      How long did it take you to earn enough to provide for your living expenses? I'm currently taking crash courses for digital marketing and planning to learn digital art while i'm applying for interships / jobs. I'll also be using social media to hopefully earn as well w/ my passions. I'd like to focus on just one passion, but i'm not sure which is likely to bring me income faster because of my current problems.

    • @AshleighKing
      @AshleighKing  Před rokem +8

      @@gurlypops1806 it took me 6 months. But I got lucky with my situation with social media for it to happen that fast. My advice would be to do both if you can! My other majors in college have only helped me overall with my art career. Especially if you’re relying on making money right away, I would make that a priority until your art can gradually provide enough money.

      @@gurlypops1806 she is being super nice...but if I was your advisor, I would say get good at marketing because it's easier to get an income fast from it, then take your time with art because it's harder to break into the industry, once you get really good at digital art, companies will hire you or freelance. But it's saturated and one has to be really good.

    Most successful artists I know have a marketing degree like you. It says it all really.

      Also the story you tell greatly impacts the way people perceive the art. Your art with your story is more enjoyable than your art in a vacuum, more or less. Obviously the art still needs to be pretty damn good.

Now I'm kind of lost in the weeds. I'm going to focus on graduating and hopefully pick up marketing skills as I go in the next few years. I graduated degree in architecture few months back but suddenly i dont want to do it anymore (as a job). Few months of jobless life made me realize that the part of architecture that i enjoyed in the past was always the artistic and conceptual phase. I still dont know what i am going to do tbh. I want to do art but it is so hard get inspired😭 i want to fast forward this part of my life to the part where i already figured out what i actually want to do

      I think architecture schools can be a terrible way to kill some artists inspiration because you’re learning to draw in a more technical and industrial way, so if you’ve been to architecture I can understand what you feel. I graduated 6 years ago and never worked in this field but today I’m still struggling with thoses « rules of drawing » I learned through architecture. My advice would be - at this time, trying to be a full time artist for only 6 months - try to forget everything you thought you knew about art and explore like you’ve never draw in your life. Look at your art journey as if you were a 10 yo. It heals slowly, i can tell. Hope you’ll find your creativity again 😘

      Life is hard isn't it? Here are the things that helped me as an artist. 1) My wife is also an artist and she is very encouraging. We even paint commission together 2) I'm a Math teacher but found a job as an art teacher in the Philippines. I taught art to grades 1 through 5 for 3 years. Being surrounded by free art materials and having to teach it to kids, I learned how to paint with acrylics, tempera, watercolor, etc. Before this job I mostly drew and created small clay sculptures. 3) Do it for fun. I also wish I could do art full-time and get paid to create it. Most of the time I don't get paid but I still do it because it is fun. It wasn't fun for maybe 2 or 4 years but eventually I became skillful enough that I know 90% of the time I will get good results. 4) Finally, make sure you exercise because I have so many body pains from seating for hours at a time and I could have avoided much suffering if I had an exercise routine. Good luck and remember that art is a treasure, not always a business.

    I started oil painting when I was 60 years old. My first motivation was that I wanted paint Mt. Fuji in the bath room. I initially found Russian artist on CZcams because his oil paint style was somehow impression style which I like Mone,Goho , etc. Sometime I stopped by some oil paint stores in Boston while I was visiting Boston on business. My best friend of German friend truly encourage my art works and thanks to him I continue to paint. I was very much good at painting when I was elementary school. Oh by the way, I found an interesting point. Color recognition difference between Asian and European especially orange and yellow colors. Probably it may come from eye ball color difference. For Asian those color recognizes somehow dark but European more vivid.

    I started painting after nearly 25/28 years. I started to paint to keep my sanity because I lost my parents within 23 days of each other's death. It was traumatic and I needed help and art helped me rediscover myself and manage my emotions. Just make a start dont think is all I have to say. People will always have something to say, art is very personal and very soul searching. If you dont know what to say, pick a brush and it will soon come out.

    An art degree gives one knowledge but it doesn’t give a person raw talent.
    I was born with pencil in my hand, often thought about art school when l was young, but soon realised that talent can’t be taught, only honed.
    It’s encouraging to watch videos like yours, thank you 😊

    • @narayandesigns3291
      @narayandesigns3291 Před rokem +14

      I agree that most art schools aren't worth it.But it has nothing to do with talent. Art is not a talent it's a skill. Talent might play a role in how fast you learn something but it's less than 5% of what makes you an artist. There are professional artists who had no talent, in fact most of the best artists ever learned it through sheer hard work and repetition. Anybody can learn art. People are born with different levels of passion for art but not different levels of skill. Their passion makes them work on it more, gaining more mileage than the average person at a young age. You can learn art at any age . Jonathan Hardesty started learning art at the age of 22 and now he is teaching at Schoolism because of the amount of effort he put into it. Marco Bucci(One of her favourite artists she has mentioned in this video) has a video where he talks about how he became a successful artist even though he had no talent. Marc Brunet and Samdoesarts also talk about it in the videos about 'worst art advices'. Ironically, artists who see themselves as 'talented' instead of hardworking come to a point where they hit a wall. Everything is learned through repetition. You can check out the book 'The Talent Code: Greatness isn't Born it's Grown' by Daniel Coyle. You can be a phenomenal artist even if you have zero talent. All you need is repetition. In terms of learning art, online courses like Proko, Schoolism, New Masters Academy etc and online schools like CGMA, CG Spectrum are the best to learn art. Also youtube tutorials. These are way cheaper options which no generation before us had access to :D

    I had a chance to watch this one again 😊, this time paying closer attention to your water color interpretation of that beautiful building. It was so interesting seeing it take shape from a simple sketch to its beautiful final form. I loved the way the somewhat lose and purposefully inexact window and door frames worked so well in finished piece. I began to see how those strokes were not the product of a rushed or carefree effort, but rather a developed skill necessary for the impressionist style. A style that you seem to enjoy, and one that I am growing more fond of through your influence. Thanks again for putting out such great content.

    This was really interesting! I have a channel sharing my journey as a full time artist, since I quit my job in banking a year ago. I share everything I'm doing and learning along the way, with lots of advice for beginners, and painting tutorials too! You're an inspiration Ashleigh!

    Ashleigh, you are young, talented and most of important thing is you are so in love with art, so keep trying and be happy because there is no answer for art and it is just between the artist, you and people who feel and interpret your art. Have a good day! 😉

    Beautiful video and very informative. You are such a peaceful person and have a wonderful personality. You nailed that painting with those loose strokes and your inspiration of impressionistic art by your mentioned favourite artists comes across beautifully. At first I was doubtful about how it would end but glad to say I was in for an amazing surprise. Looking forward to more. 💜

    Ashleigh, I have been attending fine art classes at the Denver arts league and have had a wonderfully helpful learning experiences. My teacher(Jane Jones-Arvada Co.) an amazing oil painter said she learned very little about making art in ART school. She holds a masters degree in fine art. We had another fellow student who just finished her masters in fine art state she learned nothing about making art in school. She learned more in four intro classes with mrs Jones than all her art classes. I’m working on my art everyday while watcher videos like yours. This so much. Over the years travel abroad and study master artists is so inspiring. My favorite is Van Gogh, Raphael, and the impressionist movement. All the best to you.

    I haven’t watched the other people you mentioned, but I’m going to second the recommendation of Ian Roberts. He breaks things down in a way that I’ve never heard other people frame them, and I find his teaching so simple yet effective. He conveys the foundations so well without overwhelming you as the viewer. Highly recommend his channel for any kind of artist, not just oil painters.

    Hello Ashleigh, there are a number of books available for beginners available in most book shops, also a good place to start researching how to paint in oils, acrylics or watercolours or pastels and sketching etc, can be found in Amazon's book store online.
