He didn't try taking his own life because of his friends decision, he's lived through a lot of excruciating pain and pushed on because he didn't want to put anyone through the pain he felt when he wasn't able to save his close friend. He went through more pain and misery from his illnesses than most people ever will but fought through it all. He got a call that Joe was on a bridge and raced to get there but was too late to save him. He's done everything to keep his memory alive, including titling his first album after him "Freckled Angels". Please do more reactions to him, he's a very talented and meaningful artist that deserves all the recognition he gets

And didn’t another mate open a restaurant on/or near the bridge called Freckled Angels? I freaking love that this song is starting 100’s if not 1000’s of conversations about this ‘taboo’ subject. This subject needs to come off the taboo list. There are still too many dying this way. It’s a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Easier said when you’re not in the thick of it. My son was 12 when his dad killed himself. It’s 19 yrs and there’s still stuff we haven’t dealt with. Thank you Ren. Your name is stitched to our lips.

Yeah, just bump this comment, cause I wanted to state the same. Ren spoke, and still speaks very openly about all that happend. "How to be me" is actually filmed on the bridge Joe jumped from so far I know. His death, broke and saved Ren at the same time. He said he wanted to die when his illness was at it's worst, but knowing what pain it caused him, loosing his best friend let him push though because he didn't want to cause this pain for anyone around him. It seems true what they say: "The prettiest flowers grow on fields covered in shit."

Since I first heard this song, the similarities between the song and people with suicidal tendencies is revealing.
The first part is upbeat, yet ren is delivering a serious message, much the same as a suicidal person, in the days, weeks leading up to the event they will appear upbeat, yet he is portraying his own struggles with the thoughts and there was a never a right time for him to do it, and we as viewers are very glad he didn’t, despite his inner demons. The second part is the reality of what suicide means to everyone involved, and the outcome it has on everyone else surrounded by it.

  • @Aurora-cv5to
    @Aurora-cv5to Pƙed rokem +22

I think you got it twisted. The whole thing is there in plain words on Ren's channel, in his community posts. His urge to commit suicide was linked to his pain and suffering: his reaction to Joe Hughes' jumping is separate. In producing this song he showed the urge and pushed for restraint, and the last section on his response to Joe is a cautionary tale about the pain you will cause if you do it. It's a double sided call to resist suiciding out.

Ren when he announced this video made a post that tells the story of the end of this song where his friend Joe committed suicide. Before he had heard from other friends that Joe was on the phone so had not jumped yet and Ren ran while constantly phoning him to try and stop him but found the phone went from busy to a dead line while he was running there so he was maybe about 5 minutes late from his friend jumping and the song discusses how not only did he lose a close friend he lost a lot more with other friends and fond memories of his childhood because they remind him of Joe and how he regrets not being faster. Overall this is important to open conversations on suicide and how the act while limits how much your life can get worse it also prevents any progression or improvement that may make life easier or better

As said, That poetry at the end Is dedicated to one of his best mates Joe. Joe was going to jump off the the Menai Straits Bridge, It's the bridge that separates, Wales from Anglesey.. Ren ran as fast as he could. He was minutes late. They never found the body. Hence, the last part was raw and very real. The song "Freckled Angels" is about Joe, The Album "Freckled Angels" is Dedicated to Joe. Ren, in the interview, he did with Knox Hill, Ren goes into great detail of what happened leading up to it and after, Joe Jumped. That part starts from 37mins 15secs into the interview, Ren said he had the same thought, before and after he lost his mate. this happened. But It was seeing how Joe's family Suffered , Ren said, no matter how bad I get, I will never do that. and put his mother through that kind of suffering. BTW YT knows about the song and the subject, that's why there's a Warning, and links to helplines. before you decide to watch it

  • @blackberrystag

I feel like the addition of the Sick Boi line "I feel like it's not me, it's the world that's sick" turns the subject from himself to everyone else. The AI art does so as well, with all the faces constantly changing to show that it can happen to anyone.
Also, something that never really gets mentioned, but thoughts do not always equal actions. I've known people who have labored with depression all their lives (myself included) who have never made an attempt. I think that gets expressed in the line "It never really felt like the right time." We find ways to cope with those thoughts. Acceptance is a powerful thing, just taking the thought in your hand, gently, looking at it, and letting it drift away. As he says in "Hi Ren", "it's not a battle to be won. It's a dance."
My favorite image is when it starts zooming in traintracks, with a train kinda disappearing, and you see some little people crossing the street, and then the moon appears in the street and you're actually staring at a crack of sky amidst city skyscrapers. Gorgeous.

To those that are suffering in silence I say this, Someone out there somewhere love's you, you are their world, They may not show it some times but you have made an impact on the world around you by existing, Don't turn out that light even in the hardest of times, It will get easier, I promise you this.

Yeah its horrible for those on the reservations. Spend their time drunk and high. Best way to end that in Canada is to end the Indian act which would end the reservations completely. The US destroyed them, and there they do just fine (except those on reservations - first clue to end the reservations).

Ren has been suicidal in the past but in his stream today he said he is no longer. He’s been at his worst and pushed through it and he wanted his fans to know.
With that said you need to know this story is about his best friend Joe Hughes who jumped off a bridge. His body was never found.
Ren lived about 10min away and was called by his friend when they heard Joe was on the bridge. He sprinted there desperately trying to get his friend to answer the phone. 5min out the line went dead. Hence the line about being 5 min faster.
He wrote the song Freckled Angels as a tribute to Joe which was performed for Joe’s friends and family.
If you do listen to the song (and you absolutely should), you should listen to both the studio version and live version.

The word suicide is treated as a taboo, especially here on CZcams as you said, but how can we have an open and productive conversation about it if we are scared to say the word? How can we help reach out to those in need if we get punished for even saying the word?! Other than being a powerful and moving song, I think the true power of the song has already started: People are talking about suicide and how it has affected their lives.
All of these reactions have comment sections full of people talking about the topic, and people finding support from others that have been through either suicidal thoughts or losing someone from suicide. This is about Joe who was Ren's friend he jumped from a bridge they never found his body Ren tried to reach him he lived 10 minutes from where he jumped. This song wasn't to be about Joe but after his interview with Knox Hill Ren finished this song. If CZcams takes it down there will be one serious backlash that makes the CNN misrepresenting Ren look like a drop in a ocean. On the brighter side of things Rolling Stone Magazine interviewed Ren and published the article on Friday including linking this song and Hi Ren.

First of all I love this song and the video on so many levels. For me the first part of the video looks at all the reasons someone might be feeling when contemplating suicide. The gray and blurry background, the disjointed and disturbing images of REN. It all works to create a feeling of being alone in a very bleak and harsh vision of the self and the world
.it feels disconnected and hopeless. The words he raps are all pain and anguish and yet despite all of this he knows that there may only be darkness and nothingness when you fall through the cracks to the other side
.so it’s never the right time for suicide.
In the second part of the video the background is much lighter but the face and words REN speaks are all about the hurt and guilt suicide creates for those who are left behind. Not only dose he miss his friend but he also misses the part of his life and himself that died with his brother.
The take away message for me; no matter how painful and hard life is their is always the possibility for things to get better
.life is fragile but as long as there is life their is hope. If your are having suicidal thoughts hold on, reach out for help and support. As a nurse and as someone dealing with depression I know that the mental health sector needs reform. We need to get away from the almost total reliance on pharmaceuticals. More holistic ways of helping people are desperately needed. Suicide, we don’t like to think about it or talk about it. In todays world we are told we cannot even use the word anymore, as if that helps
this is absurd! If we can’t discuss it we cannot help ourselves or anyone else.
REN we are so glad you learned how to dance with your demons. You are so courageous and a much needed voice for our times. We love you for opening up your heart and your mind to us. Big ups to you for sharing your genius, your creativity and musical artistry you’re such a breath of fresh air. We love you for choosing life âœŒđŸŒđŸ«¶đŸŒđŸ™đŸœ

Social media and news outlets can try to stop him, but they can’t. As an independent artist Hi Ren hit 1 mil views in a few months. Suicide is already at a half mil in less than 48 hours. We NEED an artist like Ren. Speaking from experience, not talking about sensitive matters is more harmful than helpful. I needed this raw artistry growing up because all I wanted was someone who understood. Unfortunately, everything was brushed under the rug in the 80s and 90s.

Ive been going thru some horrible hard things in my life for the last yr or more and no end in sight. Things could most likely get worse. Ive wrestled with ending it all to avoid worse things and consequences for my life. My Ren journey has brought me back and gave me hope. Everything happens for a reason and my exposure to Ren and his meaningful insight, lyrics, and conveyance of emotion thru music couldnt have come at a better time for me. To be honest, main thing that kept me from contemplating sui***e was the effect it would have on loved ones, friends, family, girlfriend was what stuck with me. Life is a gift, it is up to you what you will do with it. Will u let the hardships make you a better stronger person or let it break you? No matter how bad things may seem right now, hold on to hope, cling to positivity no matter how absurb it sounds. Surrounding yourself with loving positive people will drown out the negative voices you tell yourself or that life throws at you. If you are struggling with suicide, reach out for help. That isnt a sign of weakness but of courage and strength. No matter how strong you think you should be or how strong others are, they arent. We all need some help sometimes. Never stop improving on yourself and sharing your struggles, failures, and TRIUMPS with others. Dont take the easy way out, we all have an amazing story to tell, dont end yours prematurely without letting your story develop and play out. I hope this makes someone rethink their current feelings about their life, hang on, no matter what you think, there are people that love you, you do have more worth than you know. If your life story sucks and is depressing right now, its up to you to get help put the work in to change the ending to an inspirational story no matter what the odds may seem right now. Such a powerful meaning related message that can change and touch so many lives and families. God bless Ren and his boldness, insight, and message for all people.

The only thing I can say from my own struggle (for whoever reads this) is that despite the weight of your world, despite the pressure, and despite the feeling that life itself feels like it wants you to commit the act... there is a satisfaction that can be found in surviving. The strength it takes to not commit when it feels like there is no one who wants you or the world doesn't want you, I promise there is a (maybe selfish or weird) satisfaction with fighting against that and THAT is an incredible strength. is like Ren said, it’s never the right time.
The biggest reason more people don’t, is because we are thinking about our families, and our friends.

This song helped me reconfirm the knowledge I have that I would hurt so many if I committed suicide (which is a desire that chases me when I feel like I can’t handle internal pain). At my age, I know that I could ruin the lives of those around me. The people I love most in the world. I think about the ripple effects it would cause. I know that although I’m a walking chemistry experiment with antidepressants and other prescriptions
there’s still pain that I’m tired of trying to treat with drugs. I know I need to delve into dark waters personally and with the help of a professional. My husband feels guilty like it’s his fault. He couldn’t make me “happy” and that was HIS job. I’ve told him my depression and pain has always been there
long before him and it’s not his responsibility to snap me out of it. No one other than me (with help) can. Its often said that suicide is a “permanent solution to a temporary problem!” We do need to find compassion for those who suffer though. So many people firmly believe suicide is a selfish act in the hopes of hurting someone or everyone. Maybe there is disillusioned people who do it for that reason, but for me the desire is to get rid of pain that’s so intense you actually feel like your presence in this life is a burden to yourself and others. It’s like jumping off one of the twin towers on fire to avoid that pain of being burned alive to certain death. I truly believe there are people in this world who are trained and skilled to help us to ease the pain we have to have the humility and courage to seek them out. They’re not our friends and family. It’s interpersonal real work we have to do. Hope I’m not too preachy. It’s what I tell myself because I’m in it right now.

I absolutely can tell you this song isn't encouraging anything, it's speaking truth about suic!de, Ren had the thoughts not because of what his friend did specifically but he had mental health struggles due to his disease being misdiagnosed and how it made him feel the medication being wrong and him not feeling better but feeling worse. I'm not sure Ren makes music for his fans. He makes music for himself to share with his fans and he openly says he uses it as therapy. He's looked at suicide from both side in this video, from one contemplating and from the side of someone who's lost someone close. The video hasn't been killed anywhere, there are warnings. This song is brutally painful, both for people who have contemplated or tried and for those who have lost people. This may be his most openly honest song he's ever written and watching the reactions are hard, but I keep watching them because there's a catharsis that goes along with it.

That second half of the song, especially the part about the ocean and his tear ducts, kinda reminds me of Transatlanticism by Death Cab For Cutie, which is a song about loss as well
The Atlantic was born today, and I'll tell you how
The clouds above opened up and let it out
I was standing on the surface of a perforated sphere
When the water filled every hole
And thousands upon thousands made an ocean
Making islands, where no islands should go (oh no)
Most people were overjoyed, they took to their boats
I thought it less like a lake and more like a moat
The rhythm of my footsteps crossing flatlands to your door
    Have been silenced forevermore
And the distance is quite simply much too far for me to row
It seems farther than ever before (oh no)

Only Ren can touch such sensible topic and NOT get banned/indexed by the social media.
The first part is from the viewpoint of someone considering suicide. Melancholic, but catchy tune... Suicide is one part to stop the pain...but as Ren posted on his community page:
"Suicide does eliminate the possibility that things will get worse, but it also eliminates all possibility that things could ever get better.
I was in a situation that seemed impossible to climb out. I climbed out. I would have never given myself that option if I choose to opt out of living.
Is my life easy now? No, not close, am I glad to be alive? every day. Is life good? Yes. Did I believe life could be good back then? mostly no, but I carried on and gave myself that chance.
I know that the last song may have opened some wounds, and been close to the bone for some people, but for anyone going through difficult times at the moment, give yourself the option to make life better. You deserve that chance
    I love you".
The second part is the viewpoint for those left behind, in this case of Ren missing his best friend Joe and feeling guilty that he arrived too late.
By sharing his vulnerability he opened this path for others and gives comfort induces healing.

If you go to his page, he shared the story of Joe Hughes there a few days ago. Joe doing that made him realise that he did not mean his earlier statements to his mom that he didn't know what he would do if this illness lasted over a year, that he didn't think he could go on forever like that. He's been on the survivor's side and learned he could not hurt the people who love him that way no matter how much pain he was in. Ren also discussed Joe on the Knox Hill Interview, in fact, the second part of the song came about because of that interview.
Ren's named the thing that social media won't. Nobody ever learns from things that are kept under wraps. This song is making people talk about their experiences with suicide, from considering but not attempting it, to attempting but surviving it, or having to live on, as Ren does, after someone they loved did not survive it. Social media companies think they can protect themselves from accusations of liability by blocking and ringfencing the use of the word itself and restricting access to content. Like we used to not talk about that kid who didn't come back to school. But these days, schools provide support and discussion after a student commits suicide. They don't sweep it under the rug and pretend that kid never existed. Social media needs to embrace that. Of course, they won't because that would require having actual humans able to differentiate this use of a word from that use of a word, and algorithms that toss out every use of the word work for free.
If YT removes it, and I doubt they will, or it will stay gone, I bet Ren posts a save and share copy somewhere. It's another one of those taboo subjects that need to be openly discussed to reduce numbers.

Destigmatization of topics like this is essential for prevention. Because if someone is suicidal it can hinder them seeking help if it is so stigmatized and uncomfortable for people to talk about. If you can openly tell someone "I'm suicidal" and they can respond "well lets talk about that and get some help" then you can prevent it. But so many people don't want to talk about it, or they belittle those who do. It's a scary subject for sure, it's scary because it hits home for everybody and being in such a dark place and cloud your vision. It's scary to think there may come a time where you are so deep in depression or pain that you would consider taking your own life, but if you keep that locked inside it only grows into something more chaotic.
Ren is trying to push the fact that suicide is a massive contributor to death in the modern age as well as how something so wide spread can have a very personal impact. Awareness is not complicity, in fact it's the opposite. It's calling out the problem instead of letting it mutate in the dark.
