    We'll keep Korngold's music alive via CZcams. At least we found ONE use for CZcams, if nothing else. RIP old soul.

    This is such wonderfully heart felt music. This performance by both soloist and orchestra really do the composer justice.

    Thanks for sharing this lovely music played in Deception with Paul Henreid, Claude Rains, and Bette Davis!! The soloist in the film was the mother of Leonard Slatkin, the conductor.

    The lovers of Korngold’s genius have Maestro Brendan Carroll to thank for keeping his candle lit on CZcams and for the meticulous research he compiled in writing the definitive biography of EWK. Read it!

    This beautiful piece was derived from a Korngold score for a Bette Davis film from 1946, Deception.

    The Radio-Sinfonie-Orchester of Franfurt is excellent under Wolff's direction. The real treat is the brilliant performance by Quirine Viersen of the georgous cello concerto in C-major by Korngold.

    A very interesting piece which makes us regret that Kongold spent his american life writing film music - I have nothing against film music, but it is generally forgotten - rather than writing "classical" music. This concerto seems to have been derived fro a film music. very well done !!!!

      @josephstaines2212 Před 4 lety +2

      I knew the work but not the cellist, who seems to be a really outstanding performer. I don't think you can call Korngold 'woefully neglected', there's been a keen revival of interest in him from at least the early 1980s with plenty of excellent recordings of all his major works.

    In Deception, the cello was played by Leonard Slatkin’s mother!

    • @PTCello
      @PTCello Před 4 lety +4

      There’s a funny story that in the cadenza in the movie the soloist played parallel tenths which is of course impossible on the cello. Later, Piatagorsky Met Eleanor Slatkin at a Part and asked how she did it, and she laughed and said they’d laid down two tracks.
      I laughed when I heard the story, although I don’t remember that passage in the movie.

    Some of this reminds me of Schelomo by Bloch, which ends on a real "down" note. Tragedy is depicted there and here.People are scrambling for existence. Yet, in 1946, Jewish people had to be grateful that WW2 was over. Do the survivors dare hope for a better life? Israel was created in 1948. Also reminds me of Yizkor, by Partos; this features the viola, and ends on a subdued, but uplifting feeling. Curiously, Bloch rejected any chance at scoring music for movies. Not pure enough?? Too compromised by commercial demands?? To my ears, this piece is certainly none the lesser for having been composed by a "Movie" guy! Bloch certainly lived sparely, and had to scramble and teach for a living.

      This is one of those rare pieces of music that could have easily been longer than it is. Each of the themes could’ve been expanded more to greater effect, and I’m just appointed that he was satisfied with less then was available to him.

  • @journeymancellist9247
    @journeymancellist9247 Před 4 lety +3

    This is the best available performance but the camerawork is terrible. Why don’t they train cameramen to focus on important things and ignore the useless?

    • @gerardbegni2806
      @gerardbegni2806 Před 6 lety +1

      It sems to mz that the work of Shostakovitch is much more minimal than this one, which is full of expressionist developments.
