Hawaii is quite literally just a bunch of volcanos

They're not brave enough
They're not stupid enough.
As soon as I clicked on the video, I realized exactly what it was going to be about. I've actually *been* to Plymouth-- back before it was destroyed, of course. My parents used to have a vacation house on Montserrat, and I spent quite a bit of time on the island throughout my childhood. I was 9 years old when the volcano first erupted, and my parents were forced to sell the house; it wasn't in the exclusion zone, but it was close enough to the boundary that proper upkeep of the place was impossible. I still miss that island. My childhood memories of it were that it was a lush green paradise full of really sweet, kind, welcoming people, and I loved visiting. I haven't been back since, and even if I did, I'm not sure if it will ever be quite the same as it was when I knew it. It breaks my heart to see places I went as a kid now looking like the surface of the moon. :(
As much as I mourn my own loss, though, I feel really bad for the islanders. Before the volcano erupted, the island was hit very hard by Hurricane Hugo in 1989. The island was *just* beginning to recover when the volcano woke up.
„Places I went to as a kid now looking like the surface of the moon” … did your parents own property in many more similar locations?
@@michaelwisniewski6047 No, they owned the one vacation home. When I said 'places' (plural), I meant there are a bunch of specific places on the island that I remember visiting, and they've all since been destroyed or buried in ash. I have fond memories of the market, the war memorial, the sugar mills, the hotel next door that used to have a steelpan band playing each night. I've seen photos of how Plymouth looks now, and they're really difficult for me to look at.
Volcanoes do often have a ring of extremely fertile soil around them, so it's actually not that uncommon for settlements to spring up nearby.

I was very lucky last year to be able to fly over the island and the capital in a helicopter with work. One of the best experiences of my life. We even got so close to the volcano you could smell the sulphur. Fantastic video, the shots of Plymouth really brought back memories of that flight.
Another vestigial piece of the British Empire nearly suffered the same fate in 1961. The volcano on Tristan da Cunha blew that year, and the island's only village, Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, was narrowly spared. The population first went to South Africa, then on to the UK, where they remained until 1963.
