G80 M3 xDrive Review from a RWD owner - Has 4WD ruined the M3? + 0-60 and 1/4 mile Tests

  • The xDrive G80 M3 and G82 M4 are finally starting to be delivered, and this is a momentous occasion for BMW as it is the first time they have offered an M3/4 in 4WD. But has this ruined the driving dynamics of the car?
Having owned our RWD G80 M3 Competition from launch we have a fair amount of experience to see just how different this car is.

I can tell you as a former f80 m3 CS owner and current g80 m3 xdrive owner, I can take corners faster and get on the gas sooner than I would ever dream about in my f80. the g80 xdrive is night and day better in every single way than the f80, possibly except for the gearbox... Ive heard the g80 rwd is better at putting the power down than the f80 buts that's not saying much and heard it still runs into some sideways inefficiency... either way, with the g80 xdrive you can turn off the awd for some rwd sideways fun and then run 0-60 in 3.2 seconds and 11 in 1/4 mile (or 2.9 0-60 and high and 10s in the 1/4 with a slight tune). best of both worlds.

This car weighs 4000 pounds and has over 500 HP. For most people an AWD, automatic version makes sense. If you are someone who loves kicking out the tail end and punching through gears this might not be the one. You might want to go for a manual gear box with RWD. I think having options is a good thing. The G80 M series has a car for everyone.

Just to play devil's advocate: I realise adding the xdrive is only a few grand more, but for those of us who are trying to keep an eye on how this additional expense all stacks up over the base price, can I can ask whether it really is worth it (given the reputed brilliance and competence of the RWD model's traction in everyday driving)? I ask this as a M340i owner who has really respected what the xdrive system does to handling when you want to be a bit cheeky with the throttle in winter conditions, but who also knows (as a former RWD owner) that in the vast majority of situations the limits of grip in a RWD 3er are often driver-provoked more than anything. In other words, if you're sensible in a RWD G80, is the xdrive really that essential, especially when so many reviewers have already attested to its outstanding grip and seemingly endless traction, even in challenging conditions. I'm asking out of genuine curiosity (and because I've not yet had the opportunity to test drive a G80 in either set-up), and not because I'm querying the findings of your very informative and balanced review. Thanks!

When turning right or left from a full stop in first gear, I get this feeling like some gearing is not catching. The car doesn't necessarily shake but the acceleration is not smooth. It feels like a 4x4 car making a u turn and getting that jerky acceleration. In a straight line, the gear shifts are perfectly smooth/normal. Is this something you are experiencing in your m3 as well or something I should look into? Any information would help!
