  • The mines the Council doesn’t know about !
Castle Hill Blackstone near Ipswich is the site of the former Mansion of the local Coal King”, Lewis Thomas.
After watching the CZcams videos of @t-rocks1960 & @jelbuilderfilms, I was inspired to explore the hidden parts of the hill, uncovering some long forgotten coal mine pits and shafts.

Sorry to have to tell you, they are not mine shafts, they are sink holes caused by the burning mines bel0w, this was our playground when we were kids in the fifties and sixties, Back then one could cook a potato in the heat coming out of the holes.

Great stuff Cam, this was amazing! Keep adventuring and keep safe. There's so many mines around Ipswich, I'm amazed more people don't know/ or go exploring in some of the bigger ones. That infamous coal seam really did prosper QLD to grow into what it is.

Thanks. I really enjoy finding these. I wonder how much history has been buried on that hill.

Sister used to live in the 1 mile. When hubby was digging a hole for a fence, struck coal just under the surface. 👍.

Don’t go into them as they’re very unstable

This is another very interesting video.
There’s another one over near the water tank that used to be a part of that house it’s a ventilation shaft.
So it drops into the earth vertically which leads me to think that there must be entry points down the hill further.
Anyway looking forward to seeing more

Thanks. After I checked my maps I think I missed a couple on the hill near the highway to the west. Next time I’m out there I’ll check them out. They may be tunnels.

just be careful with those tunnels @@camcarteradventures they leak gas and one of them is odorless and it is also deadly carbon monoxide from memory. I believe one can get sensors that can detect gas and I have seen other people exploring mines using them. Anyway all the best

The Ipswich Road upgrade was over old mine shafts. These shafts were filled with a flyash slurry to make then safe from collapse.

Couldn’t say for sure whether they are shafts but there has been spon comb going on there for years so there is subsidence. Westphalen #3 isn’t far from there but might not be accessible these days

Mate there's way bigger ones than those there. Being kids exploring found 1 with 14 live wallabies in the bottom this hole was 6m by 6m by 6m deep Hessian bag and a rope got them out its probably still up in the bush there somewhere
