delve massively deep but it was obvious that it would be a problem due to being built over in many places, plus the cost of land acquisition would be huge in these days?
@@NarrowEscape1 A few ago I wanted to overlay 1st edition OS map showing canal route over various revisions & latest version OS maps & get my mate to fly his drone along the routes, there was quite a bit of route there in places, but have become filled in,but my unexpected health issues scuppered the plan.And I bet cost of land acquisition would work out cheaper than present & future land slips repair costs
Old route now has buildings built on it sadly its impossible to reinstate but how I wish the canal was left in the old route it would have put my village of Brinklow on the map.
Sadly no pictures of the canal back then routed through the village.
Wish they had put in a tunnel on the land slip section would have saved a lot of hard work now.
Gives us something to discuss though eh.
