Way back in 1968, my history teacher (a Malaysian Chinese) took us third formers through the section on China during its century of humiliation.
He was in tears as he took us through it. I don’t think anyone of us have ever forgotten that lesson. This wasn’t in China but a Malaysian school.
I learnt about China’s century of humiliation at the ruthless hands of western colonial powers when I studied East Asian History at A Level. As an ethnic Chinese, it made me sad, angry and very indignant. That was 46 years ago. Watching China rebuild, progress and rise again in the last 30 years, overtaking those western nations that had once bullied, pillaged and carved China into concessions when she was poor and weak, has been very gratifying.
It's not only humiliation, but the amount of suppression and bullying is absolutely atrotrious. The British not only destroy China, but also many Asian lives in South East Asia. Opium was legal commodity sold by British East India company even in Singapore.
Most Western China experts know little or nothing about China; not thru' the Western view or perspective. If anyone wants to know and understand China, one has to go and live in China, study the language and live the culture for years in order to know its true value. Just the Chinese language is enough for those so-called experts to spend their lifetimes figuring out why, what and how the language was spoken and written in such a peculiar way. Remember this is an ancient civilization continuing into the modern age and with centuries of wisdom as its foundation.
No, they do not have to necessarily go through that grind. Westerners just need to be sincere and honest with themselves and China. It is the insincerity and dishonesty of the westerners that is the cause of the rivalry, animosity and sinophobia that reeks the western countries and the US that is the problem between them.
With due respect, many Westerners are racists toward China and therefore China does not figure in their thoughts or imagination. They tinged their racism with the pretence of knowing China with words like love the Chinese people but hate the Communist Party of China. When pressed what legislation of the CPC they do not like, they are hard pressed to name one as the CPC is an organisation and therefore stand or fall on its legislations or measures.

From the 18th century, Chinese people were treated with contempt and undisguised racism. Daniel Defoe in 1719 published 'The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe' with rather negative attitudes about China, he considered them backward in religion, architecture and that the Chinese were general inferior to the white man in every way. The British lumped Chinese with dogs in their notorious signs forbidding them into parks in Chinese lands well before the new Hong Kong security laws were passed. Chinese outside China were treated as if their lives didn't matter and could be snuffed out at the whim of the European. In 1740, in Batavia (Jakarta), there had grown a sizeable Chinese community, the Chinese were used to help the Dutch farm spices to be shipped to Europe. But conditions were harsh and the pay was poor. When the Chinese complained against the conditions and treatment, and rebelled when there was no improvement, 10,000 were contemptuously massacred. Now, that is one Massacre the west likes to forget. We have to remind people that the Page, and then the Chinese Exclusion Acts of the US, the only laws specifically targeting a single race were enacted not as sanctions in response to communism (because they were passed during the 19th century), but because, in the words of American politicians and media of the day, the Chinese were "weeds" which might rampage over the lovely white American nation. How the west treated China well before the CPC was even founded is history, but unfortunately it is a lacuna in even among educated westerners' narrow mind.

English gunboats still tried to sail up the Yangtze River. The vessel was Amethyst. It was only stopped by
Chinese shore batteries. Some more warship were dispatched but they were also turned back.Churchill was incensed and wanted to send larger ships to " teach the Chinese a lesson ". Think about this.

Professor Kishore is able to understand China and the West because he is an asian, lives in asia, integrate with west in his capacity as an ambassador in UN, educated in Singaporean Society with LKY school of discipline and diplomatic outlook. I have full regards for Professor Kishore in his explanation of diplomatic engagement between the east and the west that is filled with logics, history and cultural understanding of the different thinking.

If the Chinese humiliate the european and american in the 21st century in the same way the Chinese had received centuries ago, then that is equity. That should be the balance. Looking back to history in the last few hundred years, the foundation of most Western powers we seen today was built mainly from the resources of colonialism. Perhaps many would choose to forget but the fact remains true to this very day that they had committed the most brutal crime against humanity. Imagine exploitation and enslavement were their ancestors' building block they have proudly enjoyed but choose to forget the inhumanity their committed.
The humiliation does not only has it roots in the 1st and 2nd opium wars but continued well into the 20th century (e.g. Boxer revolution, theft and destruction of the Summer Palace). The pivotal event that sparked national populsit outrage and rejuvenation that Prof. Mahbubani referred to was the May 4th movement (1919). This event also led to the strengthening of Chinese communism. Knowing the history and language of China is critical to understand China.

I am not sure what has been taught in history class in India nor how much indians have been told of the looting and 400 years of humiliation by the colonialists, but am amazed by the relatively lack lustre renaissance in Indian politics or its nation building exercise. The bureaucrats there remain largely laggy incompetent and resistant to change, other than for personal gains.
To let the Westerners better understand China is easy. Just get the Western media to report on China truthfully.
When you want to learn about a person or group of people, you sincerely engage with him/her or them. But basically westerners tend to look down on non westerners and don't bother to engage with them. So non westerners have to learn to hold their head high and be assertive in dealing with westerners.

Prof. Mahbubani is THE standard of diplomacy. I have so much respect for this man.
Prof.Mahbubani is probably one of the most brilliant thinkers in the Global Sphere. Prof. Martin Jacques is another. The European thinkers must acquaint themselves for their own credibility; with these great Asian thinkers.
The Europeans together with US (including you, tiny Belgium) barged into China's Imperial castle and burnt and loot Yuan Ming Yuan, and then took back the historical treasures and artefacts back to Europe, and proudly displayed them in their museums to Chinese tourists. Japan conducted biological experiments on Chinese during WW2 but USA pardoned the whole 731 Troop of Japan and gave them citizenship. Taiwan was taken by Japan after the war of Jia Wu by Japan but the Allies did not recognise this now. South China Sea Islands all the way back to the Ming Dynasty was taken by Japan and Europeans too. Remember before Qing Dynasty was weakened, no other nations in South East Asia has a maritime expedition fleet apart from China. If the Western powers can recognise Indonesia's expansion in the 60s-70s, why cant they recognise what they took from China was China's back then? This is outright racism to say the least. Perhaps maybe if China was as combative as the Europeans things would've been different, but Chinese wasn't, every European knew this, Chinese don't cause problems wherever they go, they don't demand, they don't incite violence, they just keep quiet and work hard - maybe that's why Chinese was seen as sheeps ready to be slaughtered anytime.
It is great that there is a noticeable drop in the diplomatic tone in the talks of Mr Mahbubani with regards to the current animosity of the US, the west with China. It is quite apparent that the diplomatic language Mr Mahbubani previously used to explain his beliefs as to the reasons for the differences between them failed to get the message across to the US and the west. Time to change strategy and be more assertive in communicating the truths bluntly to his US and western audiences.
Unfortunately the Americans do not listen. Their mentality is one where everyone has a "right" to his own opinion, never mind the Responsibility to investigate and inform himself before forming that opinion.
Professor Kishore Mahbubani is the most insightful man. Please take my respect.

In the past Japan learned from the west to defeat the west, while China was simply defeated by the west .
Savages only believe in wars to settle differences.
Many educational systems got rid of humanities (history, literature etc) and replaced it with activist generated meaningless courses.
The result is:-
1. No knowledge of the past.
2. Crumbling infrastructure in the west BUT they have pedestrian crossings lights reflecting gender diversity.
3. Western students doing courses (arty-farty, everybody passes) in universities which have no value in employment prospects. Then, the same grasshoppers get envious of the ants that slaved away and achieved STEM qualifications.
They were taught entitlements- equal opportunity, yes, it was given regardless and what do they want now? Equal outcomes! The result of pre-school, everyone getting a star mentality.

As an overseas Chinese, I don't really know very much of the historical details of how the Europeans and Japanese took advantage of the weak Chinese then, but i do know enough of the concessions the Chinese were forced to give away, the Opium Wars (and the ceding of Hong Kong to the British), the Marco Polo bridge incident, the destruction and looting of the Yuanmingyuan Palace (Summer Palace), the 'no dogs & Chinese' sign and a few others. The Chinese of my grandfather's and grandmother's generation was humiliated and lived in abject poverty and great turmoil, partly due to internal troubles and greatly magnified by external forces, so much so that many were forced to leave their motherland. My grandfathers and grandmothers were some of them. The Europeans may conveniently forget but not the Chinese!

Not only Chinese in China, overseas Chinese in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, etc remember what Europe did to their motherland also. Europe should also walk on eggshells when dealing with us overseas Chinese.

BC, in the west, schools teach the greatness of their history, in contrast, China teaches how they were humiliated by the west. When u have a good life, u don't aim for a better one, on the other hand, if u have a bad life, well u'll aim to get a better one.
The greatness in their history were wars, massacres and genocides. The biggest genocide in the history of humankind was the massacres of Red Indians in the tens of millions conducted over a century. The biggest thefts in history of mankind were the stealing of the continents of North America and Australia from the original people of the land, by killing them.

Yes, we Chinese read history, learn from history and do things based on history.
i think the west needs to learn how to respect and to be circumspect given what they had done to China. We do see insensitive comments that Chinese should not wallow in history and play victim to incidents 150 years ago. We should be talking about the here and now and the future, those people said. It is this insensitivity and lack of respect of the chinese feelings (driven by history and culture) that is causing the divide and conflict -- maybe intentionally. Thank you Prof Kishore for trying so hard to educate to promote peace

Greatest advantage China has is its people are Chinese (mostly from same race and mostly speak same language).
It's like a large homogeneous group strengthening itself in right direction under a leader (No country has such an advantage in the world. All other nations have fault lines which can be exposed).

One should ask whether the west really wanted to understand China. The business fraternity will want to but politicians will want to mould the world view of the laymen. If you hate China, you will not want to read anything that may change that mindset because most of us are not that objective. We always want to reinforce our own beliefs and not to test it. So professor kishore’s book will likely be read by a small number of people.
