    Soil is a decaying matter, it’s absolutely normal to run across white mold especially when collecting plants, you may even find a mushroom in your pot one day😂 anyhow while mold is not harmful to your plants at all it’s just feeding off the decaying matter in your soil. I would ease up on watering and make sure that the roots are getting adequate air flow, and keep your plants in a a spot that has light to prevent getting mold. Dark,wet, and no air flow perfect for mold. If you see the mold I’d recommend just getting a skewer and stabbing your soil gently and mix are the soil. Or if your freaked out just repot😌

      I second all of this and talk about all these great tips in this video - minus the stabbing of the soil. I’ll definitely give that a try! I normally aerate the soil before watering but it makes sense to do it after as well. And I’ve had some mushrooms on the soil, they’re kinda cute. Haha 🌿

      Honestly, your comment probably just saved my plant. It looks healthy on top, I JUST reported into a larger pot but I think the plastic tub under it is preventing airflow. It lost a few leaves so I took it down to look at it and the whole top of the soul was covered in white mold.
      Thanks for the tips! ❤️🫶🏻🙏🏻🤜🏼🤛🏼

    I have several bags of Fox Farm soil I bought locally. They loaded it in my car and I brought it home. 15 bags to be exact and the store stored them outside. Started unloading them from my car and realized they were twice as heavy as normal. I even had a 1 inch puddle of water on the floor IN MY CAR. I called the store and they apologized. I then asked them if the soil was going to be ok to use after getting this saturated. They said it should be fine. I then called Fox Farm and asked them and they too said it should be ok.
    Well they were both wrong and I mean WRONG. Opened up the first bag and the entire outside shell of the soil was blanketed with green fungus type mold. I threw away the green fungus shell and tried to use the center that looked ok. Sadly when I did my transplant the top soil grew the white mold seen in this video. It happened within 2 days of using the soil. They had plenty of air flow, light and drainage. Lessen here is do not buy soil stored outside.

    Many years ago a friend told me to bake the soil on a cookie sheet in the oven. It kills any unwanted stuff in it. Sadly it is a pain to rehydrate it. There are lots of tips out there, some people swear by neem oil spray. I've noticed that my plants generally struggle much more in winter, as I live in Idaho & winter is our longest season!😅 I generally only use pots with drainage holes & still get the white mold, especially being in a basement apartment with less sunlight in winter. Perhaps I'll get a grow light for them. My poor spider plants always start well but by mid winter they're nearly dead. Some suggest a diluted peroxide spray or sprinkling baking soda on the soil. I'm gonna try just poking some holes in the soil with a bamboo skewer or chop stick first.
    The cinnamon she's using is cassia cinnamon, its whats in most packages at the stores,however has a higher amount of arsenic in it than the "Ceylon" cinnamon that is all around better for everything. Its pronounced like "sail on" . Its usually easy to spot the differences between the two. Ceylon is a lighter color, usually closer to tan than reddish brown, and as for sticks it appears lighter and looks more like rolls of old parchment paper than the cassia sticks. Its usually more broken up looking because it isn't as thick and woody as cassia cinnamon sticks. Most packaging doesn't specify which type is in it. You can google images of ceylon vs. cassia and then you'll be able to have the actual pictures. I get mine at the grocery store, usually sticks packaged in the Hispanic section with other spices & its cheaper that way, too! But you can likely find it at health food stores,etc.!
    Good luck to everyone here trying to get rid of this nasty stuff!🙏💜

  • @VictorPoulin
    @VictorPoulin Před měsícem +1

    I use to use your method but stopped when I realized it didn't actually do anything but hide the mold that still grew under the cinnamon. I have not tried removing all the mold first though. I use to stir the mold into the top soil till it was not visible anymore and then I would apply the cinnamon. I'll give your method a try next time and let you know how it goes.

    Great information about dealing with mold on plants. You mentioned gloves. Everyone should try to wear gloves at all times, especially if you have artificial nails. Years ago we worked on a patient who got a cut which became infection from her soil. The infection got into her blood stream it damaged one of her heart valves. We had to replace her heart valve. After that experience I wear gloves & a mask all the time when working with soil. I have a large plant family of 40+ plants. Again great information I have learned some helpful tips I didn't know that you!

    I have had moldy soil, just a little. The plant was in a no drainage pit and it was a calathea so I keep them damp. It sat in a corner of the room without good circulation. I really did nothing with it. I know it’s not harmful to the plant, it was only spotty on the soil, and I turned the heat up in that corner and that seemed to help prevent further mold and dried the mold out.

    Thank you! I had a major mold infestation in my house and had a very, very yearssss long lethal battle from it's toxicity - roof, attic, HVAC, etc...during the plandemic and I was told it was severe covaids...yes I had a rough case, BUT it was the mold that messed up the gut and from there...domino effect. I'm rebuilding myself and healing but you are right in that mold is BAAAAD, especially if you have an "allergy" which aka means you have the gene HLA-RD which means you don't have genetic pathways to detox it. Anyway, all the plants survived, but I didn't haha. I make a 'come back,' but I looooove and grew up in a home where we were all about house plants and love that my mom raised me to care and love plants!

    I added cinnamon and it seem to proliferate the small amount of mold because it made it harder for top soil to dry, it was thick. I scraped all of that off and place near a window with plenty of natural light but not direct sun, then I turned on my dehumidifier for 50%. To help the soil dry out. There is no exact science to cinnamon on plants and some say you have to have a specific cinnamon. I say go to your garden store or florist and get a spray if the natural light and dehumidifier don't work.

    I bought a brand new bag of miracle grow soil and I noticed it had a weird stuffy smell when I opened the bag. Never bought miracle grow soil before so I assumed I'm just not accustomed to the product. It's a top dollar bag of soil. Surely it's me and not the established company. Now every single plant I used that soil with has an intense amount of mold. I've tried cinnamon. Didn't work. So I repotted with different soil (mixed cinnamon into it before putting in the pots). I disinfected the pots and sprayed a the roots with diluted hydrogen peroxide spray. Hopefully I never see the mold again. I've been trying to keep my methods "organic" but....ya know. Hello I had the same problem I use unglazed terracotta pots and trays. Wait 45 minutes to an hour then check if there is any water standing in the tray pour water out of tray. I check the bottom of my pots especially my hanging plants for mold. Check plants before you watering If I find any mold I take a paper towel or damp cloth dipped in bleach or vinigar to wipe off mold if it looks like mold is growing in the soil I repot the plant. I make sure to get the drainage holes, with a Q-tip After cleaning the tray in hot soapy water I rinse and spray a fungicide on the tray and bottom of the planter. Terracotta pots are great because they are porous, and the bottom is the last thing to dry out. So mold will grow on the bottom of planter, and it's tray. The best thing you can do is try to make sure there is no extra water between planter and try - that's easier said than done. It's a pain for me to check my hanging pots and my large planters.
