      [1st party] When I'm the only player trying to actually roleplay my character and make their actions make sense. Meanwhile the rest of the party tries to sacrifice a goblin for some reason and accidentally summons a few demons.
      [2nd party] When our ranger tries to put a pot on our druid's head just because he suddenly found out he had one with him; then our druid noticed him doing that and casted Poisonous Spray so he went down to 0 HP.

      Me and the second player in the game. It works out in-game, though, as the player who actually remembers everything and keeps notes plays a high intelligence character. Our characters, meanwhile, bring the charismatic chaos.

    Most awkward that happened in our campaign was a heartbreaker: our druid had used his thorns thing against a large army and killed like 80% without anyone else in the party attacking. This caused the captain to rout and after the rest of the team cleaned up the remaining grunts, the druid shifted into a wolf and chased down the captain. He was TWO SPACES AWAY and the captain pivots on a dime and sinks a critted bolt right into the druid's skull. He failed his rolls before the healer could get there and he died in my arms, his last words "I tried, guys". But in hindsight, it was kinda dumb of him because we knew the captain was one level higher than any one of us and could choose to roll an advantaged shot.
    And for me personally, that's way more stupidity than anything: I forgot to check the alignment of a beholder and my character thought he was a patron of my master ( playing as a warlock ), and went to submit to him. As it turns out, they're unaffiliated and chaotic evil, so he turned an eye to me and... I was turned to stone. No saves, couldn't resist, and that was that. Afterwards, the team member who always hated me kicked over my stone corpse, turning me to rubble.

  • @stTrooper-nf9dh
    @stTrooper-nf9dh Před 3 lety +11

    I had a moment recently when two new players just joined in on a game I was already two sessions into. For this game the primary focus is kind of on treasure hunting as opposed to combat (although there is still combat), and has two BBEGs that each represent a different faction.
    One of the BBEG's is a powerful frost mage who showed up earlier in the campaign, and was supposed to bump into the players again while they were in a town for a tense encounter that didn't necessarily need to end in combat.
    The only problem is the party split to prepare different for different elements of the voyage, and the only one who bumped into the BBEG was a newbie.
    He did learn that this guy had met up with a brigantine owned by the cult he served (who were seeking the treasure for unsavoury reasons) to help him travel more quickly up the coast of the island they were currently on, and decided that it would be easy to destroy their ship since it was just a Brigantine and the players had a full Brig. This, in their mind, would eliminate their biggest competitor or at least knock them out of the competition for a while.
    That logic seemed pretty flawless to the new players (who ran the ship, as the plot for this session was the original players were trying to hire a ship, and I thought by having the new players run one I could seamlessly blend the groups), and the original party didn't want to metagame (and their characters weren't within earshot).
    However what the old players new, and the new players didn't know, was that this frost mage was a badass, like demigod level badass. I wanted the games emphasis to be on outsmarting/outpacing the BBEG, and for him to be a recurring villain in higher level campaigns. I spent ages making the setting, and damn if I wasn't going to flex it's lore, and this guy incorporated multiple elements of the lore in one terrifying package.
    So the crew formulates a plan, a pretty good one in my opinion. The First mate (who was a part of a homebrew aquatic race) would swim under the enemy ship and force the anchor in place so it couldn't be removed easily, and destroy the rudder before returning to their ship. After that they would have their ship emerge from behind some rocks and launch a full broadside attack using every gun at their disposal, after which they could loot the wreck or escape without the threat of being pursued if somehow things went wrong.
    The problem is things went wrong at the worst possible time. Very wrong. The first mate made all but one check perfectly, and due to his quick thinking his side of the plan went off without a hitch. Disaster struck when the ships captain went to bring the Brig broadside. There were two people making perception checks with disadvantage on the opposing ship (the idea being that they were actively vigilant due to events that occurred earlier in the campaign, yet conditions favoured the parties plan). When the ship came broadside one failed (the enemy ship's captain), and one succeeded, the frost mage.
    From the players perspective they launched all of their cannons in a glorious hail of metal and smoke, only for most of it to be blocked by a towering wall of thick ice. All of a sudden giant spikes of ice began piercing the sea floor, towering through the water and reaching almost as high as their masts, and they were drawing closer.
    Long story short (or less long I guess) although none of the party took any damage, they came close to being impaled multiple times and only escaped unharmed because one of the original players blew up the BBEG's shoulder with a high-damage shot to the shoulder using his musket (not enough damage to count as massive damage, but he did good so I gave him a cool moment).

You know why its weird, why do you keep playing with him then?

      @Reicha Před 3 lety +2

      @@teaganfrizzell5158 Ooof. I liked it when it was rapping. If he's mentally atypical in any way just makes it worse tbh. Unless it's obvious that he's in no way serious about it and it doesn't bleed out into his irl behavior, I'd ask the DM to talk to him about his irl status. Friend to friend. It could land him in trouble not to mention traumatize someone (I put emphasis on his getting in trouble cause the DM is more likely to prioritize his friend's well being). Not to put that burden on you, it's the DMs responsibility. But it would be a good idea to bring up with the other players, if you have the wherewithal.
      On the other hand we had a long standing joke in a group of friends that my character took enemies prisoners for her harem. Which probably didn't make anyone uncomfortable, apart from the silliness of the campaign, cause she's a she and I'm female born, which is obviously bad. It wasn't long before *I* was uncomfortable and clarified what I'd been hinting - she, socially awkward, basically keeps them prisoner to be her bffs. There's zero violations past violation of freedom going on. She spared them death for prison time and community service.
      How red a flag it is can depend on the settinng and how well you know each other and everyone's triggers. Say, In CoS it might be in a backstory as a big serious dark secret, and treated with the severity needed. In a silly game I suppose it might slip if the character doesn't understand and the players all acknowledge it being wrong.
