Terrific and suspenseful film. Beware readers, there are lots of spoilers in these comments. Please folks, don't relate parts of the story in your remarks. Some people read them BEFORE watching the movie . . .
The dialogue that starts at minute 59 is just GREAT. The accuracy of the prediction of the war and its outcome, in a picture filmed in 1940! "(Hitler) in the long run, of course, he won't win, but before it's through (Schicki aka Hitler) is gonna spend and awful lot of blood".
In 1984 I paid 1000 dollars for a 26 inch TV. Right now in 2024 at Walmart a 65 inch TV is 328. dollars This is the same as the cheap radios then. It's so the Governments can mold our minds.
Joan Bennett was one of the sexiest women to grace film. but back then. they were never allowed to play up that part of her. I always enjoy any movie she was in.
I like tho how Nolan’s character treats her in a very professional manner, without making a play for her or any sort of love interest. He helps her out as a friend and fellow American but by not trying to start something it shows her as a strong character.
Francis Lederer did a marvelous job. Having to show such enthusiasm and admiration for the ultimate demagogue must have been difficult knowing what shmitler represented: hatred and murder. Incredible job.
I’m being sarcastic if anyone disagrees I come from old school these young rebels all went downhill. You think maybe the american culture would have learned something. Very sad when the government tells you what you can eat what you can drive where you should live. Sounds so familiar.
This movie was a geat find for me on CZcams. A good movie and history lesson at the same time. I like how it takes place in Germany and you see the buy-in of the German people. I read in the comments the movie was made in 1940 so a lot was already going on in Europe prior to U.S. involvement. The scariest thing is this could all easily happen again anytime anywhere. I visited Munich and saw its Nazi sites and the Dachau concentration camp in 2016.
This is what happens when people think they are ENTITLED, and no one else has any right to get in their way. I see it every day in stores, traffic and especially politics. 25Jun23
This film shows all the tell tale clues that Nazism was a cult, not a political party, and exposes the danger of allowing a cult to rise to political power. A sobering lesson for these times.
The people in the USA should watch this movie. Then they will see how wonderful it will be when the government takes over. Soon it will be like this movie.
There's the movie Not Without My Daughter, with Sally Field copied from this, except her husband was Arab and they went over to Lebanon but she had to kidnap her little girl back. He hid her, oh very drama, sad, action all in one! Very good
That movie was based on a book that supposedly tells a true story. I use the word 'supposedly' because there is controversy as to the facts. Even so the two movies are not related.
This is likely a much more true story than we know multiple times over, ive heard of this happening to women marries to muslims they go for a "visit ", and she never gets her child back its so tragic that humanity turns against itself but it has been the story repeated over and over for thousands of years.
It happens here in America, when Obama changed the laws for his folks in 2008, children were taken from parents to make way for LGBT appropriations of children and to give his folks an easier time of losing theirs. I believe he will still face a military tribunal and get his just reward

Kinda sounds like now if you dare disagree with the government. People jump right on you and call you a narrow minded bigot.
It's the Trump cultists who want to use government to destroy..
Terrific and suspenseful film. Beware readers, there are lots of spoilers in these comments. Please folks, don't relate parts of the story in your remarks. Some people read them BEFORE watching the movie . . .
Joan Bennett one of the most beautiful actresses of her time. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
dian kreczmer I think you mean Hedy Lamarr. That is the beautiful lead actress in this film.
I thought so too but she's Joan Bennett... like twins!! Hedi has an accent also, didn't u notice that?😶🙋
Only Hedi L.had thee accent, not Joan B.
Much loverlier when she dyed her hair dark.
Constance Bennett (TOPPER), her sister was a better looking Blonde.
@@barb6868 Nope, Joan Bennett.
Excellent film and timely. Thank you for uploading it.
In 1984 I paid 1000 dollars for a 26 inch TV. Right now in 2024 at Walmart a 65 inch TV is 328. dollars This is the same as the cheap radios then. It's so the Governments can mold our minds.
"What's the use of reading stuff when you don't know what to believe..."
True now more than ever June 2021.
If one is interested in the truth of life you might watch a movie. while if you seek some well-scripted acting look no further than the news. 📰

When was the last time a comedian did a college tour?
@T Z Don’t forget the “fear”factor.
There’s a pandemic happening- duh. No one’s doing tours
When was the last time a comedian was actually funny? They all think that they’re political humorists 🤣 They’re not funny at all just mean 😢
@@davidhull1481 Duh... touring stopped long before the Wuhan virus.
@@SBCBears Fake news.
Joan Bennett was one of the sexiest women to grace film. but back then. they were never allowed to play up that part of her. I always enjoy any movie she was in.
come on Benny Hinn. Sexiest? Try lauren Bacall or Linda Darnell
I too became a great admirer of her and watching all her movies one after the other
I like tho how Nolan’s character treats her in a very professional manner, without making a play for her or any sort of love interest. He helps her out as a friend and fellow American but by not trying to start something it shows her as a strong character.
Excellent! Thank You for posting it.
A great drama wonderful acting !
This is an outstanding movie! Thanks!!
Francis Lederer did a marvelous job. Having to show such enthusiasm and admiration for the ultimate demagogue must have been difficult knowing what shmitler represented: hatred and murder. Incredible job.
at 1:10:27, Freda ( Anna Sten) looked just like Marlene Dietrich , in her facial expression .
And it was released two years before Pearl Harbor! Never again!
A prophetic film.
Superlative movie relevant to today's world. Thank you.
Francis lived to be 100!
This is what happens when people think they are ENTITLED, and no one else has any right to get in their way. I see it every day in stores, traffic and especially politics. 25Jun23
Updated to add 3-28-24....still and more
Thank you so much for this. It helps give me perspective on the world as well as my little corner of it.
This film shows all the tell tale clues that Nazism was a cult, not a political party, and exposes the danger of allowing a cult to rise to political power. A sobering lesson for these times.
History; Is very capable of reliving it’s self . It has all ready many times already. Thank you.
The people in the USA should watch this movie. Then they will see how wonderful it will be when the government takes over. Soon it will be like this movie.
you mean in 2020 - it already has
Not if we stop the 4th reich aka clowns in america...everyone is pointing at the other side while they play both sides...just like the Bush family.
Field is probably kicking herself for showing Islam for what it is in that movie now.
@@DavidSmith-kd8mw Totally different films.
This movie was produced in 1940 not 1938.
@@michekids because of my faith i believe in Jesus and Gods Word, which clearly states that His Judgment on each of us is set to happen, even Christians like me will be judged as well, not because of the root of sin that is born in all of us,that separates us from God, but because of the Blood of Jesus by faith through believing in Him accepting Him and what He did for me and that He was raised from the dead for me, ive been forgiven forgiven that root of sin that separated me from God. I will be judged for what i did for Love with the right heart or wrong heart. Im confident that people who acted good but had evil in their heart Christian or not will get what they deserve even though Jesus did die for all to save all from that eternal place of punishment you hear referred to as hell, it is a real place and was only meant for satan and his crew of evildoers, but the unsaved will live out eternity there too as they have rejected The Son of God and His suffering for them. God doesn't "send" people to hell. God so Loved the world He sent His only Son that WHOSOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WOULD BE SAVED ETERNALLY. I pray now your heart hears His voice calling you back to Him ❤😇
Great film the handwriting was on the wall in 1940. William Shirer knew it to bad no one would listen
That was such a great movie! Thank you for the uploading.
AMAZING MOVIE. HOW THE STRONG CONVICTION CHANGES SO QUICKLY WHEN IT TOUCHES SELF!
great movie , 10 stars i give it
Great movie. I've seen it several times on CZcams. You can't mistake Lamarr and Bennett, by the way. Lamarr could not fake an American accent. She was too European. (That's not a knock.)
Brilliant film
Really excellent movie! The ending was great.
Wonderful movie! Thank you for sharing.
Terrific movie.
Excellent movie! Coming to "America in a Theatre" near you.
Wow! Striking ~ . . . . how immensely disturbing that it relates the tale of today's world, with its eyes wide shut, and sleep walking. 😶
What a remarkable film for its day too.
Thank you, an important inclusion in the film archives. 👍💐

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned that Joan Bennett looks so much like Heddy Lamar in this film.
Very Good Movie!
Joan Bennett was just a dreamboat in every way
Love. Old. Movies. Blk. N. White. Provides. More. Drama. 🙄
I think Anna Sten was pretty hot for a '30's chick. 😄
Great movie! Totally recommend it.
Daryl Zanuck alone among studio execs. wasnt afraid to tackle controversial social topics like this. Good for him--film could be agent for change. The subject, most unfortunately. is still topical. As Reagan said. "freedom isnt free"
@4:30 "Pier 86, that is the BREMEN ..." She was real back then. On the very day, her DER BLAUE ENGEL [THE BLUE ANGEL ] premiered in Berlin, in April 1930, Marlene Dietrich left Germany for Hollywood on board the MS BREMEN - never to return for decades.
@8:50 BREMERHAVEN: In 1958, a young man by the name of Elvis - the pelvis - Presley disembarked here to stay with the US Army for the next 18 months.

Really enjoying the actors in this movie, Hedy Lamar a beautiful artist and my favorite actor Lloyd Nolan. Great movie.
Except this is Joan Bennett.
Oh, my! What an ending! Wow 🙏🕊️

1940 Joan Bennett important anti-Nazi film and unfortunately as relevant now as it was then. 59:00 Great analysis almost 2 years before the US entered the war.
Yes, something reminded me of OUR leader...
Most Hollywood films did not acknowledge the concentration camps until late in the war. Kudos to this one! It’s the earliest one to mention Dachau by name that I have personally seen.
Yes, Herr Drumpf is Operation Paperclip fulfilled. Put over by the open nazi, Steve Bannon.

53:50. Flag right behind shows the swastika wrong. Deliberate? Or just an error during the making of this film? Very good movie. Listen closely to the dialogue. Really interesting.
