Growing up back when there were only 3 channels plus one Local UHF channel. Speed Racer was the afterschool cartoon everyone was watching on the Independent channel! right after Gilligan's Island and right before Star Trek
My mom wouldn't let us watch it because she thought it was too violent. So I had to go down the street to my friend Michael's house and watch it there. While we played with his new-fangled (for the US anyway) LEGO block thingies.
FWIW, now I have a LEGO Mach V. I had the Racer X, Snake Oiler and a couple other cars from the live-action movie, but I gave them to my grand-nephew a couple of years ago.
This, MazingerZ and G-Force were the thing to watch!!!
Amen
WUAB (united Artists) 43 Cleveland and before that WKBF (Kaiser) Channel 61. + Johnny Soko and his flying robot and ULTRAMAN!
I loved that line-up. They continue to be proven classics.
That catapult jump jack sound fx is forever ingrained in my soul : D
Chah-chah-Chah-Cha-Chahhhh!!😂😂
Speed Racer is still one of my all time faves. I got to sit in the Mach 5 while cosplaying Speed at the insistence of the owner as the car was on display at a "con'" in Orlando. Pics came out great and made some great memories too. Thanks for posting
I remember watching Speed Racer on Cartoon Network when I was a kid. Along with Voltron, Gundam and later Dragonball Z
Miss those days
I watched Speed Racer when it fist came to America, long before Cartoon Network was even thought of, lol.
They didn't have cartoon network when I was a kid.
don't forget Ultra Man
Yup. I used to come home after highschool and watch Toonami on Cartoon Network
I was born in 1969 and this was the first TV show I remember watching as a kid after Banana Splits and I thought and STILL KNOW Speed Racer was THE coolest kid around.
I remember being in love with the Mach 5 since the day I first seen it over 50 years ago. I built model cars but wondered why there was never a kit of it. I feared I was the only one that wanted or liked the car. I can't begin to tell you how thrilled I was to watch this. Doing donuts, on the track, in the garage and the helmet to top it all off. Thank you!!
There have been 2 Speed Racers. The original Japanese version and the updated version. I have seen both of them. The Mach 5 was the most outrageous race car ever in anime. A car that can jump over obstacles, use saws to cut things, and could even be driven underwater. It was even copied into an evil version that could fly and even shoot lasers from a powerful cannon. Iconic car indeed.
Love that the mach 5 is now a reality but I think it's time they also made #9 the shooting star. The gold and black car driven by none other than Racer X, speed's older brother. To see both together would definitely be a real treat for sure. That was awesome to watch. Thank you for sharing it with us.
I believed all the buttons worked, right up until Speed started sawing trees underwater and they fell over instead of floating to the surface. Then Land of the Lost came out and it was all about the Slestacks.
😂😂😂😂😂 I’m right there with you.
I was 7 years old when this cartoon was shown on YV in Latin America in 1967 and I watched it religiously. I bought the complete series on DVD when it became for sale while I worked part-time at Blockbuster Video (remember them?).
I can remember watching these as a little kid. I’d stay up all night long watching over and over again.
What you need to do now is make the Racer X car number 9 The Shooting Star!
i was thinking the same thing
and they should also make a replica of the GRX too
I loved watching Speed Racer back in the late 60s. Did you notice that one of the gadgets in the Mach 5 is being used today? The built-in hydraulic jacks are in the closed-body race cars that look about 2 inches off the ground. When it pulls into the pit, the jacks extend to let the crew change the tires, then retract when the job is done. Life imitating art. 🏎😎
Just a few more psi and they can jump over obstacles, car crashes, etc.
Was watching this since I was 4yo back in '69. Loved this "car"toon growing up!!!!👍👍👍
My dad was very instrumental in teaching me about how cars work, and how to repair them. Speed Racer, Hot Wheels, etc were instrumental in making me a car guy as a kid. Thanks for sharing this. Been watching you since the Trucks days, and still do. Thank you!
Very cool!
OK but who else remembers this car as the Mark 5, as in the 5th iteration of the car?
Like Iron Man's Mark 6 armor?
Very cool, love the Speed Racer!!! 👍👍
I grew up on Scooby-Doo and Speed Racer! I still watch both :)
What a great retrospective of my favorite childhood show and car. I smiled watching the entire episode. Awesome job!
I was born in 1993 and remember renting the VHS tape of an episode when i was very young. Loved it and my old man enjoyed the show when he was a kid. So he went out and him and my grandpop bought me every single episode on VHS. It was an entire tote full. I was the happiest child in the world that day and for a very long time after. The fastest car on earth and Car with a brain were my favorite episodes. I got hit with two nostalgic moments with this one because i also remember watching what was then called "Power Block" almost every weekend in the early to mid 2000s. Man do i miss those days.
Who in the heck made me miss my childhood this morning. I'm now tearing up.. Man I loved that show. My mom used to tell me that I would run around the house singing GO SPEED RACER in my underwear and t-shirt on Saturdays in the1970s. Sir, you're right, I thought I was speed racer, WOW! What memories! # GO SPEED RACER GOOOO!😊
Me too.
Could you just imagine, driving your own Mach 5 to a car show. Hell yeah. You would have to most talked about car there. Go Speed Racer, Go Speed Racer Go.
I am smiling with a tear in my eye
man Stacey was truly my introduction to the automotive repair shows back in the day. So good to see you still doing the thing Sir!
Thanks 👍
Wow, does this bring back memories. Racer X; "Melange still races"; the Mammoth Car; Spritle racing somewhere on the other side of the international date line; the Mach 5 in a demolition derby type match against another vehicle with similar 'weapons'; a temporarily blinded Speed driving his car while being given verbal instructions from Racer X (who claimed he couldn't drive because both his legs were broken); and the list goes on.
That troublemaker Chim Chim too.
I watched the show as a kid. Hated most of the characters but fell in love with the Mach5. I read an article where it was made from a 79 Corvette. I have one. But it's out of my budget to make it a Mach 5 replica. I can dream though. lol Great video
In the mid to late 60's cartoons were being censored or outright banned for too much violent content. Speed Racer was a must watch. I remembered being asked Q: "that being someone in their late teens why are watching that child's cartoon?" I remember saying A: "Because, It's the only cartoon left with violence in it. Q: "Well that's what 'they' are trying to get rid of"! Gotta Go John Wick's starting.
Dude. Your commercials are worth watching, products worth buying.
Neat ideas. Stuck around for the full length. Subscribed. Much love to the show!
Awesome, thank you!
I wish someone would have made a Speed Racer movie back in the day with Jeff Gordon as Speed Racer and Tony Stewart as Racer X
Ever since I was a kid I wanted to build my own Mach5.....using a 67 Vette roadster and grafting 59 caddy fins onto it
My favorite cartoon ever, loved it, thank you
I couldn't watch this show without singing along with the song !! Speed was cool !! And The Mach 5 was Bad A** !! Demon on Wheels !! ☝️
Speed racer, and Star Blazers introduced me to the world of anime when I was a kid in the 70s, and 80s, and I still enjoy watching Anime today.
Dude Star Blazer , I remember that show, the wave motion gun....lol
Battle of the planets
Agreed!
Ahh yes starblazers,as well as gundam, and g force.
Yes. Starblazers
I was glued to the TV in the early 60s . I was thoroughly intent upon being speed racer when I grew up, and Trixie was my first crush 🥰
I found a diecast model of the Mach 5 at yard sale a few years back, I despise the movie theater but I was at the premiere of the movie, to my surprise there was only one other guy my age and his wife and kids who didn't seem all that thrilled. The movie was good😊, but not as good as the TV series.
When Stacey David left the show Trucks, I was devastated. But GEARZ has gone on to become one of the greatest automotive shows of all-time. No longer limited to just trucks, GEARZ covers cars, trucks, movie cars, tanks, diecast, guitars... the list goes on and on. How cool is that?
Thanks for watching!
I noticed from watching all the cartoons. That when they had the car with the hood open it had an in-line engine in it. And when the car was on the lift you would see two big exhaust pipes coming out of the right side of the engine going from a two into one exhaust. 🤔
Stacy, as a kid growing up in the 1960s, I remember watching Speed Racer on TV. This episode brings back memories! The tip about the Speed Dawg Shift Knobs was great too. I have a'92 Isuzu Rodeo in need of a shifter knob. Many thanks for the great content as always.
I’m 54 man I miss those times.
That was my favorite cartoon to watch after school
Is needed Saturday morning cartoon with speed racer!!!
i'm almost 62. I used to LOVE that show, but I remember even as a kid that the saws pushed my "suspension of disbelief" to the limit. 😁
Man! I never missed an episode. I was born in '64. And we had a show called "The Wee Willie Webber show", that showed it everyday. I used to run to the store singing the song thinking it made me run faster 🤭. As an adult I STILL watch it on YT when I get a chance. Favorites: "Challenge of the Masked Racer" and "The Fastest Car on Earth." And when I win the Powerball the first thing I am going to buy is this car 😁
was the Wee Willy Webber show an east coast show?
@@bariwambach4947 Yes it was. Philadelphia, Pa to be a little more specific. Showed a lot of good cartoons. Had contest and giveaways. Back in the early '70's.
@@369darkknight I remember watching the same show it was on channel 17 I believe. I lived in southern NJ as a kid and there were a few different shows like that. I also remember the Gene London show as well as the Sally Star show. I do miss those times. LOL
Pretty much all the cartoons of my youth have the best theme songs. Kids today won't remember the music from their shows in 4 years and I'm here still humming songs from the late 70's thru the 80's. Testament to the catchy melodies and lyrics.
This brings back memories and what got me into cars and racing. 😊
Wow, I remember my two older brothers and I running (literally) home to watch it. I don't think we ever missed an episode. Everything about Speed Race is a part of the "soundtrack" of my life, one of the best parts. Thanks for the memories...
Dude I sincerely want to thank you for the trip down Memory Lane with the good old Speed Racer history lesson. I've learned today that UltraMan & Giant Robot weren't my only childhood entertainment from Japan, but as it turns out my entire after school childhood entertainment lineup all came straight from Japan. I remember in 1974 as a little boy in the 4th grade when I was asked what did I want to be when I grew up, I always said a Race Car Driver, thanx to Speed Racer!
However I grew unto be one of Washington DC's baddest Funk Bassist. I did however race crotch rockets for a number of years though. After the expense and the toll on my body from wrecks after a while the touring & recording studio work took presence over the bike.
But thanx again!
My family weren't particularly huge gearheads or anything, nor did we have any connection to japanese anime classics...yet I still grew up watching Speed Racer in the late 90s. It's a series that will never die. Oddly, I'm the least car-savvy of my brothers and they hated the show and were annoyed when I made a big stink in the living room to watch it when they wanted to watch their shows. Btw, that's why I watched Gearz, because it was my brother's favorite show for a while. We forced one another to watch eachother's shows
You gotta love that Mifune Motors sports car, it may take design cues from the Chaparral and Porsches of it's day but manages to be it's own thing too!
Was watching Speed Racer in the 70's as a child. Then in the 90's as a 20 something.... Loved it as a kid and adult. Had the HotWheels car and would race it on my hot wheels track..... Good times!
Born Feb 1980. I remember and appreciate this flash back very much. The content you brought takes me back to true science based, awesome American pride. Not going to say my ethnicity, but say I am a male, and only 2 genders, a sighned by something beyond or intelligence. What ever you call it. Thank you for the content and flash back, and sorry for the rant. Much love to you and all.😬 Also it's a modified Corvette, only 2.30 minutes in 😁
The soundtrack and the incidental music of Speed Racer was a-ma-zing, and the rock and roll intro version a beatiful thing...!!
Nice vid, Stacey! Been watching you for 17 years now! You kick ass!!
Wow! Thanks for the video!
Such a cool video..ty SD!!! Love the Green Hornet’s Black Beauty and the Monkeemobile
On a motorcycle ride through north Texas we stopped at a car collection in Nacona. The garage, belonging to a friend of a friend, was closed but looking through the window like a 5 year old, I saw the MACH 5! Life got in the way for a while and we didn't get to go back and visit for a few years, BUT when we did.... There it was! I was that 5 year old kid again looking at the Mach 5! It was roped off, so nobody could touch it. I relived my childhood again, seen it live and right in front of me! I don't know if it was the "REAL" Mach 5 or not and truly don't care. The museum has since been closed and all of the cars sold at auction, but I got my picture taken with the MACH 5!
I was born in the 90's and it was not the delorean, the batmobile, or initial D. It was actually speed racer mach 5! Incredible fantasy engieering. My dad had me watch it when I was young and I fell so hard in love. then the movie came out and boy I was shook! totally different style but it matched so perfectly. I am so upset they are not gona make another. It was the Mach 5 that got me into cars! 1967 baby, it is so iconic.
Growing up in the 90s while watching this on Cartoon Network was a gift. The live action was also on point, but can't tell why it bombed in the box office. I would love to own this car
Just prior to that sneaked in infomercial, WHY couldn't we look under the hood? I suspect there's nothing unusual there.
I've been watching Speed Racer since about 1974. Always wanted that car. :) One fun thing is learning that in the manga (and the classic models,) the Mach is supposed to have a V12 developed by Pops. If I had a replica - that's what it would have! If I only had a million dollars...
Exactly… in reality, at the time, the engine would’ve based on old Ferrari, Bertone, or Lamborghini Miura and Countach v12 DNA
I love it! I remember watching "Speed Racer: the next generation" on DVD.
Loved this show as a kid, I would definitely drive this on the Daily!!! 🥹
The old Nashville speedway..I grew up at that track. At one time it' was the world's highest banked racetrack & the world's fastest 5/8th mile track..( maybe only 5/8th mile track LOL) ..NASCAR had two races..The Nashville 420 / Music City 420 as I recall..I watch Darrel Waltrup ( blue & gold #17 Chevelle) cut his teeth at that speedway. I was 12 or 13 & Darrel & his wife Stevie were very nice.( unless he lost LOL ) .CooCoo Marlin, Red Farmer, Benny Puitt to Marty Robbins, you name them they raced there..Richard Petty finally refused to race there because of the high banks so they lowered them...But it was something to see & it was a very, very fast track for a couple of years..
Great video. Love that cartoon.
Bunta smoking his cigarette just shrugs
Most famous race car in Anime sure.
akuma zeto and akio may also have something to say here , i am shocked how few people seem to have picked up on this reference
Wow 😳. Wow 😳. Wow that's awesome. I still watch that show my favorite. Show
Me encantaba esa serie! Cuantos recuerdos! Genial
I watched Speed Racer RELIGIOUSLY back in the 1960's...
I like this guy's passion about the Mach 5! Nice episode!
This has always been a fantasy of mine! This is truly incredible!
Wow, this took me back to the 70's watching speed racer as soon as I got home from school. Highlight of my day.
This is so awesome, my favorite car ever ❤😮 that's why I love cars and races
One of the all time favs.
I remember speed racer and I was amazed by it. Especially thr drone bird that came out the hood to scan up ahead.
Very cool! Love it!
Thanks!
Yoshida loved the Elvis movies VIVA LAS VEGAS & Spin-Out. That's where so much of Mach Go Go Go came from! 57 years since Fernandez gave it to American audiences and it is still strong.
I watched Speed Racer since I was a kid, I was born January 1967. I would even take that round cardboard piece from the pizza boxes, would draw the buttons from the steering wheel on it and pretend I was driving the Mach 5. Amazing it was almost 60 years ago.
I remember watching it in 68-69?, maybe it was my favorite, watched it before my mother took me to nursery school!, to this day I'm in love with cars!
Speed Racer was definitely an old school racer of the 50's and 60's. Driving in penny loafers, lucky red socks, white work pants, and a dress shirt. Not an inch of Nomex in sight. The only thing modern is that he wears driving gloves, but they were probably glove leather, not fireproof.
I remember when this episode aired; wonderful to see it again!!!! I grew up on Speed Racer!! I got to see a clone/tribute car at the Petersen. That was so cool but a pale comparison to this one!!
Same here Rob!
As a kid i had these two brothers who watched this show religiously so I'll watched and liked it almost bought the dvd series.
God, I loved this cartoon when I was a kid. And the car, I only wished it was real. 🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽
Oh yeh, Speed Racer after school in 72’ hard to believe that was over 50 years ago. I really loved that show it seemed pretty grown up for anime’ and the Mammoth Car ? Scared the heck out of me 🐾✌️🇺🇸
I am such a Speed Racer Fan that I named both of my Tesla’s Mach 5(Model Y) and Mach 3(Model 3) and got the vanity plates to top it off.
Cool looking Mach 5 !!
I'm 62 and can still sing the lyrics. #GoSpeedRacerGo
watching this in 2023 brings back memories
I legit remember when Speed Racer used to come on MTV after Beavis and Butthead. It used to be why i was able to watch Beavis and Butthead cause my father would watch speed racer after lol. God to be 8 yrs old again
Actually the front spinning blades were about half the size they should have been too small to be spec. Still great car.
it did have a nice body, very much like the show! but girls have that too. and that's all they have.
I lived in Dallas aroimd 2000, and a local FM DJ had the Mach 5, and then he bought a Batmobile.
I saw the Mach 5 once on 635
Great quick tip. I lost a socket in a tight space. Ordered new one. The socket is still there I guess, couldn't see it. Or it's somewhere on a highway. No, not a 10mm, a 13mm actually.
This was rad!
OMG! My Childhood Hero LOL Amazing!!!
THIS VIDEO MADE ME A NEW SUBSCRIBER 🙂
Are you sure? Although this work was first broadcast in 1967 AD, the "American racing movies" you said did not become a topic in Japan until the 1970s. Vanishing Point ('71) was one of my favorite flicks. When I used to live in North America, my boarding house owner once asked me, "Are police cars Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic in Japan?" I don't remember the joke I answered, but he burst into laughter. Because it is developed based on the knowledge gained from competitive car racing, each manufacturer can introduce such excellent mass-market cars to the world market. In Japan, the Suzuka Circuit was opened in 1962, and the Fuji Speedway opened in 1966, and motor sports were supported by the motorization. There are many championships that many young people were enthusiastic about at that time, but the car called Prince R380 in particular left a strong impression on me. It was an excellent racing car developed in 1965 by a small manufacturer overseen by Ryoichi Nakagawa, who developed the engines for the Zero Fighter and Nakajima Ki-84. It is also the ancestor of today's Nissan GT-R.
Maybe Yoshida Tatsuo made a diplomatic compliment to the Americans. I think life will surely be more enjoyable and richer if you become a person who seeks the truth rather than becoming a resident of a world of assumptions. If you want to know more about Japan, please visit my channel.

I watch the original speed racer back in the seventies when I was a kid
Seeing the Mach 5 brings total nostalgia!
So cool!!
Would love if it had a matching helmet!!
Awesome iconic car!!
Yeah I remember that being on MTV. I would have been what 17 or 18 at the time. Loved it. I take it, its got a crap engine or really secretive one.
LOVED THAT SHOW!
GO SPEED GO!
I was an avid viewer of TV in this era and never heard of this until now! Oh! 1967 is the year I got my driver's license and my TV viewing dropped sharply.
I was introduced to Speed Racer with the 90s cartoon
I was a 1st grader when Speed Racer came out and I was smitten by the Mach 5 and the show. Rushed home from school so that I could watch it before doing my homework and eating supper. I have very fond memories of it. We kids knew it was impossible to fit all of that technology into one car but it was TV and there anything was possible. We all agreed that the Mach 5 was the ultimate of supercars though. Didn't care for the live action movie that came our a few years back couldn't even finish watching it. Just didn't capture the feel of the animation.
Speed racer was the show backin the day 👍 love your cars man
