So I actually had a roommate in college who was from Verhoyansk (Верхоянск).
I remember he asked my help with his thesis. I think it was about social consequences of drinking alcohol.
I helped him out.
So as a reward he brought 2 bottles of vodka as thanks.
I was like - uh.. okay, thanks dude!
He's like: "No, you you didn't understand - you're going to drink this with me."
With little hope I asked: "Sometime next week?.."
- Today!
- Oh boy..
As we were drinking those 2 bottles he was telling me about his life in Verhoyansk. As a fun way to live through the winter they would frequently gather large gangs and fight each other (hand-to-hand). Sometimes just noses or ribs were broken, but occasionally someone was seriously hurt or killed.
I was like, so what was police doing? And he's like, well we never rat on each other. Telling about others in those fun mass fights to cops was considered one of the the shittiest things a person can do.
Also his family seriously worked mostly in summer with hunting and such, spend weeks to hunt animals for furs and leather while in winter there wasn't much to do.
P.S.: after we finished those two bottles - half a liter each, he decided that it was not enough for such a good evening and we went to buy another bottle. Honestly I have no idea why I went. So we finished the 3rd bottle and next day was the worst hangover of my life. As for him - he just went to work, like no big deal. Those Siberians are scary.

The real question is why the frozen over hell do people still live there?
People hate change
Look up "Oymyakon 60 minutes", a journalist went out there to answer that very question.
I think the reality is that it's their home. They're used to it and leaving would mean destroying their ancestral legacy. No doubt some of them get out though.
The even realler question is why do people decide to move there.
RileysFilms people would move their just so they can have the bragging rights of saying “hey, I live in the coldest town on earth.”
the real question is who the heck decided that was a good place to settle and start a community.
One word answer: Russian
Vodka freezes at -26.95’ C so you would have to put your vodka in the oven
@Emils not sure about that. But other substances in vodka can freeze which buts the freezing point higher
@Emils Shouldn't you be aware of the fact that typical vodka only contains about 40% ABV?
Also, any fluid freezes at some point ... the freezing point of pure ethanol is -114°C (-173°F)
Actually, we are using this fact to be even more drunk. You see, we will find some kind of meta pinch bar, hold it vertically above the bucket and spill some chemicals with alcohol down it outdoors. After a few iterations you will have all the deadly stuff frozen to the bar and a pure alcohol remaining in the bucket. You only need to mix it with water to create your deserved free vodka
1 everything can freeze
That's physically impossible, didn't you have middle school science? 0 Kelvin and Absolute Zero ring a bell?
Have a friend living in Yakutsk (which is really near by) and she says that -30 is ok, but -50 is a bit hard to handle. Lol 🙂🙂🙂

And here I am freezing at 10ºC lmao

Ok so for the dog years thingy.
Convert 1 year to dog years, in this case I used a pug so 15 dog years.
2.7 x 10^-5 = 0.000027 dog years
1 year = 15 dog years
0.000027 dog years
=0.0000018 of a year
=0.000657 days
=0.015768 hours
=0.94608 min
=56.7648 seconds
So skip about 56 seconds to skip the technical part!
Well traditionally dog years were regarded as 1/7 of a human year, and if you use that definition it's roughly 2 minutes and 2 seconds, and if you skip from 2:18 it takes you to 4:20. ROFLMAO WEED AMIRITE. Also the benefits of fossil fuels greatly outweigh the costs, change my mind.
@@ChiccinTendies Fossil fuels do not offer a major benefit in electricity production for which they are still used, as they can and should be replaced with nuclear powerplants, the safest, cleaner and cheapest source of energy. The cost of excessive use of fossil fuels being great environmental damages, the destruction of biodiversity, air polution, as well as beign a relatively finite ressource makes it actually the worse source of energy we have. And while it is the only one for transportation, with the improvements in battery tech and efficieny it could be neutered or even eliminated.
and in case you were trolling i guess I'll r/woosh myself out.
@@diegosanchez894 Environmentalists are also opposed to nuclear energy for the most part. It is capable of producing reliable energy but in terms of the infrastructure we just don't have it yet, so trying to restrict fossil fuels before we have a cheap, reliable, accessible alternative is quite frankly suicide. Fossil fuels are still the only energy source that are able to produce cheap, realiable, and accessible energy to benefit billions of people at once. As for for resource depletion, fracking has extended our ability to extract oil for at least over a hundred years, which was really the only fossil fuel at risk of being exhausted, and we are constantly looking for new and better ways to extract those resources from the ground. As for climate change, yes humans have caused an increase in temperature, but it's not the majority of it, the majority being the natural temperature cycle the Earth has been going through for millions of years, also climate-related deaths have been plummeting since the advent of the industrial era and even into the last couple decades, purely because of the technology and infrastructure that cheap, reliable, accessible energy has provided for us. So yes, the climate might be more condusive to malaria, but as you know, malaria went extinct in first world countries because of the technology we had access to to defeat it. Another little known fact about the greenhouse effect is that it is a diminishing effect or a logarithmic effect, in other words, the rate of heat trapped by co2 decreases the more co2 is already present in the atmosphere. A much more underrated effect of co2 is the fertilizer effect, which has produced a significant increase in plant growth around the world due to the fact that, as even a 4th grader knows, plants need co2 to live. I am perfectly fine with using other sources of energy, as long as they are allowed to compete evenly on the free market. That means no subsidies and no carbon taxes. Fossil fuels may have costs, but nobody looks at the benefits. They have been the number one biggest cause of human advancement and continue to pull poorer countries out of poverty by being accessible enough to be used in developing nations.
@@ChiccinTendies regarding the nuclear energy infratructure: the US actually uses more nuclear energy than other countries, but the fear around it has made its implementation hard, and I believe it is in our best interest to make the transition as quickly as possible, without affecting our energy output. Saying humans only contribute a small part to climate change is simply false, as natural climate cycles make a very small and slow change to the average temperature. And while deaths due to air polution might have been decreasing, there are almost 2.5 million deaths because of it yearly (WHO), whch is more even per terawatt than all of the other energies combined. And sure, plants grow better but how much does that really matter if you consider the fact that that can also happen with genetic editing (which I fully endorse), and that a warmer climate facilitates the spread of diseases, that could wipe out all the plants that actually interest us, since we tend to use one species for food. Now taking into consideration all these massive risks to the environment and even society (50% of the population lives near water, so rising sea levels are an enourmous economic concern) there should be an incentive to corporation to move towards cleaner sources, namely nuclear and even renewables, and the fastest way to incentivize a body whose main purpose are profits, is to reduce those profits through a carbon tax, and, if possible, a potential tax cut in the case of adoption of the cleaner enery sources.

I remember seeing a video about one of these two towns a while back and remember three details. First, the valley the town is in acts like a heatsink increasing the cold, second: artificial materials aren't warm enough so fur is actually necessary and lastly to overcome the frozen fuel/battery issue they literally light a fire under the car...
I live in Minnesota and the temperature have dipped down to around -35F, and even just walking to my car from a store has been frigid I can’t imagine what that would feel like

Alright so a dog year is 7 years for one of our years, meaning 365/7 = 52 roughly.
52 (days) × (2.7×10^−5) ( the math he told us to use) = 0.001404
That means we need to skip .001404 years forward, and .001404×24 is how many hours we have to go forward, or .033696 (hours) × 60 = 2.02 , and 2.02× 60 is 121 seconds, meaning we have to skip from 2:21 (the time he said to skip) to 4:23 to skip the "boring" stuff :)

"...an average of 14.7 pounds per square inch... or about 1 kilogram per square centimetre."
Speak of useless units... Can somebody tell Sam that, in the civilised world, we measure air pressure in Milibar/Hectopascal?
@@rjfaber1991 because physics
*14.7 pounds*
THAT THAT USAMERICANS
This isn't even correct, I like that the creator likes to make jokes about everything, especially metric vs imperial but this has gone too far.
Not only is he wrong (1 kg/cm2 = 14.22psi) but kg/cm2 is not even SI units, the SI units from pressure are N/m2 which is Pacsals, which still no body uses in metric land, but instead use hectopascals or millibar.
Not to mention that no one in any field of physics or engineering would use centimeters for anything, ever.
As one of my school teachers taught me long ago, "the only people who use centimeters are dressmakers".
Centimeters need to be banned from use as they are totally inferior to millimeters and anyone who uses them should go to prison.
@@MegaGouch Astrophysics mostly uses (or at least "used" when I was in college) cgs not mks units. (So energy in ergs rather than joules, for instance.) I never heard an adequate explanation, but since units are arbitrary anyway, it really doesn't matter. If you can't convert from one system of units to another, physics might not be for you. (The engineering school is right over there. 8-) )
I'll note that the kg is a measure of mass, not force. And mass/area is not a measure of pressure. You might want to use kg/cm^2 in some sort of fluid dynamics sectional density problem, I suppose, but it's not commonly useful.

If you're wondering, the dog years account to 1 minute.
Damn it, I tried calculating it and it resulted in 2 minutes for me.
Same
@@jacobandersen9912 I think I calculated it right. There's a common myth with dog owners that 7 dog years = 1 human year. I did the maths, and the 2.7x10^-5 is equal to around 14 dog minutes, or 2 human minutes. Since the actual skip was just 1 minute (and he later confessed that the 1-minute wait was equal to 7 dog minutes), I think it's arguable that he just threw in the wrong number (the right one being 1.35*10^-5) to make us comment more.
No so incorrect
It’s 58 seconds
@@lucasplz2429 It's not so much a myth as a convenient developmental and ageing reference.
I think it's worth pointing out the airport situation for the town: there is a closer airport in the town of Batagay, however it's still over an hour and a half away and flights only go to Yakutsk. Apparently Verkhoyansk has an airport itself as well, but I could find next to no info about it. While it's pretty remote in that sense, it's not a 400 mile drive to the nearest flights.
A more interesting video (maybe 3/4 as interesting) might be explaining why people live there.
They were born there. Most of them are descendants of deer herder tribes.
Not going to lie, a place like that, a place where you _fear_ to tread, is often appealing to me. I can definitely see the allure of it. I say they are better off there than in this so-called "civilized" society. I mean, you _have_ seen the news, right? Why would they want any part of *_that_* ?!
