When ever you grow cacti and they don't die you are doing it right. To get them to bloom, try using tomato fertilizer, on them. They'll go crazy. Good luck GF1 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😎
Thanks a lot for the tip and for watching Frank, ive been thinking about doing the tomato fertilizer for a while and i think you just gave me the last push i needed to try it! haha Please subscribe to see all my future updates!
When should u do this ?
Which tomato fertilizer? I mean the numbers.
Leaving roots dry for too long when they’re not in growing season can make them rot away also. If you’re not sure about watering I would use a heavy gritty soil. Lots of lava rock, perlite stuff like that. Trial and error is also a great teaching guide.
For sure, trial and error is always necessary 🤓
Thank you! This collection is a joy to watch.

Thanks so much for posting this. I've been looking for another cacti exclusive channel, hopefully this is one. I have found that if I do not water in the dormant season at all the cacti lose their roots and I have lost cacti due to lack of water. I have a Rebutia that I'm trying to save cause I gave her no water this past winter. They need about 1/3 of the water they get in the growing season. If they start looking like they are starved for water, they need a sip to get them through the season.

Very detailed info. In it's natural habitat, cacti will get watered by the dew of the morning pretty much daily, in some seasons more dew than others of course. But yes the soil would be dry for months until it rains again. At least here in South Cali we get little rain a year, you can count w your fingers probably! So all these grow very in landscaping. Just gotta keep a desert like mentality ( for cacti) Doesn't have to be the dryest nor hottest either, you get my idea. 😆 Thanks again for the thorough video👍🌵💚
You are so lucky to live in Cali! 😍 Thanks for watching.

Hello I'm new to your channel, love how you were explaining. I'm a bit scared, always had a problem with cacti. I recently bought a beautiful one that I don't know the name, been searching they are little & mounted onto each other. It's mid September I'm a bit confused how how much water or frequency I should give it water please HELP. LOL
4 years later…. How is your starfish sansevieria doing?? I just got one a couple of weeks ago. Love them!! Thank you!!
My cactus plants love rain water!!❤️❤️
It really the best for them! 🤩
Y’all I have the attention span of a chipmunk so let’s see if I got it
- Water only during growing season (late spring/all summer in a zone 10 place)
-Only water if soil is completely dried out (once a week depending)
-Water COMPLETELY through + a little extra but do not let sit in water (quick draining soil+drainage holes+ adequate sun/heat)
- Don’t get the actual cactus wet unless it has enough time to dry off before the heat hits as to not burn the cactus (dawn/dusk)
Honey Butter your attention span is just perfect! Haha you got everything 🤓 Thank you so much for watching and please subscribe 😬
What do you mean by zone ten place
My attention span is just fine...thank you. My plants are my babies. I watch and carefully tend to their every need. Ive been told i over fuss. Which is true im sure but its not lack of attention.
@@marydiscuillo142 I said *I* have the attention span of a chipmunk. Why did you take my comment personally it has nothing to do with you.
@@marydiscuillo142 she wasn't talking to you stupid
Hey I noticed you have small rocks/ pebbles inside some of your pots, what's the significance? Thanks
hey Manuel great video thanks for The info!! I have a question, what is the hose you are using to water the cacti with? thanks :D
Its a water container/hose from amazon
Hello, Thank you for such an informative video! i had a question when you say not to water them during dormancy, do you mean not even a single sip of water of them? or should we give them some water so that the roots dont completely dry out?
Veeral Dogra depending on the species you may have to go totally dry. Also depends on how cold your winters are and how much sun you receive. Thanks for watching, please subscribe!
Great tips👌😌I water the same except I water when the weather is rainy because that is when the temperature cools down and the cacti can take up more water efficiently🙏If I water before a sunny day the soil dries too fast and the temperature rises so the process of water uptake is inhibited. At times I will water a cacti that is very dehydrated twice; once and the next day again. That brings them to life after the extreme hot midsummer. I tend not to water in midsummer because it is over 37℃ / 98.6°F and most cacti just slow down. Anyway, thanks for sharing🤲✨And I am enjoying your content
Nice thank you! That wouldn’t work well in humid environments as the added humidity causes fungal infection and rot. Thanks for watching!
Hi! Awesome vid and beautiful collection! Wondering if you could help me with a question; how can you tell if the soil is dry if you have rock cover on top of the soil? Most of my cacti I either have a bunch of rocks around them, or a layer of sand, so I can’t really see the soil. Any tips? I would appreciate any help so much!!
Madeline Profio i usually touch the drainage hole and and the soil there! ive heard a few peep on yt recommend.
You could stick a skewer in there, if the soil sticks to it then it is still moist, if no soil sticks then it is dry.
OMG you are too an expert! Look at those gorgeous plants of yours 😱 I'm struggling with trying to know which are in dormancy for my indoor ones & under grow lights. Do I not water at all in the winter & which ones still need watering. Thank you so much for your video.
@@RareCactus Oh I did " Like" & Subscribed 😉
Love the vid,, thank you for sharing 👌🏽 !! How important is drainage holes ??
it is usually said that drainage holes are very important cause they don't like their roots constantly being soaked in water, on the contrary I've seen people grow succulents in aquaponics :D
They are extremely important when it comes to growing succulents. You can certainly have a cactus in a pot with no holes for a while, but it will not thrive since their roots need good drainage and especially lots of oxygen to prevent rot. Thank you for watching and please consider subscribing for more updates!
Great video New subbie
Bree Lawrence thank you, Bree! Welcome :)
What kind of watering hose is that? I want to buy one. I only have a hose for watering my cacti and i feel the stream can be a bit strong even on very low.
Johnny Florida it’s a 2 gal sprayer from Amazon. It definitely helps when you have hundreds of plants haha
when does winter dormancy start when i wont water my Cacti? Is their a specific month like around October?
Around October-November when temperatures drop below 50 F. Thanks for watching, subscribe!
I live in California but I still water my succulents during the winter and I haven't had any root rot yet from my succulents
You are very lucky to live in the best weather for cacti! :)
Hi. I'm new to cactus... so it was really helpful. However, my question is in summer I have to water it every week but what to do in winter?
I water mine twice a month in summer and once in winter (once every 5 months)
Unclear, what, in the winter?
Hello , I have a few questions !
How often should I change the pots ( which kind is the best ?) and the soil and what exactly do I need to prepare it ?
Do i need to expose the plants to the sun the whole day ? or put them in the shadow ?

You are one of the few chanels on you tu e that have a comprehensive video on how to water cactus, the question here is or my question is how often when they are indoors or store bought, when do you know if to water or not, Thank you
When indoors cacti should get even less water than outdoors since they won’t dry out as fast. They should only be watered when it is hot outside
In a tropical country where we only have 2 seasons, the wet and dry season, i.e: the Philippines, I wonder if the dormant season here is the same in countries with 4 seasons?
Thats a great question! If your temperatures are mild and there is lots of humidity, you will likely have to adjust your watering schedule.
i just bought a cactus ball from Home Depot. I dont know when the last time they water it was. I can't touch the soil because the spikes pretty cover the whole pot. how can you tell if the soil is completely dry and need water again?
When in doubt, dont water. Wait 2 weeks, then start watering.
I would probably repot that cactus into a slightly bigger pot as it is probably getting root bound now too.
@@paullaing5921 Most likely :)
How often should you have your succulent in sunlight? I read that it should have at least 4 hours a day but im not sure
Hi Danielle, 8-10 hours of filtered sunlight is best
I hope you reply, where did you buy the clear plastic for shade? I don't want to buy a black net
Hey thanks for watching! I got the plastic at Home Depot and they also sell good ones on eBay: greenhouse roof.
So how do I know when a cactus has finished its winter dormancy?
When temperatures are over 70 Fahrenheit. Thanks for watching, subscribe!
We reported a 23yearold in the same pot & repotted & watered it a few times already thinking since it being repotted l wanted it to have waterl in Colorado I brought in doors didn't want it to be froze have it in front of window where it dosent GIT full sun but shaded sun What should I do that I've watered it a few times . Can you possia boy let me know ??
He just ignored you, that’s cold!
If you keep the cactus indoors definitely lower the frequency of the watering.
My cacti are on the west side of house. Is it ok if they have no protection from rain. We cover them if there is chance of frost.
I recommend keeping them from rain, but it depends on your local weather.
I get scared to water my captus couse some get tiny and die what am i doing wrong please help
Maybe the soil is incorrect. I use mostly inorganic soil and my plants receive 10 hours of filtered sun per day
I’ve murdered a fair amount of cacti and I’m thinking of starting again. I live near the equator and it’s usually 30-35 degrees Celsius outside all the time. How often do you think I should water my plants? Thanks :)
Thank you! :)
What if they are in the ground and u cant really look at the soil? What if its a big container do u still water it heavy only occ or just the root area of the cactus/succulents?
Is it really true water droplets can burn your plants i heard evaporation occurs first.????
Hey there, water droplets can burn your plants so its best to water in the early morning or late evening. If they are in the ground, I would allow more time in between watering or not water at all.
When Winter comes you stop watering completely? For how long? Two months, three?
Correct, about 2-3 months. But I do water some genera like Melocactus for example that don't like to get THAT dry.
I live in Texas, with 100+ degree subnets with no rain. I have large cactus in pots that suit outside but under a shaded awning. How often should they be watered?
I’ve heard people in similar situation watering weekly, but you must experiment slowly to avoid rotting anyone 😅
Hey I’m in Texas too.. I deep water every two weeks with ACV added, I’ve also cut down on the amount of organic matter I use in my soil, so they dry out appropriately
"Camanchaca" comes from a Quechua word, and I've never heard of it outside Peru and Chile before. Are you from any of those countries by any chance? Or it just happens that you know its meaning and the term is more wide spread that I thought?
Pd: Cool name, by the way
WigantX Hey there! I am originally from Venezuela, but I live on the east coast of the United States and specialize in cultivating Chilean cacti 🌵 hence the name East Coast Camanchaca haha thank you

How Often should I water my cactus during the winter when they’re indoors
Hey! Thanks for watching. Unfortunately I have no experience with cold winters or growing indoors, but if possible I would refrain from watering at all unless they are seedlings.
Hey what’s the name of the one sorta yellow and green that looks a bit more like flowers called? I hope you know which one I’m referring to lol (you water it at 4:09)

I've heard that a cactus can't be overwatered. So, isn't it bad to water it until the water runs out of the pot?
It is bad to overwater, but overwatering means watering too frequently, not using too much water when you do water. Thanks for watching, subscribe :)
I live in Minnesota. Do I not water them all winter?
I wouldn’t due to the cold, but I don’t have any experience with the cold you deal with living here in Miami, so you will have to experiment. I doubt you will kill any cactus by not watering a couple of months tho.
What direction are cactus pointed and how many hours of sun do they receive a day
South, west or east facing. Never north.
8-10 hours of filtered sunlight are best, I grow my plants outdoors :)
I’m so afraid to water my cacti because I dread root rot. But I also don’t want them to get too dry and burnt...
Totally understandable! But they never really end up drying and burning from drought. They do however rot easily if you overwater 😉 Having the right soil definitely helps with that. Check out my website EastCoastCamanchaca.con for soil mixes and more information.
What about indoor cacti in October???
Sorry but I don't grow any plants indoors so I don't know :(

When the cactus have brown horns
Does that means its already dead?
No
If the spines were always brown, the plant is ok.
Late but you should be watering at night for CAM
