Abut the Demo
This beach is at the other end of Rockport from Motif #1. Past Tucks Candy store and Bearskin neck. Small beach which would fill quickly in the warm months.This beach is surrounded by a seawall and big homes which will be part of our design - the background. The major shape is the bright sandy beach which has a diagonal movement and interesting edges where it mets with the ocean and the deep shadows on either side. At the very end some umbrellas rise up against the dark rocks - a highlight in the design forming a center of interest . The figures are added randomly enjoying the typical beach poses.
In todays painting we are doing a very luminous scene - the sun is bright and we are oceanside in the small village of Rockport. Because we are near the water on such a bright sunny day the light is brilliant on surfaces like the beach and umbrellas - while in the shadows light is bouncing creating luminosity. Watercolor is perfect for creating this effect of light because of its transparency and the ability to create smooth transitions in washes.

A Graded wash
A graded wash is a wash that changes over its length growing darker or lighter or changing into another color. It is one of the fundamental techniques in watercolor and can be useful in a variety of ways. For example in todays work we use the graded wash in the sky to emphasize the change as the sky moves to the horizon, or we also use it in the shadowed buildings to create a feeling of luminosity Also we use it on the beach to create depth.

I enjoyed watching this, thank you Gary. I like the way your base colours always shine through the top coats. Mine often turn out muddy somehow. I must practice painting figures now - your 'blobs' always look so much like people in various positions. Amazing.

One of the keys is to paint that underlayer with some strength in color, and then the second layer without many brush strokes. This gives you a good chance to retain the luminosity.
Other than that, choosing complementary hues, for example, orange, followed by blue or red, followed by green, these tend to produce more luminosity.

Absolutely you can do that and sometimes that has a fresher, feel, however, for a demonstration I thought it was useful to show my thoughts on organizing the figures with the drawing - also if you’re new to figures, drawing them, gives you a little more confidence to paint them well!
