I fucking love the dragon clip. How he starts self-consciously telling himself that the guy must have been lying since dragons aren't real, like he's worried that it might actually be true. And then he adds they aren't real *today*, as if they just went extinct. That clip has everything.

Actually from what I can tell most characters do use commas EXCEPT for the main character which leads me to believe it's supposed to be a quirk about him how his mind is "racing" and he speaks quickly.
These old dubs were always fucking hilarious. They're working with 3 frames of animation per word, and those words are assumed to be spoken in Japanese.

That Racer X clip might just be the finest 17 seconds of television ever seen. It has absolutely everything. X doing that completely extra and over the top flip, the awkward running animation and the goofy comment, Speed striking a ridiculous pose and doing nothing as his brother steals his car and floors it, the complete lack of audio outside of footsteps. It’s a tour de force of absolute madness and I love it

The funniest part about the dub is that they had the option of trying to make him sound more like a hero. They instead doubled down because they interpreted him being a jerk because his actions speak that loudly.

The fast pace and constant cuts between actions, the vehicles not obeying any laws of logic, the explosion that destroys the car, and the woman just lying on the road unscathed but seemingly dead. Finally, Speed, the man responsible for the crash, just nonchalantly walks up to the woman and says, “You’re fine, get up.” And the woman, who really is fine, just turns to look at Speed in confusion.
It’s just brilliant

It's indicative of the level of trust the writers expected the audience to have in the protagonist. You're just supposed to assume that Speed sees something with his keen racer eyes that we don't. Still hilarious though.

Apparently the company that dubbed this only had a day to translate and dub each episode and if that weren’t enough nobody working on it was that good at their job
@@tiablue9106 They probably weren't terrible at what they did. You try putting together a professional production in under 24 hours. I imagine if this show actually had the proper time and money to be dubbed, it'd be a much more typical cartoon.
@@skunthundler I said that bc I heard that (allegedly) they didn't properly translate the eps and just guessed what was happening based on visuals. idk if that's true I just read that somewhere. but yeah considering the rushed production it's no wonder it turned out like this, for some reason that's how dubbing often was back then
@@tiablue9106 if you buy the official English hardcover collection, you get a forward by the English VA for Speed (as well as the dude who did the writing and directing for the dub) and yeah, they didn't have much to work with. They only had the budget for three actors at $125 per episode but he managed to convince a friend to join for split payment. They had to name all the characters and write the script and only had a day to do each episode, which was about an average eight hour shift.
I love out of context Speedracer clips. I'm not sure he'd come off as any less of a complete psychopath in context, but Jesus.

I watched this show every day when I was 4 or 5. I think that might explain a few things about how I turned out.
I watched the whole show when I was a kid, and I can tell you these clips are all the context you need.
That first clip was great. Speed causes woman's car to careen into a cliff, do several somersaults, EXPLODE, then he tells the woman she's not hurt and to get up. Savage!
This just goes to show you that Speed Racer is the diamond in the B-anime family. It's funny how serious it tries to take itself and yet it feels like no one in the production team cared about it.
Clips like this prove why we don't need a Speed Racer Abridged. It already exists.

I used to watch Speed Racer as a kid and had a HUGE crush on Speed,even before I knew I was gay. I'm currently rewatching the series again after I all of a sudden remembered it.

When American animation studio dubbed the series as Speed Racer, they still thought Anime version of Go Mifune as too nice, so they decided to amped up his jerk behavior and turned into Speed most anime fans know today.
