I think this is where we get the saying don't shoot until you see the whites of their eyes.. because any farther you'd never kill them. of course it means you are in range of the enemy too.
Which is exactly why revolutionary-era infantry stood in lines to shoot--you were making up for the inaccuracy by essentially creating a giant shotgun. Do that, and sooner or later you'll hit something.
It wouldn't matter if they shoot in lines or one by one, though. Every single gun has a chance to hit, and it doesn't change if you are firing all at the same time or one by one. The reason they used lines was because they wanted to shoot when the target is as close as possible, because they can't reload very fast. So you shoot simultaneously, and then simultaneously go in melee Also they used lines so that they don't get killed by artillery as easily as when they are in a square formation

Just love the cop trying to take in his own practice being aggressive with Castle because he has no clue what he and Beckett are trying to test out... and then finally getting so fete up with what he thinks is Castles bad aim he tried to help him get a steady shot. You are pretty much correct, but the external ignition has nothing to do with how accurate or inaccurate a gun can be, its mostly based on the rifling, with older guns its also based on the ammunition used. FYI there is a muzzle loader hunting season.
Or essentially the non-existent rifling for such weaponry until the manufacturing process had improved sufficiently for rifling and tight bore bullets to become common place 🙂
