    According to Toyota/Lexus, the 2000 3.0 V6 is a "Non Interference" engine. Same goes for your Toyota Sienna. If only all manufacturers that used timing belts instead of chains would have been nice enough to at least make their engines "Non Interference".

      If only motorists were smart enough to refuse to buy cars with a rubber timing chain and the water pump inside the timing cover, automakers would quit using them and would return the water pump to OUTSIDE the timing cover.

    Nice to find a mechanic who understands about timing belts and interference motors. A couple years ago when decent used cars were impossible to find at a reasonable price, I found a 2000 Chrysler 300m with only 105k miles in beautiful shape, dirt cheap. It was bought new and well maintained by a little old lady (really) who was just too old to drive anymore. i wanted something considerably newer but pickings were slim. Manual said to change timing belt and water pump at 100k. My mechanic (he's the one who found me the car) really didn't want to replace them. Said if it ain't broke don't fix it. Finally convinced him to do the work. I switched to synthetic oil, changed trans filter and fluid. It runs like a dream and I'm thinking I'm just going to keep it because it might last another 100k. I've only put about 3500 miles on it since I bought it.

    I have sort of a love-hate relationship with timing belts. I had an 83 escort and being too cheap to put on a new water pump the first time I replaced the belt I had to do it a few months later because the water pump went. It was a pain but I got where I could do it pretty quick after a while. Keep the good stuff coming Kenny.

    I guess it's easier to put the belt on than manually closing each set of valves and doing a leak down test . You probably would pull the plugs and look in each cylinder and use the bore scope to see the valves closed . Either way the front cover is off to turn the cam .

    I have the 1MZ-FE engine, and the belt was barely hanging onto a few teeth that it had left on a belt well over its mileage. I caught the issue as the VVT system was clanking enough for me to check out the belt, and I happen to catch it right on time before it slipped. Thing is, after buying the kit and timing it all with all the marks including the ones that were on the belt to aid in timing, I get no compression on 3 cylinders that are accessible on the radiator side. My question is, can the VVT system, if out of whack, even beyond those alignment marks on that gearing, could that give me little to no compression. I hear the range of the VVT is about 40 degrees... If that is true, then perhaps that side of the motor has a busted VVT, hence the clanking, but it shows me that the marks are indeed, in timing with the cam gear. I do know that looks can be deceiving, certainly someone has had this issue before, with a busted VVT system that wont allow the car to be in timing.

    I refuse to buy an engine that uses a rubber timing chain, and I refuse to buy an engine that has the water pump inside the timing gear cover. That's why I still drive a 73 GMC and a 54 Chrysler HEMI. No catalytic converters to steal, no computers to force me to bring them to a shop, no smog checks, lots of room, and in the Chrysler, a nice soft ride.

    I'm curious how you synced the crank bolt with the camshafts after the belt breaks. As you know there are 2 rotations on the crank for 1 rotation of the cam, so there is a 50% chance that when all the timing marks are aligned you may be off by 180 degrees, or can either rotation of the crank work? (I suspect it's the latter)

    • @ferrarif174
      @ferrarif174 Před 11 měsíci +1

      no matter, just put the crank on the mark , and the cam on their mark.. (make sure to to look for the dot on the outer part of the crank sprocket not the inner)

    I have a question I need a answer for asap and I think your the man that can answer it for me.
    Couple weeks ago my Highlander with 3.3L interference engines timing belt let go. I’ve secured a used belt to do the exact same thing you did in this video. Maybe I’ll get lucky too.
    Since my crank pulley/ balancer takes 2 full revolutions to get the cam pulley back to TDC how do I know where to set my crankshaft? How do I know if in 360° off or not when installing the belt?

    • @phoenixmistertwo8815
      @phoenixmistertwo8815 Před 6 měsíci

      Line up the crank TDC mark, to the mark on the engine, and line the cams, to the mark on their backing plate, and you will be set. If you happen to purchase the Mitsuboshi belt, it has marks on the belt that help this along with timing, but you still have to physically match the marks for each pulley like normal, and then use belt marks to ensure you arent a few teeth out.

    Yes, you're lucky if it's a Toyota engine & the timing belt snaps because they're an interference engine but you're not so lucky of it's a Nissan or a Subaru engine which is.
    My brother bought a 2000.model Subaru Forester which had valve work done to the EJ20J engine because the old owner couldn't afford the expensive timing belt replacement for that engine since the kit alone costs $1000 AUD on average & that's before the labour is charged on the belt replacement.

      It is an interference motor , but I've had about a 60% success rate with interference motors not being damaged . There really is no way to tell until you do the belt. I will say this though, when you go to line up the marks , pay attention to when you rotate the crank and the cams so you don't contact the valves upon assembly. You may have to rotate the crank slightly or the cams slightly to get timing where it needs to be . Let me know how you make out !
