We are pleased to announce the product review of the new Calmotion 527F replacement controller for Fadal CNC machines. This is the second video in a series that will review the controller. In this video we will install the controller.
At-Man Unlimited is not being compensated in any way for this review. I would like to thank Calmotion for providing a demo controller for us to test. The demo controller will be returned to Calmotion at the completion of the testing.

I just googled the Calmotion products, the cost of the conversion in Aussie dollars is almost the cost of Fadal 4020 im looking at $6000USD is like $10,000AUD
You did great on all the videos. I wish you would make more of them. Which filters did you use for your spindle motor? I need to add some to mine as well!
I hope to make more videos, been a challenging time. I just stacked a few automotive air filters on it. I need to write down the part number next time.

Hello, replace the interface card and the problem eliminated my doubt is if I replace the input integrated there is a possibility of rescuing the card
nice improvement . Going to have the Haas control change to a centroid system.
I looked at the Centroid system as well. But with any Fadal you need to do a good amount of wiring, and with a DC drive fadal they can not support them when I checked. You needed to replace all the drives and motors, not cheap.
Go with Centroid, yes a bit more work but far more capable and get more bang for your buck. Technically you can use the existing DC's with the all in one but need to change the resolvers to encoders. However it is much more advantageous to just go with the oak board with a/c servos. Another advantage is the control can be moved to pretty much any other machine if for some reason the fadal dies mechanically and the cost to repair is too high, then you're not out the money spent on the calmotion upgrad that is only compatible with the fadal.
Hello Mr Atman i buy A fadal machine few day's ago. But The machine have one problem error 10 this is A spindle problem. Did you ever have this problem ?

i have some issue with my 4020 the X axis jumps when I go to jog my machine. any Idea what is wrong with it.
Tim, not sure if your still around a few months ago I bought a 2002 VMC-15XT and recently got it under power. I’m can’t stand the interface I’ve been thinking about doing a controller upgrade to something modern update with NXGEN. I’m new to CNC’s and I primarily use fusion 360. What are your thoughts ? My idea is it would speed up my workflow and solve issues I don’t know that I have right now
approximately what sort of price is this entire set? I looked at Calmotion website, and they didn't have a full kit listed anywhere.

No, you can use the same Fadal post and it will work the same. You can however use all rapid moves. The Calmotion controller will do linear rapid moves, it does not dog leg!
Hi @at-man , I got a problem and I cant find the solution, I want to turn on the fadal machine 4020, my screen shows simbols and letters like &**%A#@S .... I turn off and then turn on a few times , in the beginning it works, but now, it doesnt work, can you help please, do you has known about this problem? I Hope you cand answer me, best regards.
Nice straightforward install video. Will you be doing a comparison part machined by the original controller vs the new one. Does the upgrade increase your max feeds and rapids compared to the old control?
I would need to ask about max feed rates, the rapids could increase if you have enough voltage available in the drive. Keep in mind that the drives and motors are the same, just the control is tighter. I will be doing a comparison part and I also have ball bar data.

You can increase the feed rates as long as your drives have enough voltage, the motors, screws, and ways can take the increase velocity. Not having chilled screws you will get more thermal growth. It is in the SETP screens.

I have a problem with fadal 4020 error 18 amplifier fault on z axis can you help me
Only thing that error code describes is the fault line from the amplifier went low
I have the 527f as well. Very pleased with it, i notice you said your gonna send it back, have you changed your mind yet? :)
So far I have been doing a lot of testing and really liking it. Would be very hard to go back for sure!

Yes, these machines have there place still. I provide rapid prototyping services at really good rates by keeping overhead low. You can't do that when trying to pay for a $100,000 brand new machine. It's harder at production though. Hard to compete in large quantity runs with newer faster machines. But you can buy a lot of these machines at a lower price and compete that way, but your maintenance costs will be higher.
Sir , iam from India. I was interested in this CNC control machine. I have a manual milling machine. I would like to convert into 3 axis CNC control milling machine. Is it possible. If where I can buy this controlling kit and how would I install. Please guide me to do. Thanks..

I've been waiting for the followup video for the calmotion 527F. But it's obvious you are busy. Does this new controller help prevent "banging" from abrupt stopping and direction changes when running higher feed rates? I assume the ramp control does this. Do you have any input. I'm seriously considering this upgrade.
Hello Jerry, videos are a long time coming, I have been busy from all angles. I have been running a ton of parts through the calmotion controller. There was some minor growing pains that calmotion addressed immedetly and after that I have had no issues. I did a machine service trip and ran an original Fadal controller, huge differences. The moves are much more crisp and precisis with none of the slamming. I highly recommend it.Tim

Is it even worth it to retro fit a 2000$ machine with a 6500$+ controller?
You could easily spend 6500 for freight and rigging on a machine of that size. I would say yes if the machine is good. ( i have 2 Fadals)
Hmm.. looks OK :) but the price tag....well...almost like buying another used CNC :(
Cheaper than a new cnc mill though.
Make sure to evaluate the total cost. Yes, this controller is not the cheapest option out there. When you add in installation costs and time spent learning a new controller, the Calmotion has the best value in my opinion.
You would be hard pressed to find another used machine that will hold geometry at 250 ipm. I love the 527f, worth every penny i spent.

Was joking mostly. The monitor we put there was just what we had laying around and we had access to a laser cutter.
