22 Yamaha YZ250F vs 22 Husky FC350 Lap TIme Comparison

  • Did a single lap back to back on a 2022 Yamaha YZ250F and 2022 Husky FC350 to see which one I was faster on. Rode a fun old school GP style track that was a bit overgrown in a few sections on a very hot and humid day. These back to back lap time comparisons are a fun way to quickly compare bikes.
The YZ250F revs quickly and has impressive low to mid power for a 250F. The KYB suspension works for a wide range of rider skills and weights. The new for '22 model year MX33 tires work well and the bigger 450F rear wheel and tire (110/90) give some extra traction out back. Ergos are unique with a short distance between the seat and footpegs yet the handlebars are far forward and tall in the as delivered forward mounting hole. I did a 2:19.01 lap time on the YZ250F
Next up is the FC350. The 10mm lower suspension is immediately noticeable with a low seat height. The lower suspension works great in the corners too as the bike effortlessly leans into and flows around corners. The FC350 has a planted feel on track that gives confidence to push harder. I did a 2:12.71 lap time....6.3 seconds quicker than the YZ250F! The FC lap did not feel 6 secs quicker!
Going to do more of these back to back lap time comparisons between these (2) bikes soon!

Thanks! Great to hear you enjoy the channel! I am 6' 2" tall and about 190 lbs before gear. 350's are my favorite combination of power/weight/handling in a 4-stroke dirt bike. However after spending a lot of time this fall riding 250F's they are so good!

The 350’s are fantastic. Heck all the new bikes are fantastic. I have a FC450, yz250, beta 300rr, and I’m 100% sick of the air forks. I ride vintage motocross tracks and a couple modern motocross tracks along with a mix of woods and single track. I’ve done lap times against all my bikes. My fastest laps are always on a 250f, or my beta 300rr. But the betas not fair. It has the ohlins suspension on it now and you car blast through anything and always feel exactly what the front is doing. I think it’s all personal preference and feel and your always fastest on what fits you the best. I would take awesome suspension over 10 more horsepower 7 days a week and twice on Sunday. Nothing makes you go faster than dialed suspension and new tires.

Congratulations on your new FC350! They are a very fun bike and the lowered suspension is noticeable especially in the corners. The suspension will take a good 6~8 hours to break in so be patient if it feels a bit firm. The updated 23 350 engine has a lot more low to mid power yet still rips on top. Always fun to go faster than your riding buddies! Have fun on your new bike!

    Hi @mxengineer1,
sorry for this late comment/question, but I discovered your channel just recently, no need to mention HOW COOL I think it is: "real-life" - comparison of bikes, just launching them on known hobby-tracks, by an average-joe!! AWESOME!! -> subscribed immediately!!
I have a question regarding these to bikes: as I'm about to choose a new ride, I'm looking exact at these two (well: as I'm on a budget, it will be rather the 19-20'-versions of them). As a vet-rider who just re-started MX 3 years ago, after 21 years of absence and being on my later 40's, I'm very focused on low-to-mid grunt. I'm on a 12' CRF 250 now and am really excited how 4-Stroke 250 are generally pleasent to ride. However, the CRF comes on good at midrange, but is lacking a bit torque and response in the lower revs, then comes a bit too dynamic in mid, just to have no excitement on top. I would want my next ride to come earlier in the rev-range with more dominance, have similar mid-sensations and a bit longer and more exciting top power.
I'd expect the yamaha being exact what I want but wouldn't mind having that more top-power of the 350, just as "reserve", to rev if needed.
So my big question is: How do these two bikes compare in the low-to-mid power and response-department? Is the 350 stronger? Or is the powerful yzf even performing out the 350 in that area? If you could describe the powerbands in comparison to each other, that would be awesome, I'll appreciate that a lot. And last: which would you personally recommend for my profile, having in mind I'm looking at their 19-20'-versions?
Thanks a lot for an answer in advance and please: don't stop testing and sharing those rides and your comments!!!

Thanks for the feedback - glad you enjoy the channel! Also great to hear you are getting back into riding! The YZ250F sets the bar for low to mid power and partial throttle torque in the 250F class. Free GYTR tuner app lets you change the power character of the engine on the YZ250. Finally the KYB suspension on the YZ250F is considered the best off the showroom floor (especially the forks) and works for a wide range of rider weights and skill levels. Comparing YZ250F engine character to the Husky/KTM/Gas Gas 350's....the YZ250F has almost 2-stroke like snap which does give the sensation of more power and torque than it actually has. The 350 engines are also very responsive and produce about 10hp more at the rear wheel compared to 250F's and do have noticeably more low to mid power compared to a 250F. For me 350's have been the best overall combination of Power/Weight/Handling in a 4-stroke dirt bike. Both 250F's and 350F's are very fun to ride and both produce linear and high revving power over a broad RPM range. No wrong choice in the bikes you are considering.

@@mxengineer1 Thanks a bunch for your detailed and professional expertise. Unfortunately, it was not what I wanted to hear as now I feel as I want to have both....hahaha!! ;))
I feel as the more reasonable choice would be the Yamaha (Prices (even for a used) /reliability/parts-availability/"all around package"), but the bigger 350-engine of the Husky makes me really feel as it is more compliant to my riding-style as I always have been smbdy. who preferred a bigger, more torquey engine. I have a 18' CRF 450 as a Supermoto-Conversion and love it, rode and again ride an old XR600 in the woods and am stunned how good this old mule still works out there. I get around pretty well with that "Diesel-like" 600'er engine powerband. Saying that: I'm pretty sure to NOT want a 450 as MX-bike as this will definitely be too much.
However: the best way to decide which bike is best would be to test ride each. Unfortunately, I don't see this being possible, as dealers which have their own test-tracks are rare around here and I don't know anyone private, having one of these bikes (well: a buddy just got a 22' YZF as I heard....?!? :)).
Anyway: winter is coming, so this will delay a decision anyways.
Again: Thanks a lot for your help, I appreciate it a lot. Keep on with your channel, as you see: from around the Globe we love it (Germany here)!! ;)

@@crnobrnd I had a dual carb XR500 and later a '91 XR600 (had the XR600 for many years - kinda of wished I held onto to it). The XR600 was such a fun bike to ride - so compliant and comfortable (suspension and seat!). You have a current CRF450 so you understand the "any rpm/any gear" throttle response of a current 450 moto bike. The YZ250F may surprise you as it feels more like a mini 450 than the Honda CRF250R though for '22 Honda finally gave the CRF250R/RX low to mind torque and power. See if you can bum a ride (even around yard of parking lot) on your buddy's 22 YZF - that might help you decide. Getting cold here in Ohio so similar to Germany. I have been to Germany a few times and spun some laps at Nurburgring - that is a very fun place - cannot imagine riding it on a motorcycle.

My "old love" for XR's came back again, so I got myself a 95' and don't regret it!! :)
Yes, the term "Mini-450" I heard a lot regarding the YZF 250, that's why I'm looking for one. The new Honda 250 would be even more interesting, as I'm a Honda-Guy, but as I said: I'm on a budget and think it has to stay at the 4,5-5K-area somehow.

If you are talking YZ250 2-stroke - it is a different kind of power (more power over a narrower engine RPM range) compared to a YZ250F 4-stroke. 250F's are very easy to bikes to ride for anyone with broad linear power. I feel the latest KTM/Husky/Gas Gas 350's have the best overall combination of power/weight/handling in a 4-stroke dirt bike. For you next bike it really depends on your skill level. Talk to some of your experienced dirt bike riding friends and also skilled riders from local motorcycle shops as to what bike might match you skill level. Generally if you are coming from a 150RB (very fun bike!) and still learning a 250F would be a nice step up.

Until you can put ride the power of the bike basically holding it wide open a lot of the time then it’s really not worth getting a faster bike.
