Jean-Philippe Rameau - 3 Ouvertures: Les Talens Lyriques, Zoroastre & Dardanus

Jean-Philippe Rameau (25 September 1683 - 12 September 1764) was one of the most important French composers and music theorists of the 18th century. He replaced Jean-Baptiste Lully as the dominant composer of French opera and is also considered the leading French composer for the harpsichord of his time, alongside François Couperin.

Is that Rameau's own handwriting, or that of one of his copyists? I've never seen such clean handwriting from that era.

These are copyist hand writings. All scores for Versailles were neatly and carefully hand written. If not you would be out of a job as a copyist.

Ik denk dat de ouverture van Zoroastre revolutionair was voor zijn tijd en veel tijdgenoten heeft geïnspireerd tot het schrijven van zulke dramatische muziek.

Het is gewoon Strum en Drang met élegance uit Versailles...! :-) Soms zou je denken dat zijn muziek 20 jaar later geschreven zou zijn.

@@engelbertschoormans het meest bijzondere is, dat zelfs toen hij 60, 70 jaar oud was, bleef innoveren. Ik denk dat zijn muzikale erfenis bijna niet te onderschatten is. En inderdaad, ik zie ook een aantal gelijkenissen met de Sturm und Drang beweging in de jaren 60 en 70 van de 18e eeuw. Je zou je bijna afvragen waarom zulke heftige, gewaagde muziek toendertijd zo populair was.

It is quite interesting how Rameau sounds more Italian than French to me here. Despite his usage of the oboes and traverso flutes all over the score (something that Italian composers didn't like so much) he still sounds Italian. Just few melodic closing formulae points the "Frenchiness" here but it is only this.

Check out Campra's attempt to combine French and Italian idioms in as a new style of composition expressed in the preface to his Cantates Francaises. Rameau and other French composers utilized the same ideas.

Seguramente la partitura original de Rameau tiene anotadas las semicorcheas de forma natural no puntilladas y ya los músicos de esa época sabían que debían tocarse puntilladas.(como en el jazz). Pero bueno no está mal que las hayan anotado así.
