There's good ones out there and there's way more bad ones... I'm a Christian and I don't watch many of those movies because they aren't done well a lot of the time, but I mean VeggieTales I grew up with so you can't help but enjoy it same as looking back on other kids shows XD

Prince of Egypt wasn't Christian. All the main heads at DreamWorks that wanted the movie done were Jewish. Regardless of its religious theme, it was and is a great movie.
Despite not being a very religious person, I watched a lot of VeggieTales as a kid and was surprised at how clever the writing and humor was. Some of the movies are especially fantastic. They can definitely be preachy, but when they're good, they're REALLY friggin' good.

I consider this franchise as a whole to be one of the world's biggest guilty pleasures. I don't see it becoming as big as Disney, or anything (though since they apparently work with Dreamworks now, that's debatable), but it's not without its good quality. The humor's surprisingly good, the writing, while preachy, DOES have its heart in the right place, and if it helps, while THIS movie's moral's driven more into the ground than a crashing fighter jet, their second foray into film known as The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything not only took to God aspect out of it (for the most part; after all, it still comes with the territory) and the moral was surprisingly subtle.

Andrew Asaro Really? Honestly while I understand the dislike, I think Pirates is the better film for a few reasons, the most prominent being:
1. They play the God angle much more subtly than any other VeggieTales production (though the symbolism is to an extent there, being still a VeggieTales production), making it seem a lot less preachy than most other productions. And yes, yes, I know it's a Christian franchise, but as AniMat himself put it, sometimes they REALLY push the preaching angle too far. And it's refreshing to have it be NOT the main focus for a change.
2. While true it's not a traditional musical, it is technically a musical with a few numbers, just not enough to make it a traditional one; including "Yo Ho Heroes" (my personal favorite of the bunch), "Jolly Joe's" and "Rock Monster". And the fact that it's not a straight up musical also makes it one of a kind, as this kind of VeggieTales production is comparatively rare.
3. Much like with most VeggieTales productions, its humor is unique in its execution. One could argue it relies a bit too much on pop culture, with numerous references to the Weather Channel and even Edward Scissorhands, but I'd say in response that they've always done references like that.
4. The villain, while cliched compared to other villains out there, is unique for a Big Idea baddie. And honestly as evil as he is, he does raise some good points in terms of his motivation. Yeah, he wants to steal the throne Mufasa-style, but we don't really get much of an explanation of the country's economy, aside from that apparently the king's a big spender in terms of others. Which normally is noble, but Robert does raise a good point in that since it's technically the ROYAL finances, he's practically throwing money away that could easily improve the country overall. But maybe I'm overthinking it a bit.
5. The moral is surprisingly good as well. Maybe it's because it's not nearly as preachy as other productions, but this kind of a moral, while again, cliched in other media, is unique for Big Idea's works. May I remind you that this series usually cites the Man Upstairs for most of the morals?
Now do keep in mind that this is simply MY opinion on the matter. If you still dislike it, fine. Your opinion, your entitled to it. But do remember this should you be curious enough to look upon it again.
Also, I'm with you on the character designs nowadays, they look like they just came from the optometrist with how big their eyes have gotten in comparison to their bodies!

Lately, I've been working on the fourth installment of this. Oh, and in case you're wondering, I'm agnostic, and while I respect Christianity, I prefer to look at these episodes on their own merits rather than by their sometimes preachy Christian messages. And yes, yes, I know it's a Christian series, but sometimes they *really* hammer that part home a bit too much for their own good.
I grew up with Veggietales. I'll show it to my kids too. Glad you got around to reviewing a part of it.
With a critical eye, yes, this franchise is seriously lacking, but I find that despite all its faults, the franchise is extremely clever. It takes Bible stories or the stories of other franchises, and parodies it. Lord of The Beans, Moe's Big Exit, and It's a Meaningful Life all parody other franchises, but put in biblical morals. That's the life blood of the franchise.
I have a serious bias though because Veggietales was basically my life in my childhood. I will always love the series despite its faults.
The other Veggietales film, The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything, is much better in my opinion. The animation is better and the characters are more fleshed out. If possible, you should review that one too.
Still, a guilty pleasure, haha.

Darkmatter2525 does a better job a parodying the bible using cartoon characters. Mostly because he doesn't glorify any stories.
+Willie Wonker "Glorify any stories"? The reason Veggietales "glorifies" them is because to Christians, stories from the Bible are cherished. And I've seen some of his content. He is obviously not a Christian or is one with a very negative view of Christians. Most of his "parodies" are crude and encourage hate towards the religion. He doesn't "glorify" the stories because he doesn't believe that they are real probably.

Let me guess, you've only seen, 2, 3 of his videos. He doesn't glorify the stories, because what he's presenting basically happened. Certainly more realistic than this vegetable garbage. But I guess using your brain to question and criticize certain aspects of a story from thousands of years ago isn't your type of thing. And to assume that he dislikes Christians, despite the fact that he's said several times before that he's mostly joking and doesn't hate Christians, just makes me think of you as someone who is ignorant.
Willie Wonker You are using fallacies and filling your mind with assumptions. I have seen at least 10 of his videos. All of them have a very similar feel to them, even the ones that released very closely to the time I saw them.
This "vegetable garbage" is a kids show. A KIDS SHOW. It is not meant to be realistic. True Biblical stories are gory, bloody, adult, and dark. Veggietales, instead of performing the exact same story as the Bible, puts its own spin on it by taking creative aspects from the creator's heads or from separate properties. Also, a lot of the stories are not even Biblical, just "Christian-ized" versions of different properties, like, as I said, Lord of The Beans, and Sheerluck Holmes.
I do criticize the Bible. It's not perfect. I was told as a kid that the Bible is 100% truth and shouldn't be questioned. I see now that is BS. Most of the Old and New Testaments completely contradict each other. Each prophet inputs their own opinions on God. Leviticus and Deuteronomy both are completely outdated in their teachings. Apparently, I have sinned by eating mussels and planting different crops in the same field. According to those books, I should repent.
Most of the Old Testament is stories and interpreted views of real events. The reason Genesis is so strange is because it used metaphors to explain real events. The slavery of the Hebrews and David's reign were completely different in history. Even Babylon has inconsistencies. The people that wrote the Bible were human, and Christians always forget that.
How am I, a person that doesn't know DarkMatter's channel well, supposed to know that he thinks that way? That's assuming that everyone is all-knowing. His videos are not funny to me, but they might be funny to you. Satire can only go so far, and those videos really push the offensive cover over the stories which could EASILY connotate hatefulness. I guess I misinterpreted his videos, but do not tell me that I was stupid for doing so, as his videos do give off a less than positive vibe.

Also, that "cheap animation" is their art style. It's like criticizing _How It Should Have Ended_ for the way they draw their characters.
He does make a fair point that some films like Shrek and Ice Age that came out around the time A VeggieTales Movie came out do look better than this film, but not really by a large margin. However, he doesn't even mention the Jimmy Neutron movie. The VeggieTales Movie looks far better than that, and they were both released around the same time.

@@macbarrpup2451 it's probably because of the realistic textures of the world. After this movie, the backgrounds and textures were simplified and made to look more cartoony, which complimented the characters' designs and styles.

The creator of VeggieTales, Phil Vicher, said he wanted to make this movie for anyone, not just christians (same thing with the show). You should have watched just a little bit of the show to see that its not that bad. The humor is smart, the characters are memorable, the songs are great and its a overall good show! I know VeggieTales is not for everyone, but you should give it a second chance. (no pun intended) The 1993-2004 era is pretty good and a new show is coming this month.

How to make an entire fanbase as angry as VeggieTales in the House did.
It would probably have been best to see the show first before judging the movie. The animation sticks true to the show and it keeps the same spirit.
I mean, I'm not very religious, but you shouldn't bash on Christian stuff if you aren't a part of the religion and didn't grow up with it.
Here's the Thing: even if someone like Mat Never Watched the Show, a movie Needs to watched on its own right and represent the show as a whole! I think your bias is causing you to be unnecessarily harsh on this movie. Try reviewing it in the context of the series, not in the context of big names like Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks. You're being unfair.
Though I will grant you that if you don't know the characters from their previous appearances in the series proper, they are going to seem two-dimensional. They are presented more as established actors in established roles, rather than being introduced to an audience unfamiliar with them. We know who Junior, Bob, Larry and Archibald are, and we see them more as cast in the roles of equally familiar Bible characters than as their own unique characters whom we have to meet all over again in this film. But a lot of films based on cartoon series present their characters the same way. If you're not familiar with the franchise, you're probably going to miss a lot of characterization if you go straight into viewing the movie. The only real exceptions are characters introduced in said movie, such as Khalil. He does get a proper introduction and some characterization (especially as a fanboy with a tendency toward deadpan snarkery), but he's pretty much the only one because the filmmakers assume that the majority of their audience is already familiar with all of the other characters.

My point was that you need the series proper to understand the characters themselves (Jonah excepted), or they might otherwise seem flat. The same is true of any TV show that does a movie. Yet I don't see you complaining about Star Trek.

Ironically, I think YOU'RE being a tad harsh on Animat. Keep in mind that Animat had little or no idea what Veggie-Tales was prior to this review. Understandable since, let's be honest, they aren't known for being big showstoppers like DreamWorks or Pixar.
On the other hand, you do make a good point here; part of the fun factor comes from past experiences with the characters. And to be fair, they have the characterization down to a T in this film, as well as their other film, The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything.
Bottom line: I get what you're saying, Derek, but I also see why Animat doesn't see this to be as good as you or I; and before you say anything, note: 1. I actually kinda like the film (I was a hardcore Veggie-nut back in my younger years), and 2. I also see the problems with the film and address them as such.
It's kinda like with the Spongebob Movies; if you liked Spongebob to begin with, you'll see them as great love-letters to the insanity they can offer. If not, you may like them fine, but you won't have as much of a connection to it as others.

John Mikkiah Thompson as a Christian, I have to disagree with you strongly about God's Not Dead. Its stupid. It's insanely cheesy. The acting (aside from Kevin Sorbo and Shane Harper in the first movie) is really, really bad. It has like 10 different stories, none of which you really connect with. But here's my biggest problem with it. Ok, so first off, the movie is called God's Not Dead. Clearly it has no interest in reaching beyond Christians. That's ok though, seeing how the message is that you shouldn't fear standing up for your faith. Great, that's a great message for Christians. The problem is that it makes every non-Christian in the movie a freaking caricature. From the philosophy professor that won't allow a debate on religion (I'm sorry, what? What philosophy professor shuts down debate on anything?) and clearly "hates God," to the evil Dean Cain character who is the meanest person possible, to the ultra-liberal journalist, it presents Christians with this view that atheists are just these extreme, evil people who all have a vendetta against God, and terrible arguments to back themselves up. It presents Christians with an unrealistic view of the world and what standing up for your faith looks like. If a Christian watches this movie, and takes it to heart, then when their faith is tested, they'll be totally unprepared.
If you wanna see a movie that communicates that exact same message in a much more powerful way? Hacksaw Ridge. If you haven't seen it, go check it out. It's a true story about a WWII medic named Desmond Doss who was a 7th Day Adventist. As a 7th Day Adventist, he believed that killing, even in war, was wrong. He was so committed to his morals that he wouldn't even touch a gun. I'm not gonna tell you what else happens, because if you do watch it, I don't wanna spoil it for you. Here's what I will say though. The point of the movie is not what Doss believes, it's how strongly he believes it, and how willing he is to stand up for those principles no matter what anyone says. It is incredibly inspirational. It's directed by Mel Gibson, who, if you forget, made Passion of the Christ. It's an amazing movie, go watch it.
As a Christian, I 100% agree with u! This Jonah is great representation of what the real Jonah was in the Bible. I was intrigued to read the story after watching this movie. There's a bible cartoon series called Greatest Heroes and Legends from the Bible and they portray Jonah as a character who is more a tragic character. Not bad, but Veggietales fleshes Jonah out, imo
This was one of thy core movies of my childhood. I love it. :-) Criticize me for being Christian, I don't care, but VeggieTales is my childhood.

I'm glad this film is something you can remember fondly, but the first time I ever heard of these creepy, talking produce characters was in the trailer for that pirate movie thing...and I didn't know about the religious aspect of them until much later. For me, it was all Bill Nye, Reading Rainbow, and Magic School Bus XP I am actually surprised, since I was raised Christian, and my parents had me watch 7th Heaven with them from time to time...XD I will admit, looking back, I'm a bit thankful they didn't. I wasn't kidding when I said those things creep me out(but then...bad animation does tend to bother me...And I'm not sure if I'd call it the "uncanny valley" or not XD)

You only say that the characters are not memorable and have no personality because you haven't seen any episodes of VeggieTales. If you watch some of the episodes you'll find that the characters are actually really funny and memorable.
Some Examples: The main duo: Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber. Bob is like the straight man and kind of a control freak, but he's also very nice. While Larry is the goofy, wacky, silly sidekick, and also very nice. Then there's Junior Asparagus (my favorite character) Who is a very kind-hearted, well-relatable 5-year old kid. Archibald Asparagus is the stuffy, up-tight brittish man. Jimmy and Jerry Gourd, who are like gourd versions of Twiddledee and Twiddledum, who love to eat and sing. Pa Grape, who's like an odd, wise man, but still kind of a nut. Mr. Lunt, who's really funny. Mr. Nezzer who's not really a bad man, he just gets confused/overboard sometimes and the french peas, Jean Claude and Phillipe, who are just hillarious, and they're cute too.
Yeah. As the series goes on, certain episodes won't even focus to much on God, but rather just good messages like, "don't let temptation control you", "use your gift for good", "be willing to forgive and forget", "don't lie or spread rumors", and my favorite one, "no matter who you are, you are capable of doing great things and overcoming your short comings."
You can sorta blame Big Idea Productions for not doing a good enough job at having this movie work as both a cinematic version of "Veggietales", as well as being a stand alone movie. Though even as a Veggietales movie, it feels a bit off. Like maybe its just me, but I wish this movie had opened with the iconic countertop scene, where Bob and Larry had gotten a letter from a kid about a problem they are having, and THEN they tell the story of Jonah. At least then it would feel more like an adaptation of "Veggietales". Even then, another reason why this movie bombed, is cause "Veggietales" may have been a popular franchise, but its audience was still very nieche. "Veggietales" didn't have the same general appeal of something like "Spongebob Squarepants" or "Spiderman" or anything like that, so there wasn't enough hype to justify this movies theatrical release.

@@supermariof0521 another reason was because it went really overbudget due to difficulty with the company (it was also too early imo to make one). The movie made around 25 million dollars out of a 15 million dollar budget so it could work later on but not then
Preachy? Of course.
Clever? To an extent.
Fun? For the most part.
The problem with this movie is that it's not actually "A Veggietales Movie", it's a regular Veggietales episode spread very, VERY thinnly over a movie-length running time. Hence the constant reminders about the moral, hence the TV quality animation, hence that stupid modern-day framing device (although to be fair that also exists because the ending to the story of Jonah isn't very climactic or satisfying, they even lampshade this), hence the characters being borrowed from the show but not really developed because the assumption is that they're just going to act like they do in the show.
And before you go berserk on me, I'm a 17-year-old who adores Veggietales and think this movie is perfectly serviceable structural issues aside. Animat probably should have watched the much punchier, compact show instead of the drawn-out, shallow movie.

I thought this movie's animation was really good. Honestly, I think it looks better than Toy Story.
Just for those who don't know, there is a reason why the characters are vegetables. It goes back to the franchise's first video, which was released in 1993. Notice the date? This was before Pixar had released Toy Story. So as you may have already guess, there was a lot of technical limitations back then. So the creators of VeggieTales decided to make the characters vegetables, so that they didn't have to worry about animating hands or legs and such. Also they make a lot of references in the other movies about the fact that these characters don't have any limbs, like in their main theme song, Larry says he can't play the guitar because he doesn't have any hands! Yeah, VeggieTales is little corny, but I like corn! ;)
If he gave this movie a 5/10, then he would probably destroy "The Pirates who don't do anything: A Veggietales Movie"
He'd probably still give a very like mixed reaction to the animation and the pirates of don't do anything

"the animation is cheap" ...idk man, it looks really well polished to me, and honestly, their studio at the time was literally in a shopping mall. this is their first feature film. like... i guess i have a bias since i grew up with this movie and i've always loved it, but it was made by people who really cared about it and were really proud of the feats they made. they were definitely not lazy, and worked hard considering the budget. and personally, i love the jokes more as an adult than i did as a kid, and if you get the dvd (which i kinda doubt you will but whatever) you can see that they have "audio commentaries" and one is purely improvised comedy where two of the veggie characters are said to be the "producers" of the movie and like, the humor is a lot less watered down than the movie does for the younger kids. these guys are very mature, very capable, and care very deeply about what they do, which is why they're deliberately making a movie targeted at a younger audience (who might need the message of the movie to be preachy since they're, you know, children, and it's harder to pick up on subtly). mostly it's budget and the fact that they're a niche company that keeps them from pixar level animation. most if not all the cast are creators for the series/movie and i think they do a phenomenal job tackling all those aspects.

I actually think this movie has one of the best uses of a framing device I've seen. Having a different character learn from Jonah's failings gives the movie a better arc than if they'd just ended it where Jonah's story does.

Mr Critical I don't think that would be a hate crime, it would just be a poor way of expressing one's views. Here's the difference between the two. You could spray paint a watch tower with the words "I hate n*****s," and while that is a reprehensible and disgusting thing to say, freedom of speech says you are allowed to say that. It is hateful, but not a crime. Now, if you were to burn someone's property just because they were black, that would be a hate crime. Because it's a crime that is motivated by hatred (or prejudice). A la, hate crime.

You know I'm getting sick of people saying Toy Story hasn't aged. Hehehe, no. Toy Story even if you say that they're supposed to look stiff is NOT an amazingly animated movie. I MEAN I DON'T HOLD IT AGAINST PIXAR IT'S NOT THEIR FAULT, IT WAS JUST THEIR FIST FILM! but sheesh people need to realize that Toy Story should be praised in design, writing, and acting, NOT it's animation. It was REVOLUTIONARY sure, but Pixar didn't truly become an amazing studio animation-wise at the least until Toy Story 2.
Lol nono I never said that, I WAS GOING TO SAY A BUGS LIFE, but its been a while since I saw it so I can't remember if it was as stiff expression-wise as Toy Story 1. Both are two of my fav Pixar movies though! Hopper is an underrated villain, 10/10.

i still love Veggietales and im a teen. Veggietales is my childhood. Archibald is my favorite character in the series. Veggietales is one of my favorite shows.
I can say the same to myself. Archibald is a pretty funny character and Larry is too. Junior is my favorite character in the show. I like his wholesomeness.
7:29 Actually, in the other characters's defense, most of their charm comes from their works in the TV show prior to the film. Which is probably why some people who grew up with the series like it more than you (like me for instance). Now that isn't to say that you're wrong; as the series IS known for being mostly kid-pandering and being blatantly preachy as well, but there's a certain charm to it that can't be ignored (though again, part of it comes from growing up with the series). Personally, I still kind of like the film, but I can see why it's looked down upon by others.
I like Veggie Tales. The animation quality was always a recurring problem, but I thought the writing and music were enough to keep them enjoyable. So I ended up watching quite a number of these things.

I honestly didn't know what VeggieTales was until I saw this movie when it came out. This film helped introduce me to VeggieTales. Being a young girl who went to Sunday School each week, I appreciated the movie for staying true to the story of Jonah, as well as the fun bits they added in. Now that I'm much older, I still appreciate what the film does. Yeah, it's cheesy, but it has heart. These days, not many kids movies have that. I may be too old to really get into VeggieTales, but at least they have a genuine, fun way to teach kids stories with good morals.
The next one is "Surf's Up". I love that movie, it's so UNDERRATED :)

AniMat, tbh the characters aren't forgettable. OK, it makes more sense if you've seen more of the series, but here's what I mean. I haven't watched anything from VeggieTales in 10 years, and I still remember all these characters, or at least their non-Biblical parts. Larry's an optimistic goofball, Bob is a compassionate voice of reason, Archibald (aka Jonah) is a rationalist, heck he reminds me a lot of Squidward, and anymore would be overkill.
WITH THAT SAID, That's me just knowing the VeggieTales as I remember them. They might not be as fully portrayed in the film. And it's up to the viewers if they want to see the show, but by Christian kid standards, it's harmless. Yes it's preachy, but again, what can you expect from this genre. At least it's funny and has some memorable songs.
I've loved, and will still love VeggieTales as a youngin, and this movie is no exception. I'm 16 now and I still watch this.

I mean maybe I get not being familiar with them, but like don’t get all upset that the movie isn’t exactly what you want it to be. “Ugh why is Star Wars about a human boy. I thought there would be more stars. Why can’t a star be the main character?” That is not a valid criticism. Just because a movie isn’t what you thought it was based on the title, doesn’t mean it’s inherently bad.

Um...I'm in my 30's and...well...I love Veggie Tales! I thing you're a bit biased against the religious nature of the film, which keeps you from examining the movie on it's own merits. It is a kid's movie after all. I'm not saying the movie was great but it was better than this review implies. And you gotta give it credit for being one of the only animated Christian films to appear on the big screen and being an early CGI animated movie that wasn't made by Disney/Pixar. The only others at the time were Nickelodeon's Jimmy Neutron and Blue Sky's Ice Age. In all sincerity I think Jonah's animation was as good as either of those and dare I say a little better than the first Toy Story. The Veggie Tales franchise was also one of the earliest to be completely in CGI. Although I like the characters, I could see how someone might not find them very interesting because it seemed like they relied on familiarity with the series. But so did Jimmy Neutron. It also gets points for avoiding other animated movie cliches such as romantic elements. It's also of the few animated features which does not have humans. It is the ONLY animated feature to star vegetables...so...that's unique and challenging. Right? Anyone? I give it a "worthy effort." And it was a bit preachy, I guess.

Dear Animat, I personally grew up in a Christian home and Veggietales was the weirdest but best way to provide the telling of bible stories to a young crowd. It was the most legit thing to watch as a kid, and if you didn't know Veggietales you had no life. I can honestly say I freaking hate the reboot to the series I loved as a kid.
Unlike Animat, I HAVE seen multiple Veggie Tales projects in my childhood. Although I don't have precious memories of it as I do with Thomas the Tank Engine and the Land Before Time sequels, I will admit there were times when I liked the projects. I especially liked Junior, feeling I could always identify with him. Today, I am a little bothered by the voice cast; not only did Junior turn out to be voiced by an adult female and not an actual child, but it turns out there are NO PROFESSIONAL ACTORS in the voice cast! No Kath Soucie, no Tom Kenny, no Corey Burton, no Peter Cullen, no Tress MacNeille, all of the voices were done by unknown people, especially the two creators Phil Vischner and Mike Naworki. In fact, I think that's why the animation is so cheap in this movie. According to some trivia I found, the creators weren't even properly trained in animation. They couldn't make professional animation because they barely even knew what they were doing! Now since I like cheap CGI better than what Pixar and DreamWorks do, I can forgive the animation for looking amateurish, but it does hurt me to know that the creators could not get the proper training they needed. I would not watch this movie over and over again, but I will say it works as a Veggie Tales project.

@7:20 Context for the original story: Nineveh was the ancient capital of Assyria, which was one of the nations which Israel was often at war with. They'd eventually conquer Israel, tho Israel may have had some sort of trade relationship with them at the time Jonah was set. (Timeline's a bit hard for me to figure out; BC being backwards & all.) Jonah was either mad at them for conquering his people, or for leading them away from God. Either way, he was reacting to the destruction of his culture. As such, his behavior might not have been right, but it may be understandable.

I actually vaguely remember being forced to watch this in school. It was, dull to say the least, I remember all the students starring at the wall for 99% of the film.
I suppose. The entire class was no uninterested in Veggie Tales they either looked out the window at the parking lot, looked at the greyish wall, or just day dreamed. It was over rather quickly.

I'd probably have some trouble forgiving the people that literally murdered my family, especially considering it was also common for the people of Nineveh to skin their victims alive before killing them. If u didn't know, the veggies in Jonah (the actual story) are played by veggies from the show. The pirates are played by Larry, pa grape and Mr. Lunt. Jonah is played by Archibald. Bob, junior, Laura and the others play as themselves.

I'll agree with you, it's not all that good, but the heart it is in the right place, and that's why I like it. But personally, I've never seen this movie! But I still enjoy Veggitales.
