@jayoungr....Yes, all the Astaire song repertoire seem custom designed to his style of singing in pretty much the same way Garland's song were custom made for her. Astaire never sang anything that was right for him.
Fred Astaire, wonderful dancer , wonderful singer...and wonderful actor too. A real great artist. From another time, when music and movies were fantastic
I was so disappointed when I first saw this movie thinking that there were no famous tunes in it. But at the end along comes Change Partners to redeem it. Irving Berlin at his very best!
@Geoff...Berlin was a brilliant, musical chameleon, with the ability to shift gears to meet the occasion. For example, it's a testimonial to his genius that he was able to pen "Waiting at the end of the road," sung by Daniel Haynes, in the all black "Hallelujah." And the song culturally is a fit even though its author never knew such a social condition personally. Berlin is amazing. Betty Hutton was right. It was a period of GREAT writers.
There are people who wear classic menswear still but they are a minority. The last decade to fully represent menswear was the 50s, after then it started going downhill. Don't get me started on the 80s 'power' suits.
@@carltrotter7622 I always say that if men knew how good they looked in a tux, they'd wear them all the time. Formal wear makes a plain man look handsome. It makes a handsome man look like a "Greek God".
@@joanschilleci7564 that's kind of ironic, I've currently got my White Tie tailcoat in for alterations for the Christmas Dance this year. I completely agree, not just wearing formal eveningwear like Black and White Tie, but just wearing a suit and tie regularly goes a long way too. It hides imperfections and enhances certain features. Well said.
Oh same here! That's the one I was looking for. Although this is perhaps one of the most beautiful Fred & Ginger moments.. really a beautiful song but the following dance sequence is the best in the film! Thank you for sharing this one :)
Irving Berlin was a genius. Such elegant lyrics that seemed to dance with his elegant tunes. Obviously Fred has to get together with Ginger, or there would be no movie, but somehow Luella Gear is looking kind of tempting in this one!
I wrote a fan ficition based on this song after falling in love with it on Harry Connick Jr's Come By Me CD. Absolutely romantic song! If anyone wants to read it, send me a message and I'll send you the link!
Must you dance every dance With the same fortunate man? You have danced with him since the music began, Won't you change partners and dance with me? Must you dance quite so close, With your lips touching his face? Can't you see I'm longing to be in his place? Won't you change partners and dance with me? Ask him to sit this one out, And while you're alone, I'll tell the waiter to tell him He's wanted on the telephone, You've been locked in his arms Ever since heaven-knows-when, Won't you change partners and then, You may never want to change partners again. Ask him to sit this one out, And while you're alone, I'll tell the waiter to tell him He's wanted on the telephone, You've been locked in his arms Ever since heaven-knows-when, Won't you change partners and then, You may never have to change partners again. Someone had posted the "Change Partners" dance to the Pink Panther Theme. I could not believe how well the dance fit the music. I love the dance and the Pink Panther Theme is my ringtone. So I don't know if it was pulled because of the dance or the music. I loved it just the same.
As much a fan as I am of Rogers, I would've preferred this sequence to follow those ballets seen in the "Dancing in the Dark" and "It Only Happens (When I Dance with You) ballets, the former with Cyd Charisse, the latter with Ann Miller. All three melodies are romantic, deserving of a more intimate staging than seen here. "Change Partners" is definitely part and parcel of that musical troika.
Don't we live in a great country where you're free to express, as opposed to repress, your sentiments. After all, what you said to me isn't cause for war, is it? I've been looking at two Japanese prisoners about to be executed for whatever reason. I marvel at the lack of panic in their faces against such impending doom. So isn't our country great?
I think that there must be copyright restrictions on posting some of the great F&G dances on u-tube. "Never Gonna Dance" and "Let's Face the Music and Dance", I know was pulled...and I suspect their great "Change Partners" dance was also.
has anybody got this clip without the Spanish subtitles - just the original movie clip and soundtrack, no subtitles? please post, without delay - thank you!
that's kind of like saying Rembrandt was better than Picasso. Two very different geniuses. Of course, with Fred, the song was just an appetizer. AFTER he sang, he danced with Ginger. And that was what made Astaire so incredible...he could dance, sing, play the drums, play the piano, whistle and act.
Man, it's so hard to pick a favorite song out of their first 9 movies. The list is just incredible!
One of the greatest songs ever written.. So classy.. Great lyrics and melody.. Irving Berlin knew how to write a song..... Genius
THIS WAS JUST MADE FOR FRED.. THE SINGING..
THE DANCING.... IT'S WONDERFUL........
One of the best songs ever.
I love Fred's voice in this song... just perfection.
Lovely song - and Fred's singing -
JUST PERFECT...
Thank you.....
I keep coming back to listen to this. Surely one of FA's smoothest vocals ever, and so intimate in style.
@jayoungr....Yes, all the Astaire song repertoire seem custom designed to his style of singing in pretty much the same way Garland's song were custom made for her. Astaire never sang anything that was right for him.
this has got to be my fav song from the Fred and Ginger movies.
I LOVE FRED SINGING THIS -
Fred is charming and when he sings (or dances) he is irresistible:)
Wonderful in every way....scenes from a bygone era that can never be recreated.
After such a serenade, all resistance breaks down.
FABULOUS - I LOVE FRED!!
Thank you...
What a beautiful song i really love this song !!
Fred Astaire, wonderful dancer , wonderful singer...and wonderful actor too.
A real great artist.

What an elegant era. No one dresses today. We all dress as slobs heading for the Bowery. Sad.
Does the Plaza in Manhattan still require formal dress, necktie, in the lobby?
James Lochard well... I'd say the same if I'd be a guy... but I'm a girl and don't like dresses :(

Such a lovely song and he sings so softly and melodic. :)

Superb elegance.
Brilliant song.
the one and only...Fred
Pure pure class
i love it , Play it time and time again , Shame such a short recording.
Irving Berlin estuvo nominado al Oscar por esta y otra canción en 1939.
so very romantic
That was so sweet!
💖💖
Ginger's partner is Ralph Bellamy -- the sinister Doctor Sapirstein in "Rosemary's Baby" almost 30 years later!
the man (fred astarie0 is cool and a gentleman always.
So romantic. Sigh.
This is so lovely and Fred and Ginger together are wonderful but their dancing would have made it complete.

@@carltrotter7622 You Tube took it down soon after I viewed it.

Well, I think you're a fool,,,
Think what you will. It's a free country.

Me encanta esta película. Para mí es la mejor de Rogers y Astaire, inclusive mejor que Top Hat.
PLEASE GIVE US THE DANCE SCENE
WHICH FOLLOWS THIS........
Thank you !!
¿no puedes cambiar de compañero y bailar conmigo?
))))))))
Fred Astaire would have got beat up tho.
A charming Fred crooning Berlin tune vs eternal loser dullard Ralph Bellamy Who will win?
Did he start singing because he wasn’t allowed to talk? If so that’s genius lol
Sorry but not sorry Frank Sinatra he was better and the original
@LawrenceDavis : franks sinatra and antonio carlos jobim did it better
I agree

Poor partner of Astaire 's personage.
