I was using aux cable it sounded so bad but after I used optical cable it sounded 300x better. Definitely worth it for the $36 Canadian price.

Can it be controlled through a cable company universal remote or do you have to use it's remote control?

Well I don't think so. I honestly haven't tried that. But if you leave it on standby, once you turn off the TV it'll turn off by itself. And when you turn on your TV and start playing media it will turn on by itself. Hope that helps.

No. It's not battery powered.
