Dodge, an American automobile brand, produced three separate vehicles with the name Dodge Charger Daytona, all of which were modified Dodge Chargers. The name is taken from Daytona Beach, Florida, which was an early center for auto racing and still hosts the Daytona 500, one of NASCAR's premier events. The first use of the Daytona name on a car was on a version of the Studebaker Lark. The Daytona was the performance model of the compact Lark and it was produced from 1969-1970. The Dodge Charger was made to beat the competition in NASCAR, Americas Premier Racing Series.
With the racing failure of the previous limited edition 1968 Dodge Charger 500 in NASCAR and Plymouth's superstar Richard Petty leaving them for Ford, the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona was created. It was intended to be a high-performance, limited-edition version of the Dodge Charger produced in the summer of 1969 for the sole purpose of winning high-profile NASCAR races. It won its first race, the inaugural Talladega 500, in the fall, although the top names had left the track on Saturday in a boycott of the race. Buddy Baker, in the No. 88 Chrysler Engineering Dodge Charger Daytona, was the first driver in NASCAR history to break the 200 mph (322 km/h) mark, on March 24, 1970, at Talladega. The 1969 Dodge Daytona won two races in 1969 and another four in 1970 for a total of six. Its successor, the 1970 Plymouth Superbird, won eight races - all in 1970. Dodge Daytonas also won on the USAC and ARCA race circuits. They set numerous race and pole records.
One of the two famous aero-cars, the Dodge Daytona had featured special body modifications that included a 23-inch-tall (584 mm) stabilizer wing on the rear deck, a special sheet-metal "nose cone" that replaced the traditional upright front grille, a flush rear backlight (rear window area), a 'window cap' to cover the original Charger's recessed rear window, specific front fenders and hood that were modeled after the upcoming 1970 Charger, stainless steel A-pillar covers and fender mounted cooling scoops. The Daytona was built on the 1969 Charger's R/T trim specifications, meaning that it carried a heavy-duty suspension and brake setup and was equipped with a 440 cu in (7.2 L) Magnum engine as standard. Of special note to collectors is the optional 426 cu in (7.0 L) Hemi V8 engine, which only 70 of the 503 Daytonas carried. It had a corporate cousin in the "one year-only" 1970 Plymouth Superbird and with help of Chrysler's missile engineers, the Charger Daytona was born.
The "Winged Warriors", as they were affectionately known,[citation needed] did not compete for long in NASCAR's top Cup series. On the next season of NASCAR, the executives banned aero specs on cars with engines bigger than 305 cubic inches (ie the same five litre limit imposed by the SCCA for the Trans-Am and internationally by the FIA for Group 5 sports cars). Because of their exceptional speed and performance, NASCAR subsequently changed the rule book, effectively banning all four of the Aero Cars from Dodge, Ford, Mercury, and Plymouth from competition by the end of 1970. See also Plymouth Superbird, Ford Torino Talladega and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II for additional information about the aero cars. The 1970 Daytona 500 had only one winged car, the #71 called "mini motor." - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Man I was just thinking “I hope he makes a old ragged model soon” lol I love when they look beat up
Thank you!
Oh man!...I have an old AMTDaytona, ..bought it over 10 years ago, just to make a "Joe Dirt"...got the big beef and Cragars, cut out the headlight door...got the movie on dvd for reference pics...and then...it stalled....but now, thanks to you, I've got the bug again, and it's on!!
Sounds great!
How'd it turn out?
Looks great brother, Thank you for sharing and keep em coming we love them. Everyone keep yourself and love ones safe and REMEMBER TO SMILE IT'S A HOBBY AND IT'S SUPPOSE TO BE FUN.
Right on!
Amazing work! I love this rust, man! Wow!
Great build. Always loved joe's car.
Another great build Chris, really dig the way you do such effortless and effective weathering 👍😎
Thank you!
AWESOMENESS !!!
WOW 😯. That looks great 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Outstanding work sir!!!!
Thank you kindly!
Wow nice wheathing cool love the old beat models great job Chris keep them coming
Thank you!
Great build, and I love your use of grout for weathering powder! I used the Revell kit for my "Deer-tay" Daytona build, kudos to you for making that old reissued kit got together so well.
That's cool, I just saw a real one of these at a local car show last weekend! The model box and kit are cool as well. 👍
Thank you!
Dang what a coincidence, i was just thinking about building myself a Daytona!
Same
LOL
Great video. Love the detailing.
Glad you liked it!
That looks super. I think it turned out great
Thank you! Cheers!
Great build you did a nice job on this one always liked that car
Glad you like it!
life's a garden....Dig It! great build as always!!
Yes! Thank you!
Love that ragged looking Dodge! Excellent work Chris!
You and me both!
thanks for sharing your joe dirt car so cool the history of the holes on fenders was because the front tires on the nascars were rubbing the fenders the scoops were just to cover the holes thanks agian chris
Love the rake!! 🚗
Thank you!
Huge joe dirt fan so much respect on the build sir
Thanks!
looks Awesome
Thank you!
Awesome! Fave movie.
Thank you!
Another masterpiece! Looks the part, looks like a car from Michigan, or Missouri. Great work, thanks for all your work, sharing this with us.
Thank you!
Great build mate👍
Thanks 👍
Awesome build I want one just like that to drive around and not worry were I take it!
Thank you!
I really enjoyed how you built this one. Ironically I decided to start on a build of the Joe Dirt Daytona about a week ago, as I couldn't figure out what to do with this older, incomplete AMT issue I've had for years.. Oddly enough I've never seen the movie, so been trying to research as many details about the car as possible, and really glad I found your video. Like yours, it won't be exact to the movie car, but I am adding slicks on the back, and I've opened one headlight door so far. And other than the mismatched seat covers, the chain steering wheel, I can't tell what color the interior is supposed to be on the real car, so I'll have to improvise, as you did. Thanks for the tips on weathering, I needed to re-learn other methods of doing this, which, I find is way more fun than building them looking like pristine show cars.
I hope EVERYONE has a chrome "barefoot gas pedal" in their spare parts box!
Daaaannng! That's one sweet ride. By the way, Round 2 gave you a shout out on their CZcams channel (Round2foryou) in their August 2021 preview.
Yes, thanks!
Damn. You’re freaking a master at this.
Thank you!
Great build!
Thank you!
I was thinking of doing this myself great job
Thank you!
Love it Chris it turned out close enough for me and love that movie
Thank you!
Sir, love your style.
Say what you mean and mean what you say.
Your outlook into Scale modelling is unique and unorthodox, but
a true artisan.
My hat off to you for your enthusiasm and the way you do what you do.
SUBSCRIBED.
Thank you!
That turned out great! I also made Joe's car from the MPC Daytona...considering the age of the tooling, this kit still has quite a bit of life left in it.
Thanks!
Freaking brilliant Chris!
Thanks!
👍👍, well done sir
Thank you!
Nice build! That would look sweet displayed on a footprint gas pedal as a base.
Not a bad idea!
Love it bet that was fun I love doing that kind of stuff.
Yes, thanks for watching!
"Now I can sell you a car for 450 bucks, but it ain't gonna be no hemi."
LOL
What was the value of the Daytona when Joe Dirt came out? Were they desired cars yet?
@@sorenzx1923 they were at the time, but the movie car was a fake one.
Yeah, even in that state real ones are tough to find. Not gonna lie, i still hope to find one sitting in a forest somewhere
Sweet build Chris I've always liked the Daytona Chargers
Thank you!
Looks like a really fun build. I need to watch the movie now. Lol
Thank you!
One heck of a job there Chris!! Hats off to ya my friend!🤘👍
Thanks for the visit!
@@hpiguy always a pleasure seeing ur work being done!!
Awesome video though. Ive learned so much from you and my daughters watch your channel too. They are just getting into model building
Cool!
U're "phantom" part is an oil cooler for a stock car version. Surprised U didn't ketch that 😉
Thank you!
Awesome
Video review man, I like this Daytona
Thank you!
I love it. Not sure if I ever said this, but you do great work with cheap paints.
Thank you!
Very cool. I love that movie
Me too!
@@hpiguy I live your videos. Question. What is the best way to get real looking chrome?
A huge digitus medius to the rivet counters🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
LOVE IT!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Glad you enjoyed it!
It would be cool if there was a four pack. A Charger, Daytona, Road Runner and Super Bird.
And a Trans Am for Kid Rock's car to spit gravel at.... :)
Revell would be better for that. They have second gen chargers, 69 Daytona, 70 road runner and 70 super bird. Way better detail on those kits too. Unfortunately round2 doesn’t have licence for a super bird.
Need a 69 Charger 500 too.
Your vid inspired me to build a Joe dirt Daytona. Working on it now. Using an old junk general Lee glue bomb as a basis .didn't have a fresh kit in my stash.. Scratch built the Daytona nose and wing using borrowed parts as a pattern . Got her in primer now.
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you!
Hmmmmm....building this exact kit right now. Joe Dirt would be fun. You are my inspiration Chris!
Thank you!
I like that accul color looks awesome man
I think so too!
Nice!
Thanks!
That’s too cool man! Movie is such a comedy classic. But, you forgot the curb feelers. Single front, dual in back 🎉🤓👌
Don't church it up son it's Dirt!! "You like those tyres spinning?" Great build, great flick
Thank you!
From this, I just learned that the old General Lee was this kit minus the custom parts AND the nosecone. I'm actually surprised that they were able to fix the molds that much. They're far from perfect, but they're WAY better than they used to be.
That said, to make a stock Charger, the body would be wrong 'cuz of the rear window mod for the Daytona.
Nice work as always.
it was the Charger 500, which was then used for the General, then this. yeah, they get plenty of mileage out of them molds.
The newest release of the Dukes car has the correct buttress rear window from the 1970 charger body.
Thank you!
the "mystery" part might be a differential cooler of trans cooler
Differential cooler I'm pretty sure. I think it's included in every '69 Charger kit known to man....lol.
Thank you!
I saw this at Hobby Lobby (or it was Hobby Town); if I knew it could be made as a regular '69 Charger I would have gotten it; I might think of getting this one. Thank you for this video! Meant to get some photos and show you the job I did on the MPC '69 country charger (it was my 3rd time doing it), and think it turned out nice (but ended up selling it; but I did live stream some working on it).
Ohh, that one piece, I dont know what it is, but it goes on the bottom of the chasis, at/near the rear wheels. I forgot about it the 1st two times I built the MPC '69 charger kit (not sure if I put it on my 3rd build either). It wasn't [til] after I was finished that I noticed that part and was checking the instructions about it. lol
I was a little late getting to your video ...but great 👍 job 👍 always looking forward to it 👍 👏 and here to help get your videos 📹 out to everyone 😀 😉
Thanks again!
40:34 lol yes! Nice details.
Thanks!
Nice to see one of these done up as a beater rather than a pristine restoration!
Thank you!
I note to watch it tomorrow 😉
Funny movie. David Spade must be a Mopar fan. There were vintage Mopars in a couple of his movies. Cool build.
Hahahahaha, I’m diggin it Chris, damn that’s cool as hell! 👍👍👍👍🤘✌🏻
Thank you!
Cool
Thanks!
DAAAAAANNNGGGG!!!!!! what????????? I've never wanted a model kit so bad, I'll be at hobby lobby as soon as they open! Hemi 4spd I'll be scratching broddies and holler at the girls by Monday!!
That tin box is a keeper 😎👍🏻! Like the box art ! I love it! Truly you are a master ✌🏻
That Cool Tin box is definitely keeper 😎
It is cool. A while back there was a tin made for the "Red Baron" show rod kit that was pretty cool as well.
Thank you so much 😀
From what I can remember, the main reason there were the holes in the fenders was so that the front tires would have more space due to them hitting the inside of it at high speeds. Though it did lead to slight improvements in drag coefficients and better aerodynamics. Great video as always and a great build.
Thanks for watching!
That's not exactly true, real car doesn't have large holes in its fenders for the wheels. In reality it's got a simple mesh underneath those extensions. They served only aerodynamic and cooling purporse.
I enjoy it I've built a rat rod out of a 30s truck it even was rotted
That Chris is a masterpiece
Thanks!
I don't know this movie but I saw pictures of the car on the web and your model is rusty like the original (the chassis! 😍). But I'm not surprised, you did a splendid job as usual 👍😉
Thank you!
i think i might prefer the daytona over the normal 1969 charger its just too cool
Great build Chris, I just picked up the Daytona last Thursday and I'm getting ready to start it after I finish the Jolly Green 😉, Great Minds think alike 😃
Have fun!
Awesome Weathering Chris! Is this what you're gonna be driving when Jesus comes back? 😆🤣😂 Great build as always!
You know it!
"THAT'S WHY MOM AND DAD CALL YOU JOE DIRT!" - "THAT'S WHY MOM AND DAD CALL YOU JOE DIRT!" What a great movie. "I'M YOUR SISTER! I'M YOUR SISTER!" 😂🤣😂🤣
Life's a garden dig it
Thank you!
Can you explain how to use crackle medium cos I can get it to work
The part in question is a rear-end cooler; it was part of a NASCAR version. There also was a smaller oil cooler on the chrome tree that was meant for inclusion under the hood. BTW, the AMT version of the Charger Daytona requires extensive body work needed for incorporating the nose cone. But your "Joe Dirt" version is nothing short of genius. ( The Revellogram version is still the better version of the kit, but this one's okay 😊😊 !) Thanks, Chris !
What was the stuff you put on the chrome rims? Also the exhaust color
Watching the videos answers all your questions my friend. Thanks!
Now you can take it apart and give it a restoration. And it will be worth a couple of hundred thousand. LOL Nice job as usual.🙂
Thanks 👍
Nice build!!! Odd they didn't do a little better on those front fender extenders.
How exactly did you go about getting the back of the charger to have that bit of lift? I know you talked about it but I paused it at the end when you showed off the chassis, I didn't know if you did something specific for it or not
hi chris when watch you glue you us a white top lid with brush attached ,what glue is this plz.....tony london uk ......keep up the good work man
How do the fender fillers go on?
Hi from Maine btw
it looks like the exact some kit as the original General Lee kit with the Dodge 500 body instead of the correct R/T body... not a bad kit, but wrong for the General. You inspired me to try the same type thing with the General kit that kit I have
i love ur models, ur ragged look is awesome. what about using that stuff u brush on, and then it instant rusts? ive seen it and used it. not sure if like that better or the way YOU do it :) i bought this model btw ill post pics
As usual it’s cheesehead beautiful.
Thanks!
that part may be a battery box for a drag version chris
I’d love to find the history of this kit and it’s various reissues. It’s been this, multiple General Lees, the city and country Chargers, they dumbed it down as the snap kits, Doms 70 Charger, I think there was a Charger 500. Talk about getting your money’s worth.
Scalemates.com will tell you the history and issues of the kits.
The snap kit you've seen recently, such as my Coke bottle build, is a completely different kit.
@@hpiguy wow, I just looked it up. This kit has been in circulation, in different versions, since 1967. That’s insane when you think about it. You just did this kit and it went together really good.
Line of the day "mainly to cut off the whiners"😆👍👍
Where did you get your mold holders? Or what is that even called?
www.modelroundup.com/Spray-Work-Painting-Stand-Set-p/tam-74522.htm
Daaaang!
Thank you!
~you did a great job on this but I was disappointed in buying this one at its price~the MPC version of the 1969 Country Charger was a lot more beefier and sturdier and hardly no flashing~seems this was a very cheaply made model with a bad mold to make it~I built 3 MPC Chargers with a better appearance than what I just built with this one~as I made the drag option with a hood scoop and blower~that part at 3:37 goes underneath the chassis in the hump for the rear suspension sysytem where the differential comes out~there is a tab that accepts it as in the MPC version to me it looks like an air filter element but why underneath the car is beyond me~good job and keep it up~😀👍
Nice job! FYI, those cover illustrations are renderings done for the USPS by the late Art Fitzpatrick, whó was also part of the duo responsible for Pontiacs artist ad illustrations from 1958-1971.
Thanks for the info!
Hello my french
Where did you get your brown display stand ??? 👍👍👍
Google electric turntable and many will come up.
Awesome paint work! My favorite build! You nailed it!
Wow, thanks!
The mystery part is an oil cooler for a stock car version that I believe was in the original issue kit and the General Lee and Charger 500 version of the kit
A roll bar used to be part of this kit too....
Thanks!
I luv your channel I watch all your videos your an excellent modeler could you do some videos of ya making the days of thunder monogram chevy lumina stock cars ive got all those kits still sealed im about to start building em and I’d luv to watch ya build em and see how ya do it especially the city Chevrolet one that’s my favorite luv to see ya build a lot of older nascar stock car kits great channel keep the awesome videos comin you do awesome work my friend oh just curious you don’t by chance have a half of an engine block for a revell nascar 2001 stock car do ya I bought a dale earnhardt revell kit 2001 monte carlo and its got every part but half the engine blocks missing lol I’d pay ya for it if ya have one

I review new issues and rereleases, so if they ever reissue that kit I'd build it up.
@@hpiguy I’ve seen you review older kits though and I’ve seen the days of thunder kits in your collection when you did your tour video of your model collection be awesome if you could do a video on em
