580 BHP TechArt Porsche 911 Turbo (996) - Better, Or Worse Than Standard?

- I love the looks of the 996 generation 911 turbo, but the drive of them always left me a little disappointed. Today I am driving a TechArt modified 911 Turbo to see if this is one car which is improved with mods.

Last time I was this early, BMW was making elegant cars and Mercedes Benz was building over-engineered tanks.

so in the 70s?
I have a 996 Turbo S. Added a titanium x pipe exhaust and Cobb stage 2 tune. 540hp. Hard to beat. Cheers.
Loud. Powerful. Head-turning. Stylish. Devisive.
Yep: that's a hell of a shirt.
Never got on with my 996tt despite the fact it was a 530bhp x50 with dms upgrades. Just too vague. They're a daily driver, not a toy.
Naa mate I got one and it's lambo killer not a daily
Vague? I find the chassis and steering extremely responsive, engaging and characterful. The engine feels hard as nails, but is lacking character, but more enjoyable than modern turbo engines.
Hi James love your channel - so much I recently bought a 996 Turbo in seal gray - absolutely love it
I used to have a seal grey 2003 with almost 900 bhp. Such an amazing car. Congrats and enjoy!
My 996tt made over 730 all wheel hp and 700 ft lbs of torque to the wheels. So roughly 900 bhp. Let me tell you, that was the most fun I've ever had driving a car. Just brutal acceleration. Great video!
Sounds scary fast I like it
How much did that cost?
Your look screams James May... the personality screams Jeremy Clarkson. And that’s just awesome
Just as long as his driving style doesn't scream Richard Hammond, else he'll soon run out of review car offers! 🤣🤣🤣
My all time favourite 911 Turbo!!!😍
I use my 996 turbo for European road trips , derestricted autobahns and alpine roads make these cars come alive.
My friends 996 turbo was tuned by Nine Excellence. Possibly the quickest car I’ve ever sat in / driven. Comparable to the feeling I get on my litre sports bike especially beyond motorway speeds. Having said that I drove a standard version in manual, the turbo lag is just so charming, the power piles on and your smile gets wider and wider!
The intro theme finished and my first thought was "I want that shirt!". I had to restart the video around the two minute mark, it was that distracting. Love it!
Love the shirts Jay.... They help make the video's... Also like your presenting style. Keep up the great work/content.
Excellent video. I've been on the fence about getting a 996 TT and these videos really sold me. I love the old 996 driving experience but I always wanted more power and better reliability. 996's are such an underrated experience.
Your builder sound comparison is the sort of thing that sets you apart from everyone else!
The tyres are VERY likely to be at the root of the handlingfeel issue and a switch to Michelin PS4s will probably improve things no end. The wheels won't make that difference and the suspension seems pretty normal (aside from those bushings!).
The friend party analogy was spot on !! Ha ha ha ha !! Top video!!
Great vid James! Oh your mum wants her curtains back please!🤩😜✌️
Love the analog driving appeal of this car. I concur with the leave it "stock looking" and go beast mode on the performance goodies..oh and maybe some perfectly offset bbs wheels and proportionally sized and equipped brakes please!!
I appreciate the boldness of your loud shirts. Very 911 turbo 😁
Another new intro clip?!?! I do like this one I’ll admit it. I liked. The other recent intro too.
‘An uninvited house guest, but he has bought loads of drugs, so you’ll let him stay anyway’ brilliant! You put Clarkson to shame with that one, great review, very easy watch.
Well done Jay, this is exactly what I was referring to in my comment when you did your original 996 turbo review. An exhaust coupled with the right tune and a properly dialed in suspension make the 996tt's the best I've ever driven from Porsche. Glad you took my advice and cheers from across the pond pal. Keep up the great work and congratulations on the 550 Maranello 🤙
Thanks Norm :)
Completely agree Norm. No one should be driving a 996tt without a few updates. Mine was an absolute monster. I absolutely love 996tts.
Brilliant vid, spot on that it transforms the car ( I have one with 500 bhp). Learn to change gear though James!
I have crossed the continent with mine and it was great. I’ve done practically everything with it and I love it. Great video!
996s have started growing on me lately and being able to extract that kind of performance makes them rather tempting!
Well, move quickly - I just bought a really lovely example for 26,000 - bargain but for how much longer?
Just drive a 996 c2 today my first 911 and decided within a 100 yards I’m buying one

@@rjdavies1982 nice sounds like you got a good deal 👍
I have a 996TT and I think your review sums it up nicely!
THANKS JAMES, HONEST AND INFORMED REVIEW OF MY TREASURED 996T
Lovely car mate.sounds fantastic too.
Appreciate the complement. Read a few of the posts here, I cant for the life of me see why people dont like the interior. It's functional, and surely the important part is how it drives and makes you feel. I never get in this car and think the interior is naff, the seats are an excellent quality leather, really comfortable, and look nearly new after 20 yrs, which is remarkable. With all that torque and horsepower available, its a thrill ride. Thanks again. Oh, I actually really like the TechArt wheels too!!
The comments from a lot of the people are always quite amusing. James reviewed my 996 and some of the comments were from people who had clearly never sat in a 996 or paid any attention to the video just jumped on the 996 hating bandwagon.
You also get 997 owners who like to talk down the 996 probably to justify to themselves why they paid so much more for a car which is really just a facelift of the 996.
Your car looks and sounds great. Ignore the negative comments, they probably drive much worse cars and are just jealous.
andrew warner - Owner of a 996 C4S , I agree 200 % !... 👍
That's a lot!! I love the looks of the 996 C4S, one of the best looking Porsches of all time.
awesome car
James u had me Lmao in this 🤣 The builder noise and House party guest had me crying 🤣🤣
incredible techart kit and mods! I dont think they make these kits anymore
I've owned mine for 11 years or so. They need coilovers, exhaust, more boost, and an updated shifter. Once done you have a brilliant driving car.
Jay raided the 70s for that intro music and took a shirt whilst he was there.
I have never seen a single Tech Art addition that improves the look of the car. Despite the best intentions of owners in doing so, it just makes the car look like a Frankenstein.
That car doesn’t have much tech art stuff on it the rear wing is a Porsche wide body aero kit, not techart. Looks like it’s just the wheels that are Techart.
Your sound of sucking air comment, oh yes... another glorious video thank you.
I love the bit an uninvited guest, bringing loads of drugs to party.....and that bloody shirt!......Car is lovely an all!!
🤣🤣👍
The uninvited guest comparison, got me laughing, what a guy...
I wish they made the 996 turbo with the fried egg lights. I actually prefer that to the turbo headlights.
Worth watching to the end just for that closing titles theme music.
Love the shirt! 👍
That is some machine 😳 I like the wheels but the rest I’m not fussed about.
996 is an amazing car.
Have a 02 996 TT with a dealership conversion to a GT2 but still AWD. Who’d pay $5k just for a factory roll-bar (I know, not imported to USA that way) but it’s been tuned & gone through by EVOM & dynoed at 544HP & 606 torque with just the K24’s. People do mad things to these cars & if u keep up with the maintenance, will just last a very long time. Just did major refresh (tranny, all radiators & lines, clutch etc) and she’s tearing it up on the pavement. Still breaks the tires lose in 3rd gear.
Great car to own & drive
Love the new opening music
Questionable shirt = excellent review 🎉
Not sure I'd want more power, but I'd likely fit uprated suspension ie Ohlins coilovers.
Its funny, in the static shots the front splitter doesn't look too extreme. In the drive by shots it looks like it is scraping tarmac.
good platform the 996. Wouldn’t have 997 without it
Bought my turbo 996 from a neighbor in 2015. 55k USD. Upgraded exhaust, race intercoolers, bilstein coil overs, tuned, boot with larger static spoiler. Plus he gave me two pick up truck loads of extra rims, all the OEM parts, Porsche branded Reccaro Racing Seats, a belt bar and track belts. 22k miles on car. Turbos were leaking so I went to Vortex in Tampa and had them rebuilt with Mitsubishi race spindles and fans. No recognizable Turbo lag. Dyno’d @ 443HP at every wheel. (AWD) Manual of course. 443 at every wheel is like 550-600 at the crank. New Turbos are too big, too expensive and have too much technology. I’ll just keep driving my rocket ship with the offensive headlights.
911 Turbo's are the ultimate sleeper car. The 992 verison is so stealthy you have to know your Porsche's to tell it apart from the normal 992.
I'd say the rear fenders give one a little hint, lol
Jay wins 'Loud Shirt' of the year award 😀👍
Didn’t get on with my X50 996TT either...however I was coming from, and went right back to a real monster, 1997 Viper GTS. No comparison for me as a pure, analog driving experience. Vipers are still getting slept on...not for much longer I feel.
It is a C5,great looking car, especially in black.
I don’t think anyone forgot the motor was different just that the turbo prices always put them in a different league that made it more akin to 997 pricing and that was always a hard pill to swallow or for many just not even a pill that they can consider swallowing. That said I agree they’re underrated
Yes!!!
Immediately I found the most impressive thing was the aerodynamics - because, even with both windows slightly open, there was hardly ANY wind-noise whilst James was talking! Either that, or he has a RIDICULOUSLY LOUD voice and the audio and exhaust were turned down!!
He has a microphone on his chest which seems to do a good job of getting his voice to come out clearly without the background noise. He reviewed my car and it surprised me how easy he was to here on the review when sat next to him as he filmed there was a lot more engine noise in the cabin than was picked up by his microphone.
James knows what he's doing when it comes to equipment setup
Does the Porsche 996 turbo teacart have a secondary engine oil cooler?
The sound is 100 old thick Yellow Pages being ripped in two at the same time. Fiat Coupe 20VT’s do the same thing.
Damn James, your shirt is louder than the porsche.
Like the 996 turbo
I’d probably go for the 991 myself but it’s a great car
get a 996 turbo, while prices are still fairly low, remap it and you'll be getting v. close to 991 power, for half the price or less! Havent looked at the figures, but Ii reckon that's correct.
boxer tune and exhaust will get you roughly 100bhp on a 996tt. 991s make around 550-580bhp iirc, so you'd be short a bit. My 996tt made 731 all wheel hp, so roughly 900 bhp, and I can tell you, I would absolutely blow away 991 Turbos and Turbo S. All for about 1/3 the price of a 991 turbo.
Why are 90% of 996 porkers arctic silver? I was also a silver porker culprit, principally as I couldn’t find a decent one in any other shade at the time.
Seems the tech art is like a 4wd GT2 and that can’t be a bad thing. If the owner wants to sell, at the price it was worth 5 years ago, drop me a line 😉
Holy shit dude that shirt 😂😂😂
It makes a nice straight six sound...😁👍
Shame it’s not a straight six. It’s a flat six 😂
Check out Tiff Needell's original review and you'll see that the 996 Turbo is set up to understeer quite badly. I had one for 3 years but sold it because it was ultimately very frustrating: because of the aero it seems to get better with speed -big, illegal speeds - which means most of the time it's not at its best. Much preferred the C2 that replaced it.
Gotta love the very creative and suitable analogies in your videos 🤣
Why do porsche exhausts sound so flat as though they are blowing? I'm afraid I'm one of those people that just don't get the whole porsche thing, to me they have all been fugly and bland.... Give me an Aston Martin Vantage over any 911 any day.
Drive a 911 turbo and you'll understand
Gotta love the shirts
Sweet car. Mufflers sound lame, though. I love the rims and have them on my 996......they are killer!
Smack my Porsche UP!
There was no sport exhaust option on the 996tt.
that poor s2000 yearning for those toda parts in the back
When did you film this Jay?,the sun hasn't shone in the UK for at least 3 weeks.😦
@@Muzzaa today but I don't think he filmed it today. It's grim up north.
@@grahamsmith2022 It's usually grim up here, though :D
You need to move to the south east as it’s been lovely round here a lot over the last few weeks. A couple of wet days but other than that it’s been nice.
totally agree in speed yellow this would be a keeper !
I have an itch....should i scratch it? Through covid , prices have dropped markedly, fancy a x50 manual
Do it!
Trust me you won’t regret it.
Agreed, buy one! Best car I've driven, driven Astons, Ferraris too, and the 997 turbo. Bought my first Porsche in 1976! Although I'd like to buy a Ferrari 458 in a few yrs. Rechip it at DMS Southampton and you'll get around 540 BHP, that is as fast as most things on the road. The steering is terrific too, and its relatively small and agile compared to the 991 and 992 generation, which are big lumps. Will be a classic in 10 yrs, with the Pinkie Lai chassis design and those 'headlights!'.
henry boxer i have a 996 carrera 2 with 330 bhp, midly modified and has lsd. I just need more oomph
Agreed, do it! Best car I've ever owned. Want another so BADLY!!!
For some reason, having finished watching this video, I really fancy a Chinese takeaway tonight. 😕
Getting an Indian myself haha
Sir Shanks Actually I’m now ready for another video 😋
Went to the fish shop (babopbedop)
Went to the chip shop (babopbedop)
Went to the burger shop (babopbedop)
Didn't have the right stuff
Hey hey I want Chinese Takeaway
Hey Hey, woo woo woo
Often considered the 996 as a dream car and sat there on its own they look so great! However I also can't get over how bland the overall 911 shape is, its just not special enough to spend my hard earned cash on 🤷♂️
Great vid as always
+1 on Techart Wheels looking a bit garbage
Superb cars, the 996. As for more modern turbos being tinkered with, Have you heard of Sharkwerks.com they have been blazing a trail so bright in this field even Magnus Walker has been involved! Now, I don’t know if you’ve met him, but trust me when is say he brings A LOT to the party👍
Oh yes sir she can boogie 😂
You are as far from Boy racer as can get. Would be so funny, if you did an intro with a cap on, no explanation, get into a hot hatch old school. maybe a Nova lol. Max Power magazine on the passenger seat. and boot it around some bends. all with no commentary! Sooo funny. Then explain you just wanted to see what it was like, maybe even, "you know what I kind of like this". Injecting some Brit humour into these vids would be awesome. Life is kind of funny anyways! Have a nice day !
"I went in the standard one when it first came out" ........".My God, it was fast!".........".I can't imagine another 160 bhp!"
Parp in ell. What a porky sound. Parp parp as me and my friends like to to make the sound to exhaust notes. Ala big hemispherical v8s.
I have similar mods on my 996 Turbo. The former owner first brought it back to the Porsche dealer in Miami, and had them transform the car to a factory GT2 rather than trade it n take the depreciation hit
Then had the turbos upgrade to the K24’s. Evolution Motorsports did the rest & it makes same numbers as the one in your video. Freakin breaks the wheels lose in third gear when turbid get to Max most of 1.4bar. Amazing car for the value
Jerry did you upgrade the clutch and/or the injectors? I havent, so far, experienced any problems, but a Porsche mechanic advised me to do this? Your thoughts? I figure a competition clutch will just be tiring in traffic?
The lower the 996 the better.
£20k? Owner got rinsed 🤣
I’d sell it to you for 25
All I see is SHIRT.
Those 19" Techart rims are well known as being the worst wheel you can have for a turbo... horribly heavy - makes the car feel wooden. You should also know that there is no such thing as "turbo s" suspension... its exactly the same as a turbos, unless you specced the X73 suspension pack which was available on all cars. There is also no 'porsche sports exhaust'... whatevers on this is aftermarket. Also if that is the Techart short shift kit then it belongs in the bin - crappy design and horrible action. The bin is where mine went. Sorry to day but there are MUCH better examples of modified 996 turbos than this.
Sorry, I have all the bills, and it has a Turbo S original suspension, an Porsche Sports Exhaust, and the short shift is terrific, as James agrees in this video, and he's hard to please! If you threw yours in the bin there must have been a fault, or it was incorrectly fitted. The shift is a joy to use. The 19 inch rims do make it feel a tad heavier, but certainly not 'wooden'. Please research again, as most of your statements are either incorrect or misjudged. The Porsche Exhaust may be TechArt Sports Exhaust System, apologies. But the suspension is definitely exactly the same as the Turbo S, the exhaust sounds great too.
Miz, just checked the bills from TechArt. The exhaust is a Porshe Exhaust system, as is the Turbo S suspension which was fitted. So original spec. And to repeat, the TechArt short shift is a delight, amongst the best I've used, so I 've no idea why you binned yours! Thanks for other comments though. I LOVE THIS CAR, once you press the loud pedal it takes off!! 0-60 must be around 3.4 and 0-100 mph just under 8 secs, top speed 205mph. Not bad for a 20 yr old car.
Its very simple - there was no 'turbo s' suspension option. The turbo and turbo s had the exact same suspension from factory - there was one option available from Porsche which was the X73 code option which used different springs dampers, is -20mm and uses uprated engine mounts. I've driven a turboS with it and on UK roads it is sub-optimal.
Re the SSK, my car had the techart shifter fitted by my OPC... i doubt they messed the install up, but my experience is what it is.
P.s. if you are ever in London and want to compare shifters let me know ;o) enjoy your car - they are fantastic motors !
Dear Miz. I am VERY fussy, the shift is immaculate, as James agrees in this video. All my friends are Porsche nuts, and everyone remarks about how good and precise it is. So, someone hasnt installed it correctly, because mine is a thing of beauty! Have a great Xmas. Any thoughts on the need to upgrade clutch, and inherent problems driving in town traffic with that?
Loads complain about the 996, especially around the headlight area, me included.
I might live with the lights but the interior, black on black on black, black plastic. I'll take the 997 please, a huge step on in look and how it makes you feel.
Sorry 996
Regards,
A. Big Porsche Fan.
See, I don't think the 997tt was a big enough upgrade. I feel like in comparing the two, the 996tt feels classic and the 997tt feels very dated, like a weird blend of classic and 2000s technology. For example, the screen in the center console is just garbage compared to new tech, would look better without it. And most of the 996tt interior is leather, not plastic (at least, it was in my car).
I would have spent the money on the interior instead of the performance. It's gastly.
It’s nearly 20 years old. There’s nothing wrong with it at all. You don’t buy a car like this for it’s an interior either.
Dear Kuddles, have you actually driven a 996 turbo? I think if you had you wouldnt care an iota about the interior! Its functional and the seats are spectacularly comfortable. Lovely leather. After 20 yrs, they are virtually like new. Agree that there is a bit too much plastic, but its easy to keep clean with a wet cloth! All best.
@@pye007 The interior of a car matters to me. It's nice to have something that looks nice outside as well as inside but also have great performance.
@@Punisher9419 got ya. But please, if you havent test drive one. You'll forget all about the interior!
@@pye007 Not the same kind of car but my 03 XKR is more then enough for me. It's faster then I can handle and I don't really want to loose my license anytime soon. It's also got a fabulous interior.
Love the shirts Jay.... They help make the video's... Also like your presenting style. Keep up the great work/content.
