    I've got a friend who is in the Royal Navy and was stationed in Norway for a few months, he said that the day he realised the sheer mass of the US military and its budget was when he left his barracks for only a day and when he came back there was a massive US camp/ base set up right next to him. He couldn't believe just how fast all the equipment and barracks had been formed together although often speaks of the mental funding of the US.

      And remember it's because of US that friendly Euros had a chance against Germany. We win.
      We are the champions of the world because we have focused on itel and logistics almost from day one. #Sonofavet.

    I'm sure you already know this Johnny but there is a huge court case about a hit and run incident near a military base here in the UK. The victim was a British citizen and the accused perpetrator was the wife of an American who was stationed at a base. She fled citing diplomatic immunity and thus hasn't faced trial. Highlights the grey area of jurisdiction with regards to American bases.

      She was a diplomats wife I think this says more about how the US views other countries laws rather than bases. Even though the husband had diplomatic immunity not everything you do should be immune to laws expecially in countries which have justice systems that are similar to ours

Not all people who are “diplomats” are there for relations between two countries

    Hey @johnnyharris You missed one in Poland, Redzikowo - it is the most important military base for EU because of it's anti rocket system. I was actually a student there in middle school, the base is right behind it lol.

      I was stationed at lajes air base Portugal...aka azores island. 2005-07. Small but active base. Joint base. Host nation Portuguese.
      1 out of 4 bases I was stationed at. Not to mention tdy training locations.

      this is america, no one gets on any "government watch list" for being an investigative journalist. most of these guys have friends and family in the government or have worked for the government themselves. don't know what country you guys are from but in the US the government is not above the law.

    Just came across your video although it was done a while ago. I was a transportation officer in the US Air Force. Actually there is a rather sophisticated system to identify every facility and ships at sea! Your count is about 100 short.
    Some of these locations are part of communication networks. Some are intelligence gathering sights. Some are used to preposition equipment 'just in case'. Some are early warning facilities, like the one you mentioned in Greenland.

    Very interesting. While serving with the US Air Force in the 1950s. I visited a few bases outside of the US. Also while serving with the Army in the 1960s. Thanks for the info. You have given me plenty of meat to record part of my life in the military to my grandchildren and great grandchildren. My own children are not aware also. PTL.

      He should really, at least make a list with the source that revealed its location. I was deployed to the Middle East before, and can already tell some of those dots don't have a US facility on them but are rather that of the host nation. Or it's a military reservation that between temporary exercises is just an empty field.

    When doing dots on a map, it helps to have them outlined by black or white... Colorblindness makes it hard to see that color you used over a land colored map!

    You must also calculate those bases that are officially of the hosting country but are actually used by the US military for example the Aviano air base in Italy

    I have worked on US bases abroad and currently live privately in a European country that has US bases. While some people resent the presence of US military, it is rarely mentioned. They almost always say that it doesn't bother them personally, and that it helps provide work for the locals and injects a ton of money into the local economy. Some have actually complained when the bases were shut down, because it killed the local economy. So, I am sure we can find the same pros and cons going back to the Roman Empire, too.

      Thank you. I'm from Germany, from the North so no bases around me (I really dont know what the dots are supposed to be, like theres supposed be one near Lübeck? News to me, we were in the British zone post WW2, Wikipedia also lists obly bases in the west and south where the US zone used to be) but I did hear about how some towns were nervous as fuck when Trumo threatened to pull out. The far right claims we are occupied as if it's against our will but in reality, it's like you said: Many don't care or are in favor.

    I was at a basketball tournament and the schedule said my team was playing a German team (I’m from Californian and the tournament was in Las Vegas). When we walked in and saw the team, we were surprised bc they were all American and spoke no German and had no accent. We later found out it was a team of kids that lived on a American military base in Germany.

      I had very similar just reversed experience. We took part in the European scout Jamboree and were kinda suprised that there was a group of US boy-scouts. Yep, inhabitants of the military bases in Germany and yes, they didn´t speak any German...

      About ten years ago I drove around Europe for a few months. Saw multiple vehicles - mostly in Germany, but to a lesser extent in other countries too - with license plates from various US states. Apparently, foreign-based US servicemen and members of their families ship their American vehicles over there in containers.

    I think the craziest part of most of our bases Is that they're in places we ravaged before. Okinawa for example, we destroyed that place & not to long ago I had a buddy stationed there. That's wild to think about.

      Part of the treaties that ended the war was partial US occupation (for many reasons) and they are free to ask us to leave whenever they want, but they’d rather have our base than be a part of China.

    Excellent video. Thank you for creating. I grew up in Bremerton, WA near the Puget Sound naval shipyard. Which also includes a toxic Superfund site. (I have photos if you are interested). I’ve also been a military dependent. I lived in Okinawa while my husband was stationed on Futenma. My son was born at Camp Lester. Have stories about that experience. Okinawa is an occupied colony. Brutal. Yet so was PSNS. Though they provide jobs the pollution is horrific. They just leave it.

    Do you know what makes the American military such an aggressive fighting war machine? On every base and ship around the world they installed the Taylor C602 Ice Cream Maker ( the same one used by McDonalds ) and it never works and it really really pisses them off.

    Living on a military installation one thing I can see is that the military population largely supports the surrounding economy and boosts it a lot.
    Varying from just food, drinking, houses/rent, barbers, clothing alterations, and general shopping these area around larger installations end up making decent amounts of money from all the military personnel and their spouses that live and shop in the area.
    On the negative side this military population also brings much more traffic as tons of people are trying to go to and from the same area every day. Also depending on the base they cause a lot of surrounding noise pollution whether it be aircraft, explosions, helicopters, etc.
    There are both negatives and positives to living next to military installations

      It’s not solely a US thing.

    I was living in Egypt awhile back and my best friend's father was an engineer in the US navy there. We used to go to the military base and man, it was like I skipped flying a plane and took a camel to America. We had dunkin donuts, subway, grocery stores with only American products and only takes dollars. The houses and building complex on the bases were so different than Egypt's architecture that you really felt confused when you went back and forth in and out of the bases. There were even cars only found in America like mustangs and acuras.

      USA is exceptional. Before WW2 we (the Hungarians) tried to join the Allies but the USA told us they don't want to upset the Germans. After WW2 the USA told us if we pay a bunch of money they make sure Hungary will be a democracy. We paid the money and they left the country leaving it for the Soviet Union. :)
      Also in 1956 they promissed support if we rebell against the Russians, we did it and they took over Suez, the americans knew Russia can't intervene in Suez if they have to intervene in Hungary.
      You have to love them, they are just so dishonest and sometimes evil while they preach about freedom and democracy.

      That is another thing. They used to publish this. The last report I ever saw on it, as a Contracting Officer, was around 2005. At that time we outspent by almost double, the next highest spending government in the world. It was astronomical and it has increased over a thousand fold since then.

    I live in Bakersfield CA, a city that has no major bases, but it is in the middle of all of them, like you can’t drive two hours in ANY direction without hitting an air base, besides going south towards LA.
    Anyways, I don’t live close to an air base, but almost every day I get F-35s passing directly over my house at a low altitude going towards Lemoore, about 120 miles away. It can be very annoying for most people, I personally love jet fighters so I don’t mind.

    In case anyone is wondering, that Northern base in Greenland is called Thule Air Base. It was established during the Cold War and is part of the Distant Early Warning or DEW Line for detecting incoming missiles.

    Hey I am from Germany and I am a Bit scared because they are a lots of big military bases all across my country (I live 5km away from Rammstein in a small village(Erzenhausen)) and if a war happened Tease bases are priority targets vor other countries that have like Nuklear weapons ore something,
    I believe a war is unlikely but the situation with Ukrainian and Russland is a bit scary

    In Greece, you missed the most infamous one, "Souda Bay", on the island of Crete. The largest and most prominent naval base for the United States and NATO in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Although designated as a Greek base officially, or as NATO, everybody here knows it's an American base, heavily used for all the Middle East operations.

      I use Crete as a base for a watch tower in my world map for Age of Empires 2, and any cavalry passing through Egypt can get hit by it. :-)

      Having military bases scattered around the world is greatly offseted by the introductions of modern weaponry. Stealth bomber, stealth submarine ultra fast missiles in a synchronize attack can neutralize all these at once.
