We're talking about a Class that is arguably more customizable than any other class. You can use literally any weapon or combination of weapons you want, and just because you pick Dueling or Great Weapon Fighting for your Fighting Style doesn't mean you can't still pack a bow for ranged encounters. And with all of the Ability Score Increases they get, you can easily pick any number of Feats to make the specific build you want to make. Not to mention having more attacks than anyone else means they can afford to spend some of those attacks to grapple, disarm, or shove an enemy, assuming you don't already take a Feat or play Battle Master to do those things AND do damage. Oh yeah, and that's not even bringing up subclasses. To quote a certain someone who's been saying it sarcastically over and over, this is "the versatility of the 5e Fighter".

With a fighter it is really hard to go wrong when building it, almost anything is possible. You are one of the most reliable classes in doing what you do well. The large selection of usable weapons means you can stockepile some for certain situations . One time as a Battlemaster I pulled out a whip weapon and used it with a trip attack to knock an enemy off a roof to their death. Never used that whip again, but it did its job.
Another point for a fighter is that you can get a lot of personality out of it just from HOW you fight and why you use certain weapons. You could look at every background/organization and come up for a reason a person is a fighter. A Sage who read and studied the art of war to become a historical Battlemaster. A Noble knight defending his family honor as a Cavalier. A lone Guild Merchant who protects his own caravans on the road from bandits fighting like a Samurai. Or even a Eldritch Knight Entertainer putting on realm renowned magical juggling shows. The fun and flavor of the fighter is whatever you want to make it!

That's not that far off from a fighter with 4 attacks, and the warlock gets their 4th beam at level 17, compared with the fighter at level 20. Instead of trying to find more useful spells or items to cast for you, you can just see about building your character’s life and world. One of my Favorites was a Kobold Fighter named Rox, he was a miner in a den of Kobolds ruled by a Dragon, during an Adventurers raid, Rox had hid inside the Dragons main cave, holding onto a Stalactite on the ceiling, during the battle the adventurers were being overwhelmed, the Dragon's roared caused the Room to shake... The Stalactite along with Rox fell on top of it and killed it. When the smoke cleared, Rox was sitting, shaking like a chicken atop the dead Dragons corpse. The party thinking they were saved by him, took him with them to a town, he was hailed a Hero and overwhelmed by this environment... A guilt crept into him as he felt he didn't deserve this, the Dragon's death was an accident. Hence, he equipped himself with a weapon and armor, becoming a fighter and set on to actually be deserving of his false title as a DragonSlayer by... Well actually killing a Dragon.

    - The GM's annoying Lorenzo-clone Oni badmouths me and my party from the top of a rock bridge overpass that's 140 feet above us. (We're in a badlands canyon, tracking slaver gnolls that turn out to be his servants.)
    - Me, teh basic human lvl 3 Fighter Battlemaster lift my longbow up and take a shot at him, declaring that I'll be using a maneuver.
    - Crit. hit so 2d8+2 damage, ends up at 14 damage. I declare "Pushing Attack" which does 7 more damage, and knocks the Oni back 15 feet, right off the overpass.
    - The Oni falls flat on it's face in front of me, taking 14d6 fall damage. Ends up taking 62 damage. (82 total damage thus far.)
    - Walk up to the prone Oni, using a free action to drop the bow and pull out my greatsword.
    - Action surge. Attack the prone Oni with advantage in melee. Also declare a maneuver.
    - Crit hit. So 4d6+3, ends up at 18 damage. (flat 100 damage so far.)
    - Declare Menacing Attack maneuver. Additional 5 damage. Oni fails saving throw against being frightened. (Total 105 damage in one turn. Oni has 5 hp left and dies on the next player's turn, begging for mercy while being scared absolutely shitless of my character.)

Fighters are the most customizable class in D&D alongside Warlock, so what's really cool is that you can make 10, different fighters and have them all bu completely different. I've played two fighter and my first one was a half-support battlemaster fighter who used a shield to bash enemies and defend allies, drew fire towards himself and tanked hits for the party, gave allies attacks off turn, and had a +8 it medicine. My second fighter's a DPS Samurai fighter who has a homebrew sword(OK'd by the DM) which allows him to make a free action attack every time he kills a monster. He has a bunch of abilities just dedicated to dealing more damage and destroying hordes and he has super high athletics and can basically brute force through anything. These two fighter were both strength baned. I haven't even dabbled in dex fighters and even still I've made two entirely different strength based fighters lol. That's what's so great about the fighter class

The problem is people look at the main page of warlock and see the low spell slots. So even ignoring the fact that those slots come back on short rest, and eldritch blast only needs one invocation to make it the best cantrips in the game. Warlocks also get to deck themselves out with a lot of utility spells and abilities. A few good ones that are at will, passive effects, or just plain good. Like using an invocation for a slot to cast another polymorph, or 120 feet full color darkvision that works in magical darkness, etc.
Especially if they go tomelock and get the ritual casting invocation, which allows them to ritual cast spells from every spell list in the game. Not to mention the 3 any-list cantrips you get for selecting tome in the first place.

@@piranhaplantX warlocks are also amazing multiclass options, BECAUSE of their spell slots and pact magic.
You can cast spells from any spell list using your pact magic feature as long as you have the spell prepared. For example, a cleric/warlock hybrid would have both divine spellcasting and pact magic. This means that, for example, a cleric2/warlock11 would be able to prepare 5th level cleric spells, as warlock spell slots count for any spellcasting feature, even if they otherwise wouldn't have access to 5th level spells.
"You prepare the list of cleric spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from the cleric spell list. When you do so, choose a number of cleric spells equal to your Wisdom modifier + your cleric level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots."
"If you have both the Spellcasting class feature and the Pact Magic class feature from the warlock class, you can use the spell slots you gain from the Pact Magic feature to cast spells you know or have prepared from classes with the Spellcasting class feature, and you can use the spell slots you gain from the Spellcasting class feature to cast warlock spells you know."
This is a fucky interpretation and almost definitely against rules as intended, but RAW means that as long as you have the spell slots to cast the spell, you may prepare any spell from the cleric spell list. Nowhere does it say that they have to be cleric spell slots, just that to prepare the spell, they must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
As I have a fairly forgiving DM, I've used this interpretation with my paladin3/celestialwarlock12 hybrid (he believes he's just a regular pally); he prepares the paladin smite spells, and casts them using his 5th level warlock spell slots, along with using them for his divine smite. Only 3 uses at level 12, but it does crazy damage. One thing I've done is use banishing smite, next turn swing at the enemy, use Divine smite, and Eldritch smite on the same attack. You end up with (weapon damage)+5d10+5d8+6d8, MINIMUM. That doesn't count thirsting blade letting you attack twice, your damage bonuses, or magic weapons.

That, and our DM gave me a really hype moment of the campaign when the BBEG of the then-current arc broke my Fighter's arm and stabbed me with my own sword, so I asked my DM if I could push my telekinetic powers to their limit and use it to one-hand my Glaive. And my DM said "Well, that's awesome. And I'll allow it.". And we ended up barely killing them.
DM texted me the next day saying "Full disclosure: the party was supposed to lose that fight for a prison arc, but that was a really cool moment and I didn't wanna ruin that with a loss. And half the gang is texting me that they wanna play a Fighter next campaign now. So thanks for that one."

      This. Fighters become memorable.
I just got in and mine is already being teased back and forth because one character really likes mine.
Also she is already someone who helps a lot with her persuasion and being the only actual sane party member who doesn't think of arson 24/7
(The dms characters who tags along as their other family member is the BBEG really loves Arson so yea. Oh and due to that influence half the party won't mind setting something on fire)

I want to make an echo Knight where the echo has a weaker weapon. We attack enemies simultaneously to make them block the heavier attack and take the lighter attack, as we swap places mid swing so he’s blocking the light attack instead

I love making fighters. They just need some flavor to be added in character creation. One of my favorites was a Svrfeblin fighter named bean with the haunted one background. He made a deal with a primordial to not starve on the street. And was cursed with a second elemental soul that is like depression. Constantly having intrusive thoughts and fears.

Well Fighter is fun, i think the main issue about the class is, its the one with the least 'flair'. Its like either going on a magical adventure through cursed forest and fight the mighty guardian to reach the wizard tower. Or you take the bus. The fighter is the bus.
