- In Episode 1 of "The Last Of Us," a doctor talks about viral outbreaks and pandemics in the '60s. The main concern isn't bacteria; it's fungi. This fungus, named Ophiocordyceps camponoti-floridani, can control its host like a puppet, with the fungus itself pulling the strings and controlling the host. It's a scary prospect that sets the stage for our story.

Just by the way he looks, he could have played Oppenheimer
He would have made a great Oppenheimer.
I thought it was Oppenheimer in color.
An older Oppie, yes, but the movie showed him younger too. John Hannah can't pass for 20.
Dammit. Now thats all i see. If they de-aged him. It wouldve been perfect.
He's also a superior actor to Cillian murphy, just not as well known.
John Hannah is great in this scene but special credit to the host that gradually goes from smug host, to confused, to petrified.

Yes that was a really well acted scene, also, which fitted perfectly in the late 60's ambience.

I love how realistically this was shot. Every bit of it felt like a real talk show chat. Well done.
Not to mention terrifying as a pandemic.
Talk show hosts wouldn't let their guests talk uninterrupted that long.
Everything except the colour scheme. The whole teal-and-orange look is a modern-movie, post-digital-grading phenomenon. TV broadcasts never looked like this. If anything, it was likelier to be a bit magenta-heavy, but mostly it was always a very neutral/natural colour scheme (whites being #ffffff white), just a bit under-saturated.
That’s the point
@llchapman1234 Nowadays, for sure, you can't speak more than 10 seconds max, but in those days, late 60's, there was much more respect in tv shows/debates.
Nowadays you have to speak fast and briefly, because most people's average attention span never exceeds 10sec, thanks to degenerate species having been raised with retarded parents.
Darwin is rolling in his grave.

One of my most favorite cold opens in a show. Love how you can see and feel the building tension in the room. From playful and joking to deadly serious and terror.
The amount of detail they put into this show is awesome. Opening the first episode with a scientist who fears that fungus could evolve and infect humans was brilliant. John Hannah gave a great performance here, even though it was a cameo.
Yeah instead of drawing out the mystery over the whole season, it's delivered immediately. We as viewers knows everything he's saying is what happened, and at the same time it adds the underlying dismay that his warnings went unheeded.
Now, I believe that the first game would have been ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING,if they opened it with a similar segment like this
Even better if it was just on a random TV during gameplay
This scene is the example I give when I tell people the show improves on the game's story

This scene. This one particular scene is what drew me to this show. The in depth and how the scientist explained how the cordycep worked in that world was truly terrifying. What also made this scene great is how everyones mood went from seeing this theory as a joke to a serious look in their faces of realization.
That's a real fungus and it actually works exactly as it's described in the real world.
@@h__rthey don't prevent decomposition however
The shots of "serious look" were also at the same point he's talking about our minds being infected and overtaken, hive mind like, the same way television and talk media began doing back then. So it's both a nod to the seriousness of the described situation but also a not-so-subtle nod to the, similar, impact mass media has had on us.
Cordeyceps like ideology of the political nature, Cordeyceps like Cordeyceps the real fungus. Humans fight their ideology wars and never stop till too late and the fungi has evolved, or we are all dead before then through complacency.
Cordycep sinensis is a rubbish name for a supplement.
One good out of this is that most(if not everyone) in that room were already old enough to have died before any of this happened by the shows events.
Hmm, isn’t this version of TLOU set in the Bush era? Quite possible the scientist was still alive, as this was only 30 years prior to the Bush administration.
@@Lewis-fd9js that scientist looks to be well into his 50's at this point, and the actor is in his 60's. If the character is the same age as the actor, 30 years would put him past 90. There's a possibility he'd still be alive, though it's very doubtful.
@@thefearofg0ds758 fair point!
They would have been alive as the climate got warmer though. So they may have thought back to his comments.
How is that good?
John Hannah is fantastic in this scene.
Conclusion fungi ain't no joke. Please don't kill me mushrooms
Conclusion should be stop burning our goddamn planet up
They won’t kill you, that’s what makes it so terrifying.
"I for one welcome our new fungi overlords"
The probability of you being killed by fungi is very low, but not 0%
Like he said in the show; they aim not to kill you but to control you. Thats even worse if u ask me, you are self aware but nothing u can do.
"What if, for instance, the world were to get slightly warmer?" Gave me a chill watching it for the first time.
I was anxious about this show and then relaxed after this scene. What a fantastic opening.
same, i was totally ready to ignore this show entirely but by god this scene really sets the horror to 11 and makes us ready for the ride we know is coming

I love that the apocalypse in this show was because of the tenacity of nature itself, not our mistakes.
"What if the planet where to get hotter"
Which happens at natural rates, yes, but at the moment humans have their foot on that gas pedal. I think that's what the scientist hinted at.

Was delighted to see John Hannah steal the show in the opening scene - remember him from way back in the mid-90's in Four Weddings and a Funeral, he gives a phenomenal speech at his lover's funeral in that movie, great actor.
He recites Funeral Blues by WH Auden.
JOHNATHAN FROM THE MUMMY
BATIATAS!
who would have thought Batiatus would eventually find himself here
The detail of the public looking like "zombies" it is also quite on po int.
This is a brilliantly done scene. In three minutes he foreshadows the entire cause and premise of the monsters in the show, no long drawn out mystery, no untold story. He's giving everyone a warning, that we know goes unheeded, and the entire idea is plausible if not completely possible in the real world too. The point where everyone's face turns serious and nobody else is saying a word you realize everyone in that room is scared to death of the potential.
This is one of the best scenes in tv history I think, every second of it is perfect from the tone switching, to the panning of the audience. The precise dialog and the call back with “we lose”
Honestly one of the greatest openers to a TV series ever. The casting, cinematography, pacing, and natural exposition are all so well done
That last part when he says “We lose.” Always gives me chills!
When I sat down for this show I had some slight concern... but this scene right off the bat put me at ease; "Oh... Oh shit they know what they're doing here".
Its just so chilling, and more so given that we've all recently lived through an epidemic of our own. I'd this had released in April 2020... I think people would be making amateur case studies on the subject. Given how pivotal Covid-19 was, we've all moved on from it rather quickly. I would have expected there to be a new wave of lockdown/pandemic related movies out to explore the human condition and how we coped with the world ending, either real or fictional... but no.
Maybe the 27 days later sequel. 😅
John Hannah acted in Agents of Shield and he was great in it. He deserves bigger roles.
He will always be the funny brother from The Mummy
Fan of Christopher Heyerdahl, the second scientist next to John Hannah.

Can't believe Batiatus survived and became a scientist. Such a great redemption arc.
It’s was great to see John Hannah again. Simply amazing!
this is top notch acting and editing... 👌🏿..
John Hannah taught me how to curse like a man in Spartacus.

I love that shot right there.
The way the two seniors are leaning forward in their seats with blank expressions on their faces….they look zombie-like in that moment.
That whole series of quick cuts to the audience members as he talks about the fungi taking control of billions of them, poisoning their minds and bending them to the will of the fungus, ending with that shot of the seniors…masterfully creepy and eerie 👌
Kind of ironic as well that it’s being broadcast on the television. A device that has helped to poison our minds and control our thoughts and behaviour.
Nice to see Big Head giving interviews.
What a wonderfully acted, scripted, directed, produced scene! I watched this the first time quite impressed at the work.
Fantastic scene. What makes it even more so is that his hypothesis is true in real life
It’s not
@@bluealteran4599 why exactly?
@@smittyssnippets1358 It's not impossible, but extremely unlikely.
The fungus has to infect mammals instead of insects, which is a huge leap.
The fungus has to grow much, much larger to infect every part of a human body. That will take a long time during which the fungus has to survive in the body without killing or completely disabling it.
Then the fungus somehow has to control this huge body. Muscles, bigger than hundred of ants, have to move in a coordinated manner to move us around. Fungi are smart, but they need to be a lot smarter to move a human.
And the fungus has to achieve all of this through a series of random mutations that might take millions of years to occur naturally.
@@picklejho5833 thank you for the explanation, that was bothering me for a long time. Now I can sleep well again.
To add to what others said, it's also possible to cure and prevent. He says it's not possible and it adds a lot to the scene but that's not true. Some grain processing plants use electron-beam processing to destroy anything organic. It's not everywhere because its expensive, but it wouldn't seem expensive if this started being a problem.
This was the best scene in the entire show IMO.
This expert came from fighting Imohtep to fight a fungus
The first scene of the show and I already knew it would be GOATed because of how good it is
And then Mr. O’Connell comes in the room and says, Jonathan I thought I told you no more wild parties..
It's wild this was made while covid was going crazy
Bro, speed ran Egyptian mummies. Now he's at zombies funguses. 🤣
I didn't think the goofy guy from the mummy movies could terrify me, but here we are...
For everyone worrying, our bodies can get up to 103° and even 104° without suffering injury. The fungus can evolve to withstand 99-100° temperatures and our bodies would still win
But what if that were to change, what if for instance the world were to get even warmer?
@@leton7565 yeah nah n8 then we'll die for heat exhaustion well before any fungus evolves to survive that
@@starliner2498 As far as I'm concerned, we're all still evolving
There's also preventatives and cures and it is possible to make them. it's my favorite part of this scene but its untrue as well. Not only medical treatments, but some processing plants for grains and dry bulk(how the fungus spread in the show) they use electron-beam processing. Literally a particle accelerator that shreds anything organic with high energy electrons as the grain passes through on a conveyor. It's not everywhere, but it could be if suddenly we needed it.
Also fungus won't evolve over the span of 50 years
Good to see Batiatus doing well
Realize how the guy's face changes the moment the other guy says"t what if for instance, the world were to get slightly warmer". Thats because it already was and everyone knew it. Amazing detail
Best intro ever 😊
i think it's interesting to note that the talk show host was likely alive when the outbreak occurred 35 years later. i wonder what was going through his head when it all happened.
probably the fungus
Man the first half of this episode was amazing!
Does the scientist know his ancestor had a Lupus in Capua?
As a fun guy, I see this as an absolute win.
I loved the acting in this scene from both actors
one of the best openings
Man… as soon as he says what if the world were to get warmer? Like that just hits you in the gut then he breaks it down how there’s dozens of variants and types that if any one of them decide to make the evolution jump we are fucked…

Pre-apocalypse scenes are always the best in good zombies movies!
Back when this show first aired, too many people took this too literally.
Science is incredible, and once you understand stuff, you’ll be able to know why the crazy ideas like an acid that would burn to the center of the earth can’t happen.
that is the absolute best cold opening for a show of all time. They introduce the concept, the threat to this world and they make the idea seem realistic even though Cordyceps doesn't work that way at all.
When it comes to fungus, there are already some humdingers out there!
Not once did he mention his successful ludus back in greece.
what is sad, is that this conversation is really realistic, and scientists say that apparently, that may actually happen, as we stop being in ice age, that might actually happen, hopefully no
Do you know why I found this scene more scary than the whole show ?
Because that's not science fiction. This fungus exists.
In real life if this was possible at the game-show scale and we had someone telling us or trying to warn us it will be considered just an internet nut
Just like covid-19 pandemic.

John Hannah is so great as coming off as the doctor that knows anything and everything that might happen, to a fault. All I’ve seen him in is Agents of Shield and here, but in those two projects, hard not to listen to his role.

Episode 3 tho. If you're a fan of this last of us. You will watch episode 3 over and over. Start from there
Can't believe Druckmann has stated that the fireflies would've actually found a cure 😂
You know the other most terrifying thing about his comment about the earth getting warmer, besides the fact that it makes the fungal plague humanity's own fault? The fact that this scene takes place in the late 1960s, around the time when scientific consensus on the danger of anthropogenic global warming was starting to emerge. Even back then, there were warnings about what could happen, and we didn't listen. The Earth slowly warmed, and then the fungi adapted, and about forty years later, the world came crumbling down.
Big Head graduated from Stanford to the talk show circuit I see.
I used to do some work for The CDC and knew a few epidemiologists and while this whole scene is 100% accurate and is a real possibility , people shouldn’t freak out just yet, it’s still not possible for fungi to live inside humans. The world has gotten warmer since 1968 but for this to happen it’s gonna take a lot more time. But this is such a good scene because it’s real and it’s accurate. There is no way to combat fungal infections inside human beings, they can’t test it or study it cause it just isn’t possible to do yet, and that’s why if it ever happens (not likely for the foreseeable future) it would be a disaster.
TLDR: Basically yes it’s possible, but it would take a really really long time for it to evolve that point, meaning.. you and your children and their children have nothing to worry about in this respect.
Thats what makes it scary. It is plausible science fiction.
I’m sorry but you must be lying ? Fungal infections do exist, they’re not even that rare ? Furthermore, they’re treatable. Not from cordyceps obviously, but still
Medjai warrior on fire charges Jonathan. “And did I panic? I think not!” *explosions* **Dives off boat**
