  • Russian Premier League side FC Akhmat Grozny recently attracted a fair bit of attention when people discovered that former Manchester City and Barcelona star Yaya Toure is their assistant head coach.
    You could be forgiven for wondering what the Champions League winning Ivorian legend was doing in the controversial Russian republic of Chechnya, but it would be fair to say that there is more to this football club than initially meets the eye.
    In this documentary, HITC Sevens takes a detailed look at Akhmat Grozny, their president Ramzan Kadyrov, who also happens to be the Head of the Chechen Republic, and the history of both the club and the region.

      It's a Russian Republic so no, they had their chance in 2018 when Putin left them out of the tournament as Alfie pointed out...it would be like the tournament going to the US State of Alabama not the US Country anyway...I know you're trying to make a joke but it is diminished already as it is ruled out by those facts alone...

    As a Chechen this video was real quality mate I appreciate the unbiased presentation in this video. In Western media Chechens are always put in a bad light due to Kadyrov which is very unfair considering most Chechens dislike him. Thank you Alfie for being unbiased and always coming in with facts. Hey Alfie, any chance we can get a video on FK Slutsk? They're the Belarusian Football club that fans started supporting around March of 2020 when the world shut down due to the pandemic. The Belarus Premier League was the most prestigious from 1 out of 4 or 5 professional football leagues in the world that didn't shut down.
    If you've never heard of FK Slutsk, they have fans in most English speaking parts of the world (mainly due to their humorous name) and the story of how their owner went to jail, and how it was their quarantined international fanbase who kept the club afloat, is very special, and would make for a great video!!

    • @dozenazer1811

      It should be stressed out that Slutsk is just a city name which has a weird English transliteration.

    Kadyrov's influence on the sports business in most strongly felt in the world of combat sports (MMA). He gave Khabib an honorary citizenship of Grozny. He also invited Khabib to many of his programs as a guest. When Kadyrov made disrespectful comments about Imam Shamil (a religious & political leader who led the resistance against Russia), Khabib sort of moved away from him. Next he made Khamzat Chimaev his poster boy for Chechnya. The two have publicly interacted in social media & have been pictured together. In a more footballing context, he was pictured with Mo Salah when the Egypt team was in Chechnya. That caused a lot of controversy. Really fascinating how corrupt politicians like him turn to sports stars to validate themselves, reminds me the power sports holds in this world.

    • @FlinchDukeMercy
      @FlinchDukeMercy Před 2 lety +7

      Akhmat Combat Club and the ACA promotion seem to be his main vehicles, and it’s worrying when you see just how many prominent MMA fighters are affiliated e.g K. Usman. He’s really set the standard for sportswashing in MMA where other countries have done it through F1/football/boxing like Qatar and S Arabia/Dubai. Also wasn’t actually sure of how the whole Khabib fallout came about so thanks for saying.

    • @MrJ1GS4W
      @MrJ1GS4W Před 2 lety +2

      Not only that but Khadirov has made mma his main source of sports washing fue to the perceive nature of “strength” if gives off playing on the “warrior” preconception of the Chechen people. Not to mention his ties with Ali Abdelaziz and Ali’s clients. Bringing in people like Frankie Edgar, Fabricio Werdum, Frank Mir and most recently Usman to train with Khadirov’s son and have them pose for pictures. On the Chimaev side of the equation, chimaev had a really bad bout with covid last year to the point that he decided to retire (while he didn’t outright said it was due to covid, he has a scar on his neck where he presumably got intubated) but do to alleged pressure from Khadirov he decided to un retire, he’s fighting for the first time in years this weekend.

    • @FlinchDukeMercy
      @FlinchDukeMercy Před 2 lety +1

      @@MrJ1GS4W Yep, and combine that “strength” culture with the fact Kadyrov has stated multiple times that there are “no homosexuals in Chechnya” and you can see what idea/perception he’s trying to build. Abdelaziz had many things to dislike about him and that’s just a whole other side to it, bringing clients in to sportswash here. And Chimaevs nickname is even another sort of Chechen dogwhistle (I think), being “Borz/Wolf”.

      This is because Egypt is not different from Chechnya - it's also authoritarian. The Egyptian regime wanted to bolster its image among Muslim world and to reaffirm, it didn't hesitate to choose Grozny. Mohamed Salah may have known that, but does it matter? Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and even the UAE pretty like the Chechen regime, leave alone countries like Pakistan and Iran.

    Kadyrov and his cronies are total scum bags, but much like most 'strong men' in politics, he has brought about stability in the country (should be a country in my opinion), obviously through nefarious means which I am sure the majority of Chechen people do not really support, but I think the total exhaustion and apathy to conflict has left the people 'supporting' the lesser of two evils.
    I hope one day for Chechnya and its people to experience true independence and not at the hands of a despot, but much like Russia itself, I can not see that happening anytime soon.

    Bruh, this is typical Russia, where authoritarianism rules. You can't expect anything better in a club like Akhmat Grozny, which even renamed in honour of Ramzan's late dad.
    But I won't think this club is alone in the list of ongoing Russian takeover. Chelsea FC is perhaps the most successful example of how an autocratic power can give successes - and also to silence dissent. Recently, Putin-allied businessmen also takes over clubs in Greece, Australia, Netherlands and France, and this is really, really scary.

    So Akhmat have more balls than Newcastle to at least admit what they are? who knew but I must say Alfie I love these documentaries as someone always interested in football everywhere not just what Sky wants to push down our throats *COUGH* BLM loving Premier League *COUGH* its great to see the lesser known parts of football get a spotlight (Notts County/Portsmouth stories being a particular highlight)
