This is going to be a little chaotic because it is my insane friend's montage of stupid things. So, on like our second session for the campaign that we were doing (it was my 2 friends first time playing and one of their moms was all doing it for the first time) we were staking out a building. We had climbed up to the roof of the building next door, and my friend, let's call her A, came up with the "brilliant" idea to jump across to the building we wanted to get to, and ended up falling, breaking half the bones in her character's body, and alerting all the bad guys to our presence. Another time, she tried to pull a stone from a wall and ended up falling 20 feet, and at the end of this campaign, we encountered a dragon, a chromatic one, and she was like "nice dragon" in draconic. It had no reaction

Honestly this was a big point of contention for me. My first character is a Paladin with Oath of the Ancients. And I did read all of the oath rules. And there were multiple times in the early game where I did something explicitly following the written rules of my oath which then broke the oath. I wasn't intending to save scum, but the game forced me to do so by breaking its own literally written down in-game rules.

I'm only level 5, oath of vengeance. I've never even come close to losing my oath, as far as I can tell. Is this really that common an experience? Am I just not far enough into the game to find the landmines?

I managed to murder the entire grove without breaking my oath but I killed king spaw and broke my oath.

i fine it easier to have all the chracter at a tavern then have an small encounter. That why not only does it give a reson to why the characters are interaction but it shows the personality of each character and how they handle the situation like if the tavern is getting robbed does the wizard shoot fire at the robbers or cast fog cloud to escape and get the town gaurds? do they kill the robbers or use non lethal attacks.

My first Rogue was an Arcane Trickster chaotic good gnome civil engineer. The mechanics just worked so well for a sewer / infrastructure engineer. I've got a badge from the King and everything. Of course he knows thieves cant: he keeps running into ner-do-wells down in the sewers.

This isn't even a parody. I lost my oath for at least three of the wtf reasons he mentioned. Trying to help an injured woman. Killing a corrupt guard. Helping avenge someone's brother and stopping a dangerous monster from killing innocent travelers. Taking something out of my own chest at camp. Finishing a conversation (have no idea what I did that could have possibly violated the oath). These are all things that violate your oath and it's not like the game gives you any ability to justify yourself as to why you legitimately did nothing wrong. The only way to play the game fairly with a Paladin to have infinite money

I like paladins. But dear gosh how easy it is to break your oath sucks. Something thats called interpretation, context and circumstances. Cannot complain too much, its a game afteral, not human DM with who you can reason your thought process.

Not only do I play monk in BG3, but I also play "way of the four elements."... I'm feeling a little attacked right now.

Regarding the first story, the DM is also the person who even gave his player the chance to do what they cobsider evil. If you don't allow evil characters, then don't ask your players if they do something explicitly evil

So instead of playing paladin, you could just be an eldridge knight fighter. Pretty sure they get a smite or two...and you don't have to worry about stupid oaths.

Maybe it's just me, but my Vengeance Paladin has only ever broken oath once on a misclick. Maybe I just have stupid dumb luck on my decisions or something because I certainly am not seeming to have the same Paladin experience as everyone else.

Dont tell my other dice, but my favourite is an orange d10 that survived a 10 story building fall (it went rolling off the balcony), we found it by some miracle, it was intact and it rolled a 10.

What’s hilarious is that the first ever DnD campaign that I was a part of was not in a tavern. We were on a boat. My cousin tried DMing for me and some of my friends and family. He home brewed a prologue of Ghosts of Saltmarsh to where we were on a boat heading to Saltmarsh instead of just starting there. It never got past the first session. Thankfully, he is DMing the campaign for us again, now that he has some DM experience. Hopefully, it goes well. I might ask him to start us on a boat just for old times sake.
