Gone But Not Forgotten, The Homelite 55 Outboard Motor

- Greg collects these somewhat rare outboard 4stroke motors that were 30 years ahead of their time. Based on a tiny English car engine mounted vertically, these motors were always thought to be good ones but cheap gas and quicker power curve made the 2 stroke outboards standard for over 50 years.

I have the 55 hp gold anniversary bearcat Short shaft really appreciate good us made products made to last..
Nice classic boat and correct era outboard too! I was born in the early 60's so I remembered when boats like these were new. i also remembered the Bearcat outboard motor that was the same as this and was powered by a Crosly engine of only 800cc. they were made of such good grade of aluminum that they held up well in the warm corrosive salt water of south Florida.
Not based on an English motor but the US made Crosley from the late 40's. Displacement was increased as well as HP in the Bearcat motor.
In 1967 I bought a 1965 17 ft wooden Thompson Lap-strake boat that had the 55 HP 4 cycle outboard on it. - A heavy engine for it's HP rating, but extremely reliable and easy on gas. - It was great for trolling for yellowtail tuna off LaJolla, CA. - Twice as long as a 2 cycle with same amount of gas and no fumes!!
My Gramps in law in San Diego built his own 16' fiberglass runabout with a 50 hp Homelite. I believe the 1960s. His story was, he went to the Coro. Islands killed the tuna, bad seas coming back, feared running out of gas, so, him and his buddy dared not to check fuel level. (If you check, you'll be out) White knuckle ride all the way back to Shelter Island. When they tied up he said "Brian, I'll bet there wasn't a half a cup of gas in that tank" Him and I enjoyed my 16 footer 40hp in the La Jolla Kelps in the 90's. He loved that Homelite!
first homelite ive ever seen. nice boat
First one I ever seen.!
Interesting...
Thanks for sharing.
Greg is a real nice guy and was a pleasure to interview those years ago but he chose not to run his boats in the river restoration area of Beloit... so I never have seen or heard one run to this day, although personally I've owned several small English cars from that era.
Beautiful snd rare.
Great motors, not easy to find. A vintage Boston Whaler with one gets extra bonus points for style in my mind. There's a great article about them in the reference section on Continuous Wave dot com, which is a Boston Whaler website
Great boat and great work; but why is the fire extinguisher mounted where the fire will likely be? The extinguisher should be placed where the fire ISN'T likely to be and within easy, fast reach of the captain.🤔
Its interesting that Homelite would build a 4 stroke engine for a boat, all I have evern known Homelite to build is 2 stroke engines, Chainsaws, water pumps etc. never knew they made any 4 strokes, heck of a nice looking engine, your resto turned out beautiful!
The engine was made by Crosley.
@@zzzgz5 Dave that isnt the Crosley car company your referring to is it?
@@karlk6860 Yes it is.
Yes
Used to see a lot of them in 65 - 66 in Sarasota

Again, I made and posted the video, but Greg Anderson is the expert. I do not have current contact info for Greg.
@Wdroster
I made the video but am not the expert on these motors. There's several websites devoted to the motors one is mentioned in the credits.
I got one Greg! Located in Ohio between Cleveland and Toledo. Don't know how to put pics on here
Greg was interviewed for our Series. I'm sure he has seen this video but I doubt if he checks back here to view comments very often. This was made quite a few years ago and I haven't spoken to him since then. You can try the Classic Fiberglass Forum on Facebook for a discussion. There's a number of people there who have various versions of these motors.
Thanks for reply! I am disabled and looking to get in contact with someone who has interest. Take care and wish me luck!
Are you hoping to sell one then? Contact me by clicking on the VideoBgood icon then use the Contact Bob button to the right of the banner or the About tab.
I tried to contact without luck. Yes, decided to sell to someone that can appreciate it due to health. I will try the Classic Fiberglass Forum. I may list on Ebay soon. You can find me at tvpartsohio--thanks
Jim, I know several other collectors I can refer you to so that you may not need to list the motor. email me archivalproductions@gmail.com
Nice presentation.. But no run time???.
Greg, like a lot of lake country collectors, prefers small lakes to rivers with sandbars and driftwood. He lives close to the Beloit Show, so we were lucky he displayed his boats and made it home by supper time. I still haven't heard one run.
I see the boat and motor are for sale, wonder how much?
I have the motor you need the boat

do you still have any homelite parts or motors
Just wondering why you disable viewing on some of your videos. Do you realize people would like to complement you? Its like an insult when you disable and why subscribe?
I just corrected that on this video and will change that on as many as possible. I've been posting for decades and found the abusive "comments" were overwhelming for many years. Things are greatly improved now and the CZcams system of reporting abuse is vastly improved. Thanks for your interest.
