- It's an honor to post up this interview of Peter Fernandez, the original voice talent for the Speed Racer series. This interview was featured on a very limited run of special collectors edition dvd's that SpeedRacer.com had released years ago.
This is by far the best interview I have seen of him, and I am very happy and excited to share it with other Speed Racer fans!
Thank you, Peter Fernandez!
We love you and we will never forget you!

Ah but Speed isn't just a character. Peter is Speed. Not only did he do the voice of Speed but he wrote the scripts. He gave the show life. That's why people call him Speed because he is.
Peter Fernandez is Speed Racer just Like Mae Questel is Betty Boop.
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
I ve loved that show for 50 years, definitely my favorite
My god, he sounds like Speed Racer as an old man!
I think that was actually his last role in "Speed Racer: The Next Generation".
@@SonicPAJ It was. Unfortunately Peter died early on in season 2, so his characters were recast. I still love Next Generation though, imo it's a proper Speed Racer Sequel.
RIP Peter Fernandez aka Speed Racer 1/29/1927-7/15/2010
Rest In Peace, Peter Fernandez/Speed Racer) (January 29, 1927 - July 15, 2010). Thank you for helping bring Speed Racer and anime to the world.
Unknown to me, Peter was really my old brother, Sixth Mist, who ran away from home years ago.
Thanks for posting this. I worked with Peter back in the 1970s when I worked as a recording engineer. His voice is absolutely EXACTLY THE SAME as it was back then and I would recognize it anywhere. Sorry to read in the postings that he's left us. He was a great director and voice and a really nice guy.
You worked with peter?
Im 60 years old and this is the first time seeing the man that i grew up with
I'm 61 and I'm blown away!!
RIP Peter Fernandez is my Hero He user to Voice Speed Racer, Astroboy, Gigantor, Ultraman and Star Blazers: The Bolar Wars, Gamera The invincible, Lupin III: The Secret of Mamo, Godizlla Film and Courage the Cowardly Dog. He did a Good Job Voice Direction of Ultraman, The Space giants, Woolf!, Japanese Film, French Film, Italian Film, And Many of Anime English Dub.
Thank You Mr. Fernandez. Your cartoons provided lots of us with after-school childhood memories. I watched Speed Racer, Astro-Boy, and Gigantor. Rest In Peace....Speed.
That’s SEÑOR Fernandez to YOU, or you’re challenging me on Indiana 500?
It was nice seeing and hearing Peter Fernandez (Speed Racer) talk about the series. He's right about Trixie, she remained a mystery throughout the whole series. No last name, no family, just Speed's girlfriend who easily gets jealous. But I love the fact that she can also drive! The series is just timeless, as good today as it was when it first aired.
And fly a helicopter 🚁 😎
I got to meet him at Sakura con before he died, real down to earth guy and he was charging to get something for him to sign if you didn't have anything and I didn't and we were talking and I said I played the piano and he reached in his bag and pulled out sheet music for the song and I found out he wrote that and he signed and and didn't charge me anything
Speed Racer was a wholesome good show.
Truly a great cartoon and with morals!! RIP Peter "Speed" Fernandez..
Such a great voice and talented man. Fun fact: he actually made an appearance in the live action movie as one of the announcers. He’s at the very beginning of this clip: czcams.com/video/YYsdcBacV2U/video.html
Speed Racer is part of my childhood, wonderful legacy!!!
I came across this by chance. What a wonderful man he was! And the voices in Speed were fantastic. Everything was said with such *energy*. That made it not just exciting, but memorable and inspiring too.
14 years later after the movie's release and I just realized who Peter was, and now I have a much greater appreciation for him voicing Speed Racer in the series and being a commentator during the Thunderhead race in the movie. Rest easy Peter, thank you for the memories.
Peter did a great thing producing Speed Racer. It was an important part of my life as a child and even today, having just purchased the remastered Blu-Ray set, I am reliving the joy I had as a child with additional enjoyment as an adult. Thank you Peter.
He was a lovely man and a delight to speak with. The names of the villians... Genius!
Seeing this warms my heart, this is a timeless series. 💚
I would run home from school as a child just to watch. I actually cried when they cancelled Speed Racer at our local television station.
I want to cry watching this. I'm about to do a review of Speed Racer and omg this man is so pure
Wow I’m literally crying. Rip Peter Fernandez
He IS Speed Racer! I got weepy towards the end. Great video!
I once did a body count of a single episode, and I'd estimated that about 40 people died in it.
I noticed this to speed never hesitated to pull the trigger
Speed racer AKA natural Born killer
Speed was a bath salt addict
96 people died in the great fire race
I recently rewatched an episode I hadn't seen since a kid called The Most Dangerous Race. I had forgotten how deadly Speed Racer episodes were. No wonder it had such an emotional impact on me as a kid. Great characters, great stories though.
Ah I miss Speed Racer series cartoon anime video games comic and movie most popular 90s classic my childhood so much love it greatness of voice actor Peter Fernandez sad news pass away 1929-2010 we miss you peter will legendary your best memories time life never forgotten it thank you peter memories and childhood most perfection peace.
Sigh. Whenever I watch "Speed Racer," I'm a little kid again. Many happy memories! Rest in peace, sir. Thanks for so much.
Not only did he voice Speed, but he voiced Rex/Racer X, too. So all I'm hearing is Racer X.
What a great interview even tho he is the only one talking and answering, and that last clip u.u 😢😞
Rest in peace.
It’s so sad knowing I will never be able to me the person behind what has shaped my childhood and life.
Interesting... I didn't know Speed Racer was dubbed with the same "Beep" system we use now a days.
When he says "of Kids" @1:54 the Speed Racer came right out of him!
It’s fascinating that the script translators/writers didn’t know the story arc of the series in advance but only learned it as they went along.
Glad I found this. Yes I was one of those kids running home to watch this. It's amazing to know that only 4 people voiced the american version.
Rest In Peace
Holy shit in general he just sounds like an older Speed Racer
RIP Peter...I had the great honor of meeting him when I was working with Anime Weekend Atlanta...
I once talked to a woman who was probably in her 50s or 60s and she said that as a child she had named her bike the Mach 5 and we started to sing the theme song together ❤ I also the best character name is Ivanna Von Vondervon.
If not for this guy, I wouldn't have Speed Racer in my childhood. So yeah! Thanks, Peter. You work touched millions of Americans since 1962. Though Peter has passed, his legacy has immortalized him.
What a sweet guy. And darn if I don’t adore this show. 55 years later
Ace Duecy? Snake Oiler? Racer X? How did he think of those? Great and classic names and they fit so perfectly into the whole Speed Racer vibe!
Don't forget, Lightfingers Clepto..
I'm almost certain he also came up with Captain Terror aka Zile Zazic.
I was watching an episode of Ultraman, and I immediately recognized his voice. It made me come here. Thanks for uploading this vid. I never knew his history until now.
You're very welcome. Glad you enjoyed it. Be sure to share it with other Speed Racer Fans!
thanks for posting this! Speed Racer is dear to my heart, since I was little. I got to meet Peter at a Chicago Auto Show years ago (mid to late 90s?) and he signed my Speed Racer shirt. I got an SR tattoo in '08 with Peter's signature under the graphic. Wish I could've met him again, but this video is sweet. :)
@truthfullyours1
You're very welcome. I am very happy to have found this interview hidden away in one of the collectors edition dvd's that I originally ordered from Speed Racer.com
Please pass it on. I am hoping to get this interview out to as many Speed Racer/Mach Go Go fans as possible.
Thanks for the kind words and God Bless!
My first favorite show.
I will always love Speed Racer one of the very 1st OG Anime cartoons along with Astro Boy & Gigantor
My all time favorite show. Yes, I ran home from grade school, made a snack and watched that show intensely! (We didn’t have a way to record it)
Seems like a very nice guy
It's Speed!
i wish they showed all of the speedracer episoids
Glad I Got the DVDs of Speed Racer. Fine Voice Actor. May He R.I.P.
I was three or four when I first saw this show in 68 or 69. I was memorized, and the Mach 5 is what kicked off a lifetimes love of all things cars from then on. It still stirs the glitter when you see that Mach 5 do something amazing with Speed at the wheel.
NO WAY! He was the radio announcer in the movie Speed Racer
Speed Racer is going to continue to be shown and remembered by many, many fans while a lot of newer and more recently dubbed anime series are going to be forgotten.
I think Mr. Fernandez is right... The technique for dubbing anime today is VERY flawed. We're not getting very many memorable vocal performances as a consequence of this mechanization. (Admission of bias -- I watch VERY LITTLE anime with the English dubs. I generally listen to the Japanese audio and read subs. There's a very few series where I actually like or prefer the English dub. That has a lot to do with the casting and performances like any other form of filmmaking.) Also, I think there is a tendency towards during overly literal scripting that satisfies a small percentage of fans but ultimately leaves everybody else cold.
Right now, as I write this, Speed Racer is longer licensed by any company in the US. The rights reverted back to Tatsunoko Productions after a lawsuit with the previous US rights holder who continued to try to market the series after their 10-year contract ended. It's only a matter of time before another company picks up the rights to Speed Racer and the series gets re-released on home video in the US. Hopefully, if it needs any restoration it will get it at this point in time with the available film and audio materials.
FUNimation now has the rights to Speed Racer
@@toastrave7820 huh interesting
RIP ,Thanks for the memories,💪🏼👍🏻🙏🏻🏆🏆🏆🏎🏎🏎🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁
What a legend.
He sounds like Jack Lord. I always thought Speed reminded me of Jack Lord in Hawaii Five-0
He Also Did The Voice Of Starman In The Japanese Serials!
Seeing him cameo in the Speed Racer movie as an announcer it always fun!
if I'm not mistaken he was an extra in the live-action movie well he played the announcer never knew he did voice of speed
He effortlessly says, "If you write it, you direct it" which is so insightful. If you can imagine being a character by writing about it, you are also directing that character.
Mind Blown.
PS. My family dog was named Trixie, because I named her that, and I got it from Speed's girlfriend Trixie, that Mr. Fernandez created.
Wow! I can't believe he dubbed Speed Racer! Wow
Great Video. My late brother and I grew up watching Speed Racer in East Los Angeles, then Whittier, Ca. I was out of the country when Peter Fernandez passed away in 2010. Thanks for posting this. May Peter rest in peace.
Wow, that was great. Thanks for sharing it. I was sad to discover that we Peter this past year. I'm glad that he was able to see his work enjoyed by so many, and to even be a part of the film. My kids enjoy the cartoons just as I did when I first saw them in the early 70's. We love the movie too.
Thank you Mr. Fernnandez!
Did you know Trixie's last name is Treadwell? (Stated in Speed Racer: The Next Generation)
Originally it was Shimura (JP) or Fontaine (US)
Peter Fernandez what a Legend
Now this is legit awesome.
Peter, you will always be Speed to me! Your kindness and compassion is what Speed Racer is all about! I and many other people who were kids back in the mid '60s miss you greatly. You will always be in our hearts Peter🤗
Real legends know him as Noiman Ja Rahr from Spider’s Web: A Pig’s Tale
Thanks for posting this! I had no idea how much Peter Fernandez had to do with the series, besides doing the voices. 😀👍👏👏
Great memories! Thanks Peter!
thanks for the inter view
Thank you for your work Mr Fernandez.
This was one of my all time favorites series
He was also the voice of Spiderman on Those old Power Records albums!
Peter you are a legend I just want to know one thing how many people did speed racer execute with the machine guns isn't he just a high school student
I believe you can see speed in more than one episode blasting away at villains with a machine gun just wondering how many of them were killed
The Mammoth episode is freaking Awesome
thanks for sharing this
The dub is the reason why it’s popular
He also was the voice for Mark Venture in Star Blazers--Season 3. Sounded a bit off, because is sounded so much like Speed.
He also did Speed’s older brother Racer X.
@@coolcat6303 Who unbeknownst to Speed is actually his older brother Rex who ran away from home years ago.
Corrine Orr looked exactly like Trixy
i love this vid ,speedracer was childhood
@psyk0sis
You're very welcome, Good Sir! Glad you enjoyed it!
Did he get a cameo in the live action movie?
Update: He did. I f***ing knew it! I f***ing KNEW IT!!!! ^_^
He also voiced Spritle and Speed Sr. in Next Generation for most of the series.
Fun Fact, Speed Racer aired on MTV right after Beavis and Butthead
Everyone should get automatic retroactive residuals for their work! More if negotiated! I always think it's such crap that people made scale and nothing more.
And your work should never be saleable. It should revert to the artist after leasing period unless they care to contract it out again, or something.
Detail to his Blue Shirt
I wonder who sang the theme song?
Can you upload the interview without the background music?
I named my cat Chim Chim
Is he sprite from speed racer the next generation???
Yup, that was him! ^^ And he actually voices Speed Sr. (the original Speed from the original show who's now the father of Speed Jr.) in the Season 1 finale of the show. :) (He says "Hello son..." after coming out of the shadows and out of hiding revealing himself to Speed Jr. hugging him. ^^ (czcams.com/video/vbcOH2Gi3lU/video.html) (Unfortunately, this was the very last and final time he ever got to voice Speed. :( (He died when they made (or were making) Season 2 back then by 2011, (he was already gone a year by the time it came out sadly. :( ) that's why Speed Sr. and Headmaster Spritle have different voices during that season, without Peter, they were NEVER the same again after, that's why I refuse to watch Season 2.)
He's also Benton Tarantella from Courage the Cowardly Dog.
@@princesspeachfan100 To be fair you should give season 2 a fair chance. I found it hard to watch season 2 after I found out Peter passed, but now I binge the OG series, then the movie, then end it with both seasons of Next Generation.
@@megaman37456 Maybe I will… :)
2:08
What did he look like at the time he did the voice?
Dunno, but I recall that the guy who voiced 'Wildstar' in Star Blazers looked a lot like the character did
It was made in 1967 so he was 40 years old at the time. If you Google him, there’s a few pix from that time.
I wonder.... What was his opinion about the 2008 movie...
Probably... Heh, he didn't liked it soo much, he was a elder, and the movie was too colorful, too fast for him...
(No, i'm not attacking old-timers.)
But, he ever shared his opinion about the movie?
He liked the film, he even took part in it as an announcer in the Thunderhead Race. He also gave the film his input and his good graces.
Pretty sure he approved of it considering HE WAS IN IT. I also consider the Speed Racer live action film to be the only faithful Hollywood live action anime adaptation.
Why is the audio out of sync?
3:18 -3:24 what episode is that?
4:52 As a kid watching, Speed and Trixie’s relationship was confusing. It seemed like Trixie regarded Speed as her boyfriend but he sometimes had eyes for other women they would meet which made her jealous. My interpretation was that she was infatuated with him but that he only indulged her in her fantasies to a certain extent, remaining noncommittal.
Check Pete Fernanderz Wikipedia He did a Good Job of English Voice Director his Career.
