    It's pretty hard to tell when your cactus garden is indoors, but what I do is watch how much sunlight is coming in the window. Usually, by mid-March, the sunlight is coming in pretty good, and I can start breaking dormancy. By early April, the sun is very intense, and plants definitely need water. This is a very touchy time for house plants. The intensity, angle, and day length of the sun in April is just like August. Outdoors, it is still cold, and it may even snow, but indoors, it is summertime full force.

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  Před 2 lety +1

      So true! It is more tricky if you have plants indoors. My cacti that are overwintering in the garage are also still in winter mode. Temperatures there is consistently in the 50’s-60’s. It is interesting to know how you closely observe the sun angles and intensity. I learn from you as well. 🙂

I put 3/4 tsp of white vinegar in my cold tap water ( 1 quart size watering can) for my cacti. It raised the acidic level for the cacti only. They seem to respond nicely. I have 4 new cacti and waiting for end of February to repot. I believe it’s better during their growing period. The soil drains good when I have given them a small drink.

Even though I’ve owned cacti on and off for 40 years I just started learning about how to care for them properly. Better late then never, I hope. I try not to get my delicate cacti out of my greenhouse until there is no more forecast of freeze. But in case that happens to you, you may throw a blanket on top of your cactus to keep them warm during a temporary cold spell. Keep them dry as well.

      @@CactusCaffeine I'm still specting our last cold days too☺️, but, I have a hahniana crown opening, another Mammillaria species forming a full crown (that will help with its ID) and the Neoporteria gerocephala in full bloom. And there are signs of some echinopsis starting to develop their buds too and starting new pups very fast. So happy with the beginning of the season ☺️. I wish you an amazing blooming season🙏💕.

    I just wanted to know if it is a good thing if my cactus, I think it’s a peanut cactus, has been flowering in middle ing from the east coast. It started flowering around April 24th, I think. Does that mean it is healthy? It spent all winter here outside and seemed to be living what someone might say is okay and I barely watered it then and tried to keep it from the cold rain showers. It seems to be fine and I thought it would be better outdoors before the last fall, would you say it is healthy or should I still get it some nutrients from fertilizer?

    My cacti do not seem to be going dormant here in Malaysia, perhaps its because the temperatures stay just about the same all year round. I wonder if I can force them to?

    I reside in the east coast and brought all my plants inside with growth lights set up. Will that have any impact since the temperature they have is what I have in my apartment? Also, I only water them once a month even if under room temperature. Hoping that will give them rest and will flower by spring! Looking forward to your response Ms. Anna and to everybody else who would like to pitch in. Thank you.

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  Před 2 lety

      If your indoor temperature is warm, they may not go fully dormant but they will slow down in growth. Water them lightly only if they show signs of severe dehydration. Try to keep them in a cool place inside the house, away from heater vents. This will encourage dormancy. 🙂

    I have a question! I got a cactus recently from Home Depot that was budding and flowering, but it's overly root bound(Has a ring of roots grown out of the bottom of the nursery pot). Would it be a good idea to repot it now or wait to repot it until after it's done flowering?

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  Před 2 lety

      Enjoy the flowers first, then you can repot it. Some cactus are sensitive and will drop their buds if disturbed. I😉

    I live in the Pacific Northwest, the Olympic Peninsula of Washington. Out temps are now consistently in the 40s F. All of my cacti are indoors. Is it too early to repot my root-bound cacti that are still in their nursery pots? I don't want to wait until they begin to bud because I think the shock can cause them to drop their buds. In my experience, even turning them in relation to their light source can cause the buds to twist off. So when will it be safe to start repotting? Thank you.

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  Před 2 lety +1

      If they are indoors, you can repot them. Just don’t water them unless they show signs of shriveling. 🙂

      @@CactusCaffeine Thank you. I will begin repotting in earnest. Some of them are rootbound and bone dry. I worry about the roots getting desiccated enough to die off.
      I stopped by Home Depot today to look at their cacti. They have a lot & all of them have those awful fake flowers glued onto their growth points. One was budding but looked a bit spider webby. I didn't buy any.

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  Před 2 lety +1

      How exciting that your Echinopsis is in buds already! Is it outdoors or indoors? If outdoors, I would say wait until your temperature consistently warms up. But if it is indoors, yes, you can give it a sip if it is looking very shriveled.

      Check out eBay for Echinopsis pups. There's a woman who sells them for $1.50 each plus $8.00 for shipping no matter how many you buy. I bought some from her and they arrived bare-root with very healthy root systems already. I'm very old, and it dawned on me that I probably won't live to see them bloom, but you should get flowers by your senior year. 😍
