    ABSOLUTELY one of the most stunningly beautiful operas in the late Romantic tradition KORNGOLD'S MASTERPIECE. And THIS RECORDING OF IT...can never be duplicated FABULOUS!! Bravi Tutti and especially to the Decca/London engineers for this fabulous SOUND. I have had this recording since it came out and listened to it in SURROUND SOUND Stereo HEAVEN!

    I'm glad that Korngold "stayed in his lane". He more than anybody, knew what he did best. A master of orchestra and harmonics rivaled only by Puccini, Wagner and Strauss. And on some days, he has no rival.

    My favorite of all Maestro Mauceri's endeavors. A recording of transcendant beauty.

    This finale has always been one of my absolute favourites. I totally enjoy Korngold's over-the-top representation of the afterlife. Perhaps it will be like this!

    I just heard this on KUSC (Southern California classical music radio station). Drenched in romanticism and bearing the unique Korngold stamp, I loved every minute of it. And the tenor is DeHaan.

    I cannot but totally agree. Marvelous music, technically perfect, but more than all, simply moving. And regarding to the old critic's claim, "that this is Kitsch" - well, for me, at least, this is the opposite to that

    This is an extraordinary opera and its music is too long left in the shadows. Korngold has proven his genius with this work.

      Yet, we know him mostly through his film scores. I do agree. He has proven his genius many times and in many genres.

    This, to me, is the ecstatic summit of all opera. It outdoes Wagner. I think the gates must have opened, and Korngold peeped through. Just listen.

    Pourquoi Korngold est presque inconnu en France. On passe à coté d'un très grand de la musique !!!

    Sorry, but this is not Gedda! Gedda sang the role of the blind judge in Act 2. The tenor in this excerpt is John David DeHaan. The music is absolutely glorious! I'd love to see it performed live in the opera house!

    Regrettably the only full video performance on youtube is a dreadful staging with lousy sound.

    • @Grazherz
      @Grazherz Před 6 lety +1

      the last 10 minutes of that performance are a complete visual disaster. What a shame this staging is so awful.

    • @jgesselberty
      @jgesselberty Před 5 lety +1

      There seems to be a movement in opera circles to literally butcher the staging. We pay minute attention to see that every note and word are followed to the letter, and then allow productions that completely ignore the scenery and stage directions, to the point of actually changing the plot. One only has to view a hacked up version of Wagner's Ring to see how devoid of imagination opera has become.
