      I tried everything but the crowbar and nothing has worked. Going to buy a crowbar tomorrow Thank God this happened at my house instead of the side of the road

    Thank you! The driving back and forth with loosened nuts trick worked for me. I live in a cool climate (salt on roads in winter) and right by the sea, so my wheels are always rusted on after a few months. This time it was particularly bad and hitting/kicking the wheel just wasn’t working.

    We had moved to a desert area with lots of blowing sand. Got a flat and couldn't remove the wheel to change it Goggled it and you came right up! we tried all of the above including driving back and forth a bit BUT one hit with a BIG hammer on a 2x4 knocked it right off. Sure enough little bits of sand stuck it tight! Thanks for the help!! As a widow you were a real blessing to me!!

    I don't remember this ever occurring in the old days when rims were generally made from steel rather than aluminium as they are today. I believe that it is more than just corrosion and that some sort of galvanic action is taking place between the dissimilar materials of the steel hub and the aluminium rim. I've run into this a few times now and some of these wheels were stuck so badly that I had to spray them repeatedly with WD-40 and after waiting a couple hours, lie on my back under the car and kick the tire off with both feet. Imagine getting a flat on the highway and having this happen. No way I'm crawling under a car on a scissor jack and doing this. Recommend you take your tires off and apply grease on the surfaces that contact each other as noted in the video.

      Yes, older cars are lug centric, meaning the lug nuts centered the wheel on the axle. Modern cars are hub centric, and the close tolerances between the hub and wheel center hole are very susceptible to corrosion and/or rust. That’s my problem, a rusted hub and a steel wheel.

      @richmac918 Před rokem

      @@edwardashley6688 That's a really good point that I hadn't even considered. You are absolutely right, the old style did rely on the lugs to center the wheel. Good thinking.

      No, I'm currently working on a car with hub-centric steelies and the last wheel is stuck

    You Sir are a legend! Worked with the prying method, the wheel was PROPERLY bound to the hub! I had already tried some of your methods with a rubber mallet and kicking and hitting. Finally the prying did the job!

    What kinds of grease are acceptable to use between wheel and hub to prevent this?

  • @cnimi
    @cnimi Před 2 měsíci

    It didn't take 15 minutes but 15 hours (I didn't have any serious pry bar or 8-lb hammer). The nuts have been torqued in a shop to something around 120 ft-lb, I figure. And yes, there's lots of salt on the road in the winter. I sprayed some KB 88 on the joint between the rim and the hub, let it seep in -nothing. Drove around a few hundred yards with the nuts 2 threads off, climbed some curbs -nothing. Sprayed some Knock'Er Loose and let it sit overnight with the nuts loose. Tightened the nuts and drove a couple miles to the store to get a 24" and a 36" pry bar. Took the nuts off, gave it a mild kick and the wheel came off. After 15h the KB 88 and Knock'Er Loose did their job and the wheel came off with a foot kick. My favorite is Aero Kroil but I don't have it at home and you cannot buy it in store in Canada.
    I cleaned a little the hub with a wire brush and I cleaned all the rust off the edge of the rim. I put some JetLube NIKAL antiseize on the hub and on the rim so this doesn't happen again. Will do it every time I put the rims on.
    Excellent video! I felt more important than the methods is you showing the viewers how you think about the problem, that's what helped me. Good teaching. Thank you !! 🙂

    My tire won’t come off. I’m currently on the side of the road after driving like 40km/h and swerving side the side. This is hilarious. Must go faster.

    One thing you didn't mention is getting the lug nuts off. I no you mentioned covering it in another video but I mention it because it's critical in that you're not going to get to the place of even taking the tire off until you get past the lug nuts. Picture a woman by the side of the road who decides to try to change her flat Tire. She makes it to the point where she's able to take the lug nut wrench they gave her with the car but she doesn't have enough strength and there are five lug nuts. A good Patron pulls up behind her and he has another lug nut wrench but he also can't remove a single lug nut. Those lug nuts are on so tight it's unbelievable. Taking one lug nut off requires Herculean strength with the tools you're given. I come along with a hollow metal tube that's about 5 ft long and I place it around the little one foot lug nut wrench that came with the car thus giving myself a very long lever arm. Even with this it takes a little bit of effort but it worked. Then after this you run into the problem that you describe in this video. I would call the way most people's vehicles are equipped to handle emergencies a false sense of security. Why won't car manufacturers put on anti-seize Grease or a lubricant oil to prevent the tire from sticking after the lug nuts are off? If I were at a dealership and I asked about how to access the Jack and other tools needed for a flat tire and the sales rep gave me the comfort and security of here's how you access it and there it is. I would ask him to go ahead and take one of the tires off using that equipment. The average person on the side of a road who gets a flat tire and manages to take the lug nuts off is going to end up kicking the tire on each side until it unseizes and you can take it off. That's probably the first and simplest thing to try.
