The world is such that we are very familiar with many well-renowned but relatively unimportant figures who have done little with their lives, yet at the same time ignorant of great artists who have enriched us.

Violin Sonata No. 2, Op. 85 (1940)
Dedication: Carl-Olof Josephson
1. Allegro (0:00)
2. Lento cantabile (4:45)
3. Allegro assai (13:04)
Cecilia Zilliacus, violin and Bengt-Ake Lundin, piano
Born in Bosjökloster, he was an organist (completing his examinations in 1909), and as a young man a concert pianist and music teacher. In 1915 he began studying at the Stockholm Conservatory under Ernst Ellberg. Later teachers included Wilhelm Stenhammar (counterpoint) and Hermann Scherchen (conducting). Stenhammar included several of Rosenberg's early works in concerts he arranged. After the First World War, he toured Europe and became a prominent conductor. In 1920 he studied on a scholarship in Berlin, Dresden, Vienna and Paris, which brought formative contacts with Arnold Schönberg and Paul Hindemith.
While his earlier works display the influence of Sibelius, he soon led the way for Swedish composers to move away from the late Romantic style and became considered as somewhat radical. His output covered all genres, from his 14 works for string quartet (1920-1972) and eight symphonies (1917-1974, including his symphony no. 2 Grave, symphony no. 4 Johannes Uppenbarelse, fifth symphony Örtagårdsmästaren and sixth Sinfonia Semplice) as well as Piano Concerto no. 2 to songs. He wrote a considerable body of work for the theatre (around 50 scores in total), including nine operatic works.
He taught composition privately to amongst others Karl-Birger Blomdahl, Ingvar Lidholm, and Daniel Börtz. He opined that "One creates out of what has been before, out of the experiences of others, as well as those of oneself, out of everything one knows, has read, or been acquainted with".
His violin concerto features as part of the sound track of the 1936 film Intermezzo, directed by Gustaf Molander and starring Ingrid Bergman and Gösta Ekman. He also composed music for the 1944 film Hets (known in English as either Torment or Frenzy), directed by Alf Sjöberg from a screenplay by Ingmar Bergman.
Rosenberg was Vice-President of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in 1951-1953, received a honorary doctorate from Uppsala University in 1951 and was a honorary member of the International Society for Contemporary Music. He died in Bromma, Stockholm.

I like the way he utilizes modes in his work, making a nostalgic and mystical atmosphere. Also, the 2nd movement is incredibly good. Very soothing.
Downright lovely!
The Finale is so beautiful.

first year trying out for state guys lets see how this goes!!
The saxophonist in the original soundtrack play it two classes better. The expression, naturality, no exaggeration, in the sax theme is much better in the original, in my opinion
I agree. Here the player is too over the top and playful with it. It needs a certain pessimistic mellowness to it that the original had.
How are you getting these scores!
Beautifully presented. Great ensemble. This music is so exciting and so much fun to play. Who would not love it?
Great ! Thanks very much for uploading the score. This music made a massive impression on me when the film was first released...particularly the very opening, the mood of which I lifted for my Cello and Piano piece of 1976 😁 What a talent Bernard Hermann was.
OMG!! This is the most incomprehensible piece of wind music I've ever heard. No form. No melody. All it does it blindly follow the dodecaphonic system to the nth degree. It makes no sense at all.
It has all kinds of forms, Sonata form, Lied form, Rondo form etc. Melodies are the tone rows which you will recognize after a few listens or studying. But hey, this is not music for the millions nor easy listening. If that is what you are looking for this is not for you.
Act III N 10 Imprecionante😍
I'm really happy to see (and hear) Herrmann on this channel. He was definitely one of the greatest.
Richte mich gott
Note the quote of the principal motive from "Psycho" at the very end... A masterstroke in itself.
fantastic
What a phenomenal piece of music 😲.
Wonder if John Williams took some inspiration from this for his "A.I." score (one of my favorites of his) - similar mood, sonorities, and polytonal treatments. They were friends, so probably.
Where is Waldo? you can easily replace with find the quotes in Williams' scores. That guy knows the music repertoire inside out. I bet you can write a thesis on the subject.
David Sanborn is the soloist, unmistakable sound. Passed very recently, Rest In Peace.
The recording I used of the City of Prague Orchestra didn't list the name of the saxophonist nor conductor.
@@bartjebartmans Yeah, I tried searching for the credits but found nothing. If it's not Sanborn then the player should get an award for a perfect impersonation. Probably one of those uncredited appearances that famous artists sometimes do for fun.
@@filmscorefreak Steve Gregory came up in my mind, the awesome saxophonist from George Michael's Careless Whisper. But I am not a saxophone expert.
@@filmscorefreak The first thing you learn as a studio saxophonist is how to imitate Sanborn 🙂
@@DavidLovrien lol could be the case here, but i've heard many sax players and there's always something that gives them away that it's not him, can't find it here. Also thinking that a lesser-known player would want to make sure that their name shows up in the credits. But becomes kind of a game when they're famous, kind of like Van Halen showing up in a Michael Jackson song. In any event, fun conversation!

Interesting subtitle “orchestra with obligato Saxophone” fits many other pieces well, but who is the soloist here? 🙏
Nice program note, and glad to have the score alongside
scared for tmea😞
The main theme is so main and overwhelming that it subdues all that jazz...
Absolutely INCREDIBLE. i love this piece to death
I loved this theme more than the movie! Didnt know it was by Herrmann!
it was his last film score. If i recall correctly, he finished the last recording session and died that same day at night of a heart attack.

This is so great; keep the BH coming........
Bernard Herrman was amazing. His list of films is jaw dropping. North by Northwest is one of my favourites. This composer truly had it down pat when it came to pacing and balancing the music with the film. Brilliant composer.
Thank you. I never would have thought of listening to this work if you hadn't posted it with the score.
Has anyone else ever noticed how he loosely quotes the Marriage of Figaro overture at 32:25? A hilariously genius joke to segue the piece’s home stretch
The key is C minor.
Thank you very much for this discovery, very beautiful and captivating. This cantata of Hermann deserves indeed to be widely known and performed. Reminds me of Delius but with his own strong musical language.

Oh god, I've been looking for this score for years! Thanks!
No way!
This is great! Thanks for posting this. I like how Herrmann wrote the harps in different keys in some movements. I'm sure there's a lot of theory (that i don't understand) in the choices he made there. Whatever he did, it's fantastic.
