The editing does make it look worse that it was, but also. It isn't completely untrue that Kaiba and Yugi both took actions that violated rules and board state. Double duels didn't have official rules at the time (and may still not I am not sure,) so it can be hard to say what might work and what might not. But, they both definitely took actions that violated the rules as the show explains them.

Uh, hello!? Earth to Kaiba? Mask of Restrict? In fact, Umbra ritual summoned The Masked Beast by tributing two monsters for it also, so technically he cheated as well... - Players just randomly using each other's cards left 'n right out-of-turn without legitimately activating any card effects that says otherwise... - Apparently players can activate spell cards whenever they want... So many bs plays but these are the real ones that actually happened that I had to point out...

The real reason Kaiba was able to summon Obelisk, is because Lumis clearly states that Mask of Restrict "prevents you from sacrificing your monsters". Key word: your. It doesn't prevent either Yugi or Kaiba from sacrificing monsters under Lumis' or Umbra's control. Hence Kaiba using Soul Exchange to sacrifice the Magnet Warriors under Lumis' control.

For those of you thinking this is a real episode it was cut to show certain events. They made legal plays minus 1 (soul exchange) but they changed how the card worked. Just like they have done for card of sanctity and change of heart.
Mask of Restrict (anime) only prevents their opponents' monster to be tributed. Soul Exchange (anime) can tribute up to 3 monsters on their opponent's field, unlike IRL.
Kaiba uses soul exchange and targets 3monsters instead of one while mask of restrict is on the field.And to top it off he even got a battle phase hahaha XD

Curse of the Masked Beast Spell card requires sacrifices of the same level monsters. Kaiba even regular summoned/changed his monster's battle position during his opponents Battle Phase. Somehow 3000 Attack points is suddenly enough to destroy a monster that has 3200 Attack, and absolutely no explanation was given...

Kaiba summons Battle Ox to shield Yugi from the attack, destroying Battle Ox. Kaiba orders Blue-Eyes to wipe out the Masked Beast, successfully destroying one of Lumis and Umbra's ace monsters. However, Lumis Special Summons the even stronger Masked Beast Des Gardius. Yugi summons Gamma, the Magnet Warrior in response, then merges his three Magnet Warriors into Valkyrion, the Magna Warrior. Valkyrion destroys Des Gardius in a single hit. Yugi then separates Valkyrion into its three components and tries to sacrifice Beta, afflicted with Mask of the Accursed. Lumis triggers his Trap Card, Mask of Restrict, which prevents either of his team's opponents from tributing their monsters to summon stronger ones. But being Seto Kaiba, he screws the rules, allowing him to sacrifice Yugi's monsters to call Obelisk forth. Kaiba then orders Obelisk to pulverize Umbra, leaving poor Lumis to face Obelisk's wrath alone. Lumis is brought to his knees and surrenders the duel. Yugi and Kaiba win.
It should have shown Umbra falling and Kaiba laughing.
