  • This cactus had a rough time adjusting to its new environment. At a certain point, it grew etiolated and then started growing normal once more. But now, adjustments need to be made again as this cactus is in danger of falling and breaking.

In summer, cacti grow fast here. Good thing I had to perform this cut during summer time. 😃

That looks like a fun project without extra hands to help you! Fold several pages of newspaper into the same shape as your piece of cloth, and use it like the cloth. Spines will not prick your hands then.

A couple of ways to tell which end was which, is match the cut ends to the width of the root portion from which you cut. Or look at the direction the spines on the root portion or top portion. Many times some of the larger spines may point down a bit so the cut portion will be the same. Looks like you have grown your collection in a couple of cuts !! Could also use one or two for grafting stock!!! Like the way you beveled the bottom cut . Should do better than left flat cut!! Thanks for sharing Ana!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, out to Las Vegas, have a wonderful day!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌💖🌵🌺🌴🌻🌹🌳🌷🌲🏵🌿😃👍

When I cut mine, I also forgot which end was the top and I left the cutting on a napkin outside (getting only morning sun) and it began growing sideways.
Good thing about Florida, is that there is so much humidity that the cacti 🌵 can grow without water

What a smart way to cut it. Something I learned from another video is to cut one side at an angle that you don’t want to plant in the dirt. 😊 ❤🌵

I have a peanut cactus that pups like crazy. I decided to take a few large (long) pups and put as decoration with a larger columnar cactus. These pups seem very robust and I find them growing where they fall with no support. I put rooting powder on and planted them all in one, straight away. Two weeks later all seemed fine except one pup which was going a bit red with stress. I had planted it upside down! So its head had rooting powder on it and had been covered in soil. The Pup was washed and put in the right way round it seeds ok now. The (to me) strange thing was after washing the head that had been buried instead of growing roots tiny pups had started to form even though its head had been under soil. Still there and not dropped off. Learning new stuff all the time. Thankyou for another excellent video.

It’s worth pointing out that some species of cactus, like the peanut cactus (Echinopsis chamaecereus), may look etiolated when displaying normal growth characteristics. These are often sold unlabeled. I almost threw a prop of one out last year thinking it was something else.

It's simple to tell them apart because you cut it Angled on the one end and straight on the other. I don't understand why this was so difficult. Obviously the angle cut came from the bottom of the cactus.

Etiolation can hapen for a lot of reasons, every top cut will etiolate, etiloation meean that the cactus is not growing healty. Also i prefer to use a sharp knife,
Midlle cuts take more time to develop a head.

      English:
It can happen when the cactis are indoors as well with what appears to be good sunlight & the room gets hot perhaps too hot. My advice is move them to a different spot to find each cacti's sweet spot. I've come to the conclusion that mine didn't get enough time in the sun.
