Barring a handful of good movies, 1990 to 2000 was the worst period for Telugu cinema. Mediocre stuff heralded by directors like Raghavendra Rao and vulgarity in the name of glamour was ruling the roost. Around 2000s is when we had new blood coming in and changed the style of Telugu cinema. Of course, 20+ years down the line, most of those youngsters from 2000s have become irrelevant.
Most underrated south director is Shankar nag who made malgudi days absolute legend way ahead of time.

The same way evey Telugu film directors always feel MayaBazar movie as a basic fundumental movie which has opened the door for entertainment with acting.. Organic love and comedy with a piece of Mahabharata backdrop.. We loved the creativity of director kv reddy sir.. Acting of Savitry and SV Rangaroa Ntr was epic.. It the most favorite since 7 deceds. Every north Indian will be shocking if you see the movie
Absolutely, we are lucky in a way growing up watching this cult classic. Even today my 4 yr old kid asks very frequently to play Mayabazaar. It is a movie that is for generations to come but made in 1950s.
Fun fact: Rajamouli gave all blockbuster films(biggest hits of hero career). Not even a single flop, or a normal hit in his entire career. I have never seen any indian director who have such record.

Extremely well said. I've always written this a decade ago and especially after Baahubali and other OTT era changes. Good that great people like him are articulate about debunking things like "Nowadays south cinema are good" - it was even better before! To remake the films and to earn their lives, Bollywood/Hindi cinema mafia (producers, directors and actors) always degraded our films and overshadowed our performers as Madharasi, Kaala waala, and many derogatory slurs. Those days people didn't watch Suriyavamsam, Jeans, Ammoru or Mudhalvan in theaters; they do watch now in theaters & OTT like Baahubali, Kantara, Ponniyin Selvan or Drishyam (original one) as hindi cinema is completely worn out and dried up! It's been always good. It was just overshadowed and degraded. Even Hindi cinema is strictly a regional cinema. Even now, Pataan, a Shahrukh movie, despite released in Tamil and Telugu; millions in South won't even know what the film is and who it has in it! We have and always had rich content in ourselves. It was just not exhibited! 😇🤫💯🙌

Telugu cinema (you call it, Tollywood) is particularly strong in story-line, that Hollywood is totally devoid of (see any Raj Kapoor movies, that has but a thin story-line but suffused with song, music, dance and good locales). They stole all good Telugu stories (without acknowledging) & built success on them. "Padosan" was the remake in colour, of B & W "Pakkinti ammayi" (girl next door) and is the prime example. Also all stories & sub-stories of Ramayana, Maha Bharata were filmed in Telugu, to keep continuity with tradition without break. If anyone wants to know about such a mythological story there is a Telugu film, with NTR (Sr.) playing that main role, including that of Ravana as the hero.

Even the different South Indian language movies have their own uniqueness. Telugu movies have amazing style, Tamil has realism as well as style when needed, Malayalam makes great stories from simple real life situations and makes you wonder why you never thought about it and Kannada makes real innovative content.

Amulji, with all due respect! you forgot to mention about Kannada movies many movies has been remade in Hindi which are blockbusters (OG- Kannada stories), Anil Kapoor Acted in Kannada movie, the great Prithviraj Kapoor acted with the legendary actor Dr Rajkumar during early 70's , Mani sir first film was in Kannada. and 71 National award for kannada movies so far.

K Balachander and Kamalhasan, were heavily influenced and inspired by Kannada movies. Infact those days Kannada movies were the best ones in the entire country. Amol Palekar is ignorant of this. Even Amol Palekar acted in a fantastic,brilliant and different Kannada film with ANANTH NAG and Shabana Azmi directed by M.S.Sathyu. It was called KANESWARA RAMA. I saw it 12 times. Kannada industry had brilliant new wave cinema a blend of art and commercial elements.

Kannada cinema was great in the 60s, 70s. But not in the 80s. In the 90s they came back with Upendra. They peaked in 2004. Remained underrated again until Puneeth Rajkumar success. Along came Sudeep, Yash and others. It became booming again and peaked with KGF 2. Now it is in a bad state in 2023 with only 2 movies hit in 8 months.
If Kannada cinema gets a big hit they overuse that movie formula and become underrated for some years.

Southern film industry has always produced rich content & however it did go through ups & downs just like any other industry. Bombay film industry aka Bollywood (wrong to call Hindi film industry) never allowed talent from Southern India, except good-looking heroines.

Chandralekha 1948 a Tamil Movie Was the first movie to broke the records of Bollywood movies. And it was the first Pan Indian Movie. Even the actor Ranjan acted in that movie was demandable in Hindhi but he can't survive in Hindhi.

I even hate the name Bollywood because it's so wannabe - ish (I say the same for other woods too) . All big south films were tried to be down played in Hindi cinema. When bahubali came out, people found it so hard to accept and they tried to make movies like dangal appear much bigger. Dangal undoubtedly is a great movie. But the denial that bahubali was also a good attempt is what irks us.
And honestly south India doesn't give a damn about what Hindi film makers or critics think/say. We have our own fanbase and the love and admiration for our actors will never change.
