  • Join me today as I am sharing my long term observations and review of my beloved Panasonic Lumix 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 Micro Four Thirds lens. This lens is one of the first lens that I bought for my Micro Four Thirds camera system, and could possibly be one of the main reason why I switched to Micro Four Thirds. I mainly use this lens for travel photography, but sometimes it works well for non-travel situations as well. In this video I also shared my sample pictures taken using this lens. Watch until the end to find out more about my thoughts on this wonderful lens!

    Still my most used lens after many years of shooting. Its my default every day/travel lens. I have many other lenses which are better for specific circumstances, but this one covers about 80% of what I shoot. Love it! 🙂

    Couldn't agree more - I have used Lumix for many years. The quality of standard lenses is very good. The OIS works well. I have a few Japanese Leica lenses for MFT, which are great, but expensive and you need to really blow up pics to see the difference. I have a GX85 and a G85. Thanks for the video.

    Hi Gary, Im a recent convert to MFT, thanks to all the videos I watched, a lot of them yours. I purchased that 14-140 mm lens mainly for travel purposes, and I'm happy that you give it high praise for its versatility. I also have the X100V, and I had very high expectations of it, but I was very disappointed how it overheats so easily, so I no longer want to use it as my EDC and for travel. So I am now solidly for MFT with a GX9. But now have GAS for MFT lens... 😅FF is just very heavy (I also have the S5 with various lens). Panasonic is just so underrated! I even also have the LX7, LX100, and the FZ150 that goes from an incredible 24-600! And very nice pictures Ive taken from them, too! So happy to now be among MFT users!

    I have two of this lens. One is almost always on a G7 and the other is the most used on my E-M1 Mk2.
    The first version was bigger and heavier and not quite as fast, so you missed that one.

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  Před 9 měsíci

      That was the 14-140mm f4-5.8, I always think of it as not directly related to the current 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 due to the different aperture and design.

    Welke lens heeft jouw voorkeur, op een GX85 camera, de 14-140mm of Olympus 12-200mm, beeldkwaliteit, stabilisatie......?

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  Před 11 měsíci +1

      There's no straightforward answer. Regarding sharpness, my 14-140mm is sharper than the 12-200 but it could be due to sample variation. In terms of stabilization, only the 14-140 has lens stabilizer, but the GX85 has in body IS, so it's almost similar. Here's a comparison video of both 14-140 and 12-200, hope this helps to explain further: czcams.com/video/wescWoCxp2Y/video.html

    Been looking at lense for years, advantage as you've said, is it's a handy walk around lense. Images may be a little soft but punch can be added in post production. Wonder how it compates against the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Lens.

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  Před 8 měsíci +1

      This 14-140 is my favorite travel lens when I need a superzoom lens. I also have the review of the Olympus 12-200mm lens which you already watched. I personally still prefer the 14-140mm because it is significantly lighter. But if you frequently find yourself shooting at longer telephoto focal lengths, then the 12-200mm might be a better option.

      @Gary_W  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Essentially they are the same, but some people are looking for special characteristics on video lens, beautiful flare, cinematic bokeh, etc. The 14-140mm is a good lens for video.

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  Před 5 měsíci

      I want to say that the G7 is already very respectable. I'm using the G85 which doesn't have any improvement in image quality compared to your G7. I'd say stick with the G7, and consider upgrading the lens instead.

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  Před 9 měsíci

      If it is outdoor during the day with plenty of light, this lens will do well for sport. I had used this lens to photography a bycicle group, and got plenty of good shots. For indoor or during lower light situation, you can still use it but you may need to raise the ISO to get the appropriate shutter speed.

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  Před 6 měsíci

      I think the lens would work on Olympus bodies but you might have to choose between lens IS or in body IS. As far as I know, Panasonic lens IS could not sync with Olympus in body IS. Hope this helps!

  • @manfredmisch198

    I struggle with this lens very often (I have the first of the f3.5-5.6 version, which is not the latest weather sealed). The image quality is very good for a superzoom, as well as the size and weight. What I don't like at all about my copy is the stiff, jerky and sluggish zoom ring. It makes it very difficult to zoom accurately and in small increments. Unfortunately, I don't have a photo store nearby to try out whether this is generally the case or only with my copy.

    • @Gary_W

      @@Gary_W Mine... well... If I need to zoom from 14 to 140mm feels like the smoothest... If I need small increments as @manfredmisch198 said, it's very stiff and jerky. Frustrating, but I love the lens.

      @2kime Před 3 měsíci

      I have a 14-140 too. I had to work on the zoomring to loosen it. Finaly, finaly it came around. But still I need to handle it first when slowly zooming. I think this a lumix thing, leica is much better I guess. Frans/Bali

    Hey Gary , been watching a lot of your videos learning a lot thank you! I have a dilemma, I have a gx9, what combination of lens would you suggest for on a month long trip to Japan?
    Panasonic 12-32mm
    Panasonic 20mm f1.7
    Panasonic 45-150mm
    Leica 8-18mm
    Leica 12-60mm
    Any suggestions appreciated!

    • @ElectronInc
      @ElectronInc Před rokem +2

      Hi Philip,
      I have been twice to Japan (and planning to go next year again), where I brought with me the following lenses:
      - Olympus 12-40mm f2.8,
      - Olympus 45mm f1.8,
      - Panasonic 15mm f1.7.
      Out of the three, the 45 was the one I regretted bringing with me, not that it took too much space, but I didn't use it at all.
      I used my 12-40mm f2.8 during daylight every single day of my trip as it is sharp, good enough from wide to portrait, and great for close-ups. Therefore I believe your 12-60 would be sufficient to cover most of your needs.
      I also used my 15mm f1.7 for street and city nightscape when I wanted to capture the atmosphere of the cities at night.
      Up to you to choose between 8-18 f2.8 or 20 1.7, but I'd suggest to go with the 20 1.7 as it is way smaller, lighter and faster than the 8-18.
      What I definitely lacked and regretted not to have was a tele-zoom lens such as your 45-150mm. Many times I could have captured from far away some wild animals, and felt immensely frustrated not to be able to. Therefore, as I believe the 45-150mm is relatively small, I'd suggest you take it with you in completion of your 12-60mm.
      The 12-32mm is really compact too and great for travel but you might miss the gap between 32mm and 45mm, which is covered by the 12-60 that is faster at 12mm than the 12-32mm.
      I recently acquired an Oly 40-150mm 4.0-5.6.
      All in all except long distances subjects, I felt so at ease with my 12-40 but next time I will bring along my 40-150 as it is super light and packable with my 12-40mm and 15mm.
      Hope that helps.

    • @mushroomgod123
      @mushroomgod123 Před rokem +1

      @@ElectronIncthanks for the breakdown. I think for now the 45-150mm is definitely coming with me and so is the 20mm for how small it is. Just can't make up my mind on the 8-18 and 12-60 or just to take both. I guess majority of my shots will be covered more by the 12-60, but just the fear of missing out those crisp wide angle with the 8-18 when I need it. Thanks though, gave me some good insight.

    • @ElectronInc
      @ElectronInc Před rokem +1

      @@mushroomgod123 The 8-18 is pretty big, I never had it in my hands but by the look of it, it seems it is as big as your 12-60. At the wider angle, you'd lose 4mm (8mm FF) of field of view, however you'd miss 42mm (84mm FF) at the longer length. 18mm would be covered by your 12-60 and with the 8-18mm, this focal will be at 4.0 aperture whereas you might gain a few stops at the same length, probably ~f3.2/ f3.5. This is not to be neglected especially during day time in the shadows (i.e the Kyoto Bamboo forest).
      Plus you'd lose a massive gap between your Pany 20 and the 45-150mm.
      If 8mm is that crucial then go for it, but if it is for fewer instances where you could merge 2 pictures in post process to emulate a wider picture, the 12-60 would be the one.
      Eventually, I read the 12-60 is great for close-ups : www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4219223
      Something you'd miss if you go to botanical gardens. And the 40-150 needs a farther distance for minimal focus...

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  Před 11 měsíci +3

      Congrats on your trip to Japan, it's an incredible place! I've been to Japan a few times already, I think the 12-60mm will be a better choice most of the time. I brought my wide angle lenses to Japan a few times, but I ended up shooting more around 12-40mm and not really getting a lot of keeper on sub 12mm focal length. The 45-150mm could be useful for getting a close up of Mt Fuji from multiple vantage points across the island. Definitely bring the 20mm for street photography and for night time photography. I use the 20mm a lot in Japan and got a lot of nice urban/street photographs.
