But its true that Duke Leto faar to easy agreed to something which from the very beginning screams loud : *ITS A TRAP!!!*
On the other hand... until Leto the II didn't break the curse of the Spice the whole "Diune Verse" was incredibly easy to conquer for any space faring civilizations able to operate without the Navigators...
Of course I know that Herbert created very one sided Universe operated around Spice but somehow I doubt there are NO spiced spacefaring civs around but they doesn't interfere with the Empire and its subjects since entire Empire's economy is based on Spice... which for those free of it civs has simply no value?..
OR... maybe I'm far too used to the multi civs SciFi franchises so for me Diune Verse is very... gray painted world... without serious diversity?..
But that's just my personal opinion of course. 😉

This scene wasn't in the book. When I first saw it, it felt so well executed and to fit so perfectly in the plot, that surely it had to be part of the source material. Only after I read the books did I understand that it was actually one of Villeneuve's own contributions. This really makes one appreciate the creative process behind movies in general, and this one in particular. I think it takes a special kind of director to understand, confidently, where and what to change the source material to make it more cinematographic.

It's unlikely the Herald suspected the Emperor's involvement such as it was. If the other houses of the Landsraad knew about the Emperor helping to destroy the Atreides they'd rise up and destroy House Corino. It was a shock to everyone when Sardaukar showed up.
What everyone including the Duke expected was simply that it would invite war between the Harkonnen and Atreides. So the Herald knew that the Duke had guaranteed himself a war with one of the most ruthless and cruel Houses in the Known Galaxy. And a House that had just been enriching itself off of Arrakis for the past 70 years or whatever it was.

Then a seemingly tiny craft leaves the guild ship and heads to the surface, where we get a look at its scope against humans and it's huge! Revealing just how big the Guild Heighliner must really be in comparison...

      Landing craft: 170mm tall
The mothership diameter is about 60X the diameter of the landing craft.
      The diameter of the mothership is therefore 1.80m (a person)*170*60 = 18,360m.
Obviously a very rough estimate but in any case it's probably more than 10km in diameter.

Follow that with the shot of Gurney from afar with tight focus: another classic funeral shot.

The score, the unspoken tension and political feel of it...I always enjoy the subtle threat of violence in dialogue more than the explosive action scenes. When I saw this for the first time, I knew I was going on an epic adventure. Secondly, I love how this feels like a populated alien world with a rich history. And I love when the future is depicted this way...the costume design is inventive without being unrecognizable. It's silhouettes and material we're familiar with, but looks otherworldly in this context. Finally, Oscar Isaac's voice is so majestic. He delivers the gravity and dread needed in the scene.

@@BobJason1 As long as the encapsulate the "spirit" of Dune, I'll consider it a job well done. This is such a dauntingly difficult book series to bring to film but they've done a superb job of it so far 💙

I love the camera panning over at 1:50 while he lists all of the factions there to witness this event, and as it centers on each representative group he says their name; the imperial court, the spacing guild, the bene gesserit. Such a simple but clever composition that lets you know who each individual is without the characters themselves having to speak. Costume designs are also on point here.

This is my favorite part of the movie. It's the one that finally and completely draws me in to this science fiction world. I feel like this is where the movie truly starts.

One of the best Scenes in the movie, that "Herald of the Change" was something...he was straight to the point!

Hope we see the Herald again in some manner. He strikes me as a great actor to follow.

The Herald gave me the impression of having a hard and fatalistic sympathy for Duke Leto.

Honestly, this is a masterclass in book to film adaptation. Stands up there with peter jackson’s LOTR

And for every champion that announces a masterpiece, there are plenty of villains who will challenge with great aplomb said assertion. If only it was even close to LOTR.

@@thecocktailian2091 I love both, for me the Dune and the Lotr universe are dead tied together, I can't pick one to be superior, they are both masterclasses of worldbuilding, have fantastic stories and amazing media.

3:30 This is exactly how it went down when I turned in my final for Organic Chemistry II, the most difficult course I have taken so far. I handed it in to her and asked, so it's done, my professor she looked at me and smiled and said, it's done and then gave me a hug.

Leto Atreides is so dignified, magnificiently royal and his look reminds me of Assyrian art, like Ashurbanipal. Do you folks remember the scenes inside the palace? The art inside is reminiscent of ancient Assyrian relief art. Look it up. Also, look at the script in the contract/written decree in this scene, it reminds me of Cyrillic and Georgian 🇬🇪 script.
