  • Join me as I present a livestream overview of a well-known mould called Chaetomium. I'll be covering the health effects and exposure levels, and to begin, I’ll show you what it looks like under the microscope, and in the lab on petri plates, and then I want to present a case study from my files, showing a vigorous Chaetomium mould-contamination within a wall cavity of a water-damaged building.
    This fungus loves cellulose and degrades it even at high temperatures, producing mycotoxins, and well over 500 different bioactive metabolites, some of which show considerable promise in medicine.We'll be talking about its role as a hidden allergen and how it can cause asthma and rhinitis, and as a causative agent in human infections, and in the immunocompromised, as well as its pervasive role in Sick Building Syndrome (SBS).
    I'll be talking about how Chaetomium preferentially affects cellulose based materials like particle board, cement and stone as well as gypsum board, especially those reinforced with composite binders, and even wallpaper. I'll be reviewing typical building materials that are most prone to attack and also those building materials where even after inoculation with Chaetomium, the substrates appear resistant to visible mould growth.I'll then be rounding out this livestream by talking about a few methods to remediate Chaetomium and contaminated building materials, and also reference how ultraviolet germicidal irradiation has been used to protect packing and storing materials in museum collections.I'm then going to finish by discussing acceptable levels of Chaetomium exposure.
    Finally, I want to highlight that it’s not all bad! Chaetomium toxins and the polysaccharide metabolites that strains from this Genus produce are potentially highly useful for us - and indeed, are finding increasing application in medical research for their antibacterial and anti-cancer properties. Think lung cancer and ovarian cancer. Thanks for watching and for joining me in diving into the biology of this fungus in detail. Post your questions below in the comments.

    The old wives tale that "black mold is the worst" is very wrong, and Chaetomium is one of the absolute worst molds to have.

    Council drains are often blocked,just look during a heavy downpour.This all backfeeds into your house.

    I doubt I will get a response but can these wake up autoimmune diseases in children who have the genes in the family. My 2 children just got diagnosed with 2 autoimmune diseases in the last month. Now they are twins so they already had a weaker immune system.We found mold that came back as Chaetomium spp. it was under the carpet and then found in the air. There was a leak a year ago that maintenance said they cleaned up but cone to find out didn’t.

    I have Chaetomium spores at 2,668 cubic meter behind my bedroom window (drywall area is 5'x4') -- but he air analysis reads normal. Does this warrant a professional mold remediation?
    Also, I have penicillium/aspergillus at 6,203 cm behind my living room window (drywall area is 5'x4') -- but he air analysis reads normal. Does this warrant a professional mold remediation?

      I abandoned my house when it had 3500 spores per cubic meter. I live in a townhouse now with less than 250 spores per cubic meter.

    After finding this in your rental home through an air quality test what are the next steps to be healthy again ??? My agent is getting the house fogged , but not sure if they paln on removing the floorboards that were damaged from a leaking shower which im guessing is the biggest cause of all of this ... but ive been not well like year the 2nd half of this year ive even said to my doctor i just feel dumb and doing stupid things to my mental.health has worsened amongst other things

    Hi Dr Cameron,
    Thanks so much for posting this. Is it safe to live in a house in which one room has shown a level of 13 for chaetomium in a recent air sample?

    • @jtjm2332
      @jtjm2332 Před 4 měsíci

      Chaet is heavy and dense- usually difficult to show up on an air test. With that being said, the fact that it was found on an air test is not a good sign. The Ermi test is a better representation of mold in house
