- In the early 1990s, the East African nation of Rwanda was devastated by internal conflict between the Hutu and Tutsi people, resulting in roughly a million lives being lost.
As the country emerged from civil war, the German government sent their finest asset when it came to diplomacy - a 73-year-old football manager named Rudi Gutendorf.
In this short documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at the extraordinary life and times of Rudi Gutendorf, charting his time in Germany, Iran, Rwanda, and more. - Sport
I'm only a few minutes in, but for what it's worth... please don't ever stop doing videos like this, as long as you enjoy it, if you can find the time to do so. I know they aren't the most profitable, and there are videos that clearly bring in magnitudes more viewers than videos like this ever will... but if not for you, these are stories I would never have heard despite them being quite literally the most important stories football has to tell.
Greatly appreciate your love for the sport but also the human side of it, something that is often lost in the commercialized game we see today. These are honestly works of art.
I love how he is not affraid to talk about things like the US Coup against Salvador Allende, one of the most revealing pieces of information as to what US foreign policy is truely about.
@@tim7140 That one speaks to me, because I actually have a trinket in my car in dedicated to him (a sugar skull I named after him). I keep it behind my steering wheel as a reminder to see every time I leave my home.
The only thing I would say is that it is important to remember it is not just US policy but rather the policy of the wealthy and the vain who lead to so much suffering; essentially all our foreign intervention has been to make sure that the corrupt rich stay corrupt and rich. That is not uniquely American but consistent across all empires throughout history.

I'm an american man in a place with very little football culture, so learning about all of this makes the game even more important to me.
Said it better than I ever could. 🙂💪
This man was playing the open world edition of Football Manager.
Love the videos concerning football in African. It is constantly overlooked when it comes to football history. Hope to see more videos like this.
The variety, scope, detail, passion and prolificacy of this channel have single handedly reignited my interest in football in the last few years. Thanks, Alfie!
'Sport isn't political' my ass. Great video about a great man I'd never heard of 25 minutes ago.
Watching this on the train from Dublin to Galway
As an Australian I remember this man as national coach, but man what a great story and what a great man!!
Viva Rudi you legend.
As a young man, he managed Meidericher SV (now MSV Duisburg) to vice champions in the first Bundesliga season 1963/64 in Germany - with all but one player from Meiderich (Helmut Rahn, scorer of the winning goal in the 1954 Wolrd Cup Final for Germany, he was from Essen, about 20 miles east of Meiderich/Duisburg) . A feat that would be impossible today. The board told him before the season: "If you won't get relegated, we will pay you a bonus", and he answered: "Not relegated? Write down: if we will be champions, I will receive 50.000 Deutschmark, and if we will be runners up, 25.000". After that, the board was not sure if they had signed the right man. Well, they had, with his tactics, he overcame all teams but the 1. FC Köln (Cologne), who were crowned first champions of the Bundesliga. Oh yes, a true legend, RIP, Rudi.
Loved the video Alfie! Only now have I found out that he coached our national team, Nepal, twice. And he had interesting stories here too. Keep on making these documentaries you calm Yorkshire maestro!
adore these videos, love how you fuse football with history and politics that comes together to tell a story that teaches so much and sheds light on often unknown figures, you really contextualise these football stories magnificently
We need more men like him. In football and in the world in general.
The life and career of Gutendorf would make for an amazing biopic. What a life he’s lived.
Alfie, my goodness, you are a brilliant CZcamsr! Please continue with all the documentaries! This was yet another brilliant watch and the documentary the other day regarding the absence of openly gay male PL footballers might just have been one of your best videos (and there's a lot to compare with!)
Wow, never heard of this guy ever, RIP.
I would love to know what his tactics were during the Hamburg years. Ironically he could train small teams to stardom but not big or middle table teams to winning a championship.
Great video Alfie! Love how you present the topic and your research to make this video. Very impressive, cheers!
Pls do a video on the afc Wimbledon story, how the FA allowed their move away and the raise in promotions they had. 9 in 11 years.
Also how Whyteleafe fc are now gone over a ground problem which ian rush acts confused about.
How there is a Phoenix club for the fans now.
I saw the video made by copa 90 on AFC Wimbeldon & omg its so incredible.
@@lalitthapa101 Alfie can do a uploaded one and a better one
Because Wimbledon have plough lane now
They are hopefully going to stay up and do well in league one in England
Alfie hull city win league one last season
@@balham5606 hope so. AFC Wimbledon's story is so inspiring.
Hope me makes one on them.
@@lalitthapa101 yes I hope Alfie can also
I understand he can be busy
The civil war documentary today was good
If he does one about Whyteleafe a team in Surrey England
It would be good also
Alfie is trying to have some non league stories also
@@balham5606 there's a lot of things he has in his to-do-list I'm sure.
I'd love for him to branch out & make some videos on Asian & African football aswell. Let's see
Alfie, this was the best doc you've done (that I've watched at least!). Really great storytelling and thank you for not 'whitewashing' history and calling out the US on destabilising some of these countries mentioned. Absolutely fascinating story, and one I would have never known.
Amazing video, as always. Love the story angle. Never knew about Rudi Gutendorf before. Well done mate ⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽
👍👍
didn't know about rudi either
quite a dark video
How’s it possible that we hear so little of this gentleman and scholar!? This world did not deserved such a gentlemen!!!!
These historic documentaries deserve way more views
You think you know football then Alfie comes out with a stunning story about someone you've never heard of. Amazing video
Day 1 requesting: Ranking Premier league teams if they had to play their starting 11 as squad numbers 1-11 (like burnley did yesterday)
Debatably the best video you've ever made, what a story and great coverage
Footballing legendary manager Rudi Guthendorf sir was indeed a person who united the sport throughout the world where he managed all the respective continents even if some of those respective clubs and countries were not successful and he overcame all the tragedies with ease in some of the respective countries, good friends!!!Rest In Peace to Rudi Guthendorf sir and we will never ever forget you daily in our resepective lives and every generations that we would be born!!!🙏
Best sports-related channel on the internet period.
Day 21: where would a team of Alfie Potts Harmer lookalikes finish in the premier league?
Above arsenal lol
This is one clickbait I was glad to have been hooked on...thank you for bringing to light a legend I would've never known otherwise.
Oh wow! Never heard of this man before, but what a life! This is another fantastic video Alfie. You have outdone yourself again here.
You are absolutely right in that the title is clickbaitie. You are also absolutely right that, in this case, it's fair enough!
What a remarkable man, and good video... Kudos
The top 7 greatest combo of father/son footballers of all time.
The story of the greatest football manager you never heard of.
I used the Rwandan genocide to provide some context when I was teaching about the Holocaust. I wish I'd had this information back then to provide a little hope to some extremely demoralized students. Excellent video about an event the world should have more awareness of. My heart goes out to the Rwandan people, and I hope I can one day visit the country.
Blimey Charlie, you're not just a pretty face. Nice to see such depth of understanding of political & humanitarian issues & dilemmas faced by football managers caught up in the chaos.
One of your best documentaries. Knew nothing of the man but will do some further research. Good stuff 👏
I had to watch it twice, once for the subtitles and once for the video.
As a German, I appreciate the effort to cover one of (West) Germany's most legendary managers.
What a man mr football this is what football is all about very good video thank you
Ain't gonna lie I'm starting to believe that you're really the best creator on youtube
This is incredible Alfie! Keep doing this kind of videos, they are very enjoyable and informational.
Why do all of your videos seem to tie in to either Saarbrücken, Kaiserslautern, or both? 😜
Anyway, another great video, Alfie 😌
brilliant video. probably your best. thank you for this fantastic story, alfie!
Another wonderful video Alfie. Your thought that goes into these videos is fantastic. Historically accurate and as ever important now as when the events happened. Well done.
Alfie, you never cease to amaze me. Thank you for this channel and these videos!
Stories like these keep me coming back to this amazing channel
Carry on with the brilliant work Alfie, we all love you
This is brilliant! I love these stories. The history, the personalities and the attention to detail. And I'm not even a football fan!
Such a nice video, it's one of the best football stories I've ever heard, great work!
Thank you for this video Alfie
I'd love to see in this channel the history of Millonarios from Colombia, specially the "El Dorado" times, when the team had figures like Alfredo di Stefano and Adolfo Pedernera.
Amazing video. By far my favorite one in recent times.
Excellent video Alfie , one of your best work .
I've loved every documentary you've done so far, but this one in particular was fantastic. I'm fascinated by the research you do on the nexus of sports and international politics. I know it's difficult to get lots of views on these kinds of videos, but I really think the market is there. You might just be a bit ahead of your time on this platform
I am loving your History themed Football videos. They don't call it the beautiful game for nothing,it has done so much more to inspire and uplift those that were seen as beyond help. Its why we love the sport of Football.
This is the best hitc sports video till now!!!!
I love all of your content you produce and obviously Europe is the peak of football leagues in the world, but your videos covering smaller nations (even some within Europe like Moldova) are some of my favorite videos on the platform to watch! Great stuff
i know these kind of vids dont get you as many views as you would like but i really enjoy them so thank you
Alfie, you're not only the best journalist I know, but also an inspiration. Week in and week out, you make masterpieces that make us love football even more. Greetings from Brazil and thank you.
What a wild ride! Easily the most interesting football channel on CZcams!
This was so good. Thanks!
Never stop making thus kind of videos
What a video @HITCSEVENS
Worth every minute the best football content we can watch on CZcams 👍👍
Keep the good work going and do more of these documentary style videos 👍👍
Wow Alfie made me cry tbh, what a story
Damn this video was incredible great job Alfie
Love this video! Wonderful stuff!
These videos give me strength
Enjoyed it. Pls carry on this video 🙏
Came here after he suggested it in the Q&A :)
mate keep up these videos they're incredible
Make a part 2 for his life... It's so inspiring
Great watch thanks for your work
Wonderful video! Guten dirt is criminally overlooked!
My goodness, this man needs a multi-volume biography of his life.
Super interesting topic, Well Done!
Holy moly. This is amazing.
Great vid
Alfie always has good random documentaries
A video on a football related channel from an Englishman featuring Wigald Boning (24:24). What a nice world we live in.
Amazing video!
Great research of African teams and football legends keep it up
What a brilliant video and story 👍.
What an amazing video!!!
This was very moving, what a character. It's like as if Roy Hogdson never made a risky club choice in his carreer compared to Gutendorff.
Smashing and informative
What a guy! True legend
PLEASE do more of these historic stories
A docu on Trinche Carloviche, a player Maradona called better than him.
Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that. Rudi Gutendorf proofs that what a man
Good story HTC, good channel
Such a fascinating video about a fascinating person
Please do a part two on him doing more stories please!!!!
On a video with relatively few views from several months ago about an almost forgotten legendary manager I'd like to point out the niche fact that Gutendorf managed Malmö legendary player Bo "Bosse" Larsson (pictured left 8:49) while at Stuttgart. Bosse was instrumental in dragging Malmö to the final of European cup 1979 where an injury forced him to not participate and Malmö lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forrest.
Thank you Rudi for signing Keegan and allowing Liverpool FC to sign the even better 'King' Kenny Dalglish.
Again, this is where your journalistic DNA shines. And kudos on the title hyperbolae mention. Keep it up good sir.
you should make a video about sepp piontek, his career, him as a person, his influence on football and how he became who he is by meeting with leaders of the world. i believe he met and talked with saddam hussein and others of that kind.
What an outstanding and incredible person!
This man really healed some deep cuts in Rwanda. What a man
Great video!
I'd like to make a suggestion, but I don't really know If that would make a real essay video: why the english game is so obsessed with "own goals"? I don't get why the tiniest deflection, even when the shoot is right on the target configurates an "own goal".
Yet another brilliant video. I know of Rudi Gutendorf and some of his story but not this much. A great coach but keep being at the wrong place and wrong time
About the clickbait title, dont worry about it. You actually gave a loy more than we expect.
0:41 ASparuhov. Typo, I guess. Thank you for mentioning him, as a Bulgarian.
Have you ever done a video about the football match that STARTED a war? Dinamo Zagreb vs Red Star Belgrade in 1990 which is often thought of as the straw that broke the camel's back between Croatia and Serbia.
Do a video on the ireland team who got to the quarter finals in the wc in the 90s
Gutendorf made Bora Milutinovic look like a long term resident.
