    I have spent a while contemplating making this video, rotating between laughing at the ridiculous concept, and contemplating the immensely substantive historical, innovative, and imperialistic impact.. of bird poop. Creating this video was a whirlwind for me, and I hope that you get a similar "What?!" feeling when watching. From now on, *I will be occasionally highlighting some of my favorite comments within the first hour of a new video being live* . Today, I am both laughing and mourning with *BK's Bullets* over this comment: _"Bites into sandwich, cue the montage of animals pooping!"_ Sorry dude.

It's not just an "idea" a CZcamsr had. Guaranteed most, if not all of these subjects had many full length docs made about them before CZcams even existed. Is only the first one to make a video on a specific subject the only one that's allowed to? If that were the case, this platform would be absolute garbage. It's not about who did it first, it's about who did it better. Ideas don't mean s*** if you don't execute it well.

    I'm extremely surprised the video didn't mention gunpowder which at the time required guano for its manufacturing which obviously made it incredibly important in strategic terms, making guano become even more critical and than fertilizer.

      Yes, try making some about former territories like my country, the Philippines, and Cuba... since you haven't let go of Puerto Rico and Guam yet. It always fascinates us Filipinos when some Americans from the mainland States are not totally aware that both Cuba and the Philippines were under American jurisdiction for decades, some even didn't know the the Philippines is an actual country in the Far East.

      @@flashsssky In Peru there was not much labor, so the "Chinese immigration law" was passed. Some data indicate that 100,000 Chinese workers, called "Culies", were brought in. It was these workers who, deceived by the promise of work, were forced to work on the islands in poor conditions.

    That building at 4:32 is at Tigre train station, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I used to take that train on summers to visit the tiny islands in Tigre when I was growing up.

    If you ever want to see what one of these islands looks like today go to Nauru (just south of the equator in the Western Pacific). It is fascinating. Surprised this video didn't include pictures from there just to show what it looks like.

    Small correction: The inventor of artificial fertilizer was Kristian Birkeland, a famous Norwegian scientist, not German. He is also well known for his research on the northern lights:)

      He's referring to German scientist Fritz Haber of the Haber-Bosch process. The invention of this process was so impactful that it's still the primary production of ammonia to this day. The Birkeland-Edye process came about around the same time, but Haber-Bosch is what we think of as the game-changer that reduced demand for guano.

    Really like all of these videos, Johnny! Since you have been doing videos recently about the borders of the U.S. and how they came to be, I was wondering you considered to make a video on Alaska. What is the overall history behind it? What deals were made? It's rather odd that it is disconnected from the contiguous U.S. and bordered by Canada and with Russia nearby. Thanks!

      To give you a cliff notes version. Russia did not like the British and knew it was only a matter of time before the British would try to size Alaska via Canada so Russia who was an ally of the US at the time sold Alaska to America to keep it out of British hands and to pay off the debts it had accumulated due to the Crimea war.
